Name
The Foundation for Food Deserts (FFFD) helps eliminate food deserts in low-income
areas. Food deserts are local areas where residents have little to no continent options for fresh
and healthy food, such as fruits and vegetables (The Annien E. Casey Foundation, 2021). The
majority of food deserts are found in high-poverty areas. According to the USDA, 40% of the
United States population lives further than one mile from a food store, which is considered to be
a low-access area (Rhone, 2019). In Statesville, North Carolina, there is a particular need for
fresh food in the south side of town. Thus, the Foundation for Food Deserts has been established.
This type of nonprofit organization is a service based organization. The FFFD will
provide services to low-income family’s fresh food as well as partnering with the local
government to provide economic incentives for grocery stores to come to the area.
Purpose
The FFFD wants to see all low-income families living in food deserts to lead healthy
lives. The vision is to see low-income families to have a well-rounded diet by providing
education on what is a nutritious diet, how to cook nutritious foods, and provide additional fresh

Budget
Item Budget
Salaries $485,000
Fringe $65,000
Supplies $12,000
Equipment $7,000
Phone $3,500
Total $703,000
The FFFD plans to hire up to twelve staff members at the beginning of the foundation
with salary and benefits, such as 401k matching. The Fringe line includes all health insurance
and other benefits that the FFFD will provide the employees. Supplies are all office supplies,
such as desks, tables, and décor. The equipment will be computers, printers, and scanners. Each
employee will receive a computer, and each department will receive printers and scanners.
Utilities and Rent is the monthly rent for the office space as well as the internet for the facility.
The City of Statesville has donated the property. Therefore, we only have to pay $100 a month in
rent to go towards the outside maintenance of the property. Phone stipends for each employee are
included on the phone line. Travel and training will be distributed evenly among staff members.
The Executive Director and Economic Development Director will use this aspect of the budget to
form relationships with business and community leaders in order to bring grocery stores to the
area. The food line is the nutritious food needed for families. It could be groceries and kitchen
supplies for making the food. Program funds are used to enact the programs the FFFD will be
creating.
