WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING?

Biden-Harris Administration Invests nearly $34M to strengthen Wood Products Economy,
Forest Sector Jobs, Sustainable Forest Management
As part of its goal of investing in rural America, the Biden-Harris Administration is announcing that $33.7 million from President
Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will fund projects to strengthen the wood products economy and promote sustainable forest
management. This investment supports a crucial link between resilient, healthy forests and strong rural economies and jobs in the
forestry sector, especially in communities that depend on national forests and grasslands to grow and thrive.

“Healthy forests depend on a healthy forest products industry and as the nation faces an ongoing wildfire crisis, it is more important
than ever to invest in sustainable forest management across all lands,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “These investments
will reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, support existing jobs, and create new economic opportunities in Tribal and economically
disadvantaged communities.”

Forest restoration creates byproducts like small diameter timber and woody biomass, which has historically been of little market
value. Thanks in part to investments in innovative wood products from USDA Forest Service, this material which may have been
discarded, can be made into many types of wood products.

Today’s announcement provides $29 million to establish, reopen, or improve businesses that purchase and process these
byproducts from projects on federally managed or tribal lands at risk of wildfire, insects and disease. More than two thirds of the
funded businesses will use byproducts from forest restoration and hazardous fuels reduction on landscapes identified in the Forest
Service’s Wildfire Crisis Strategy.
These businesses are also vital employers in disadvantaged communities and tribal communities. Two thirds of all funded proposals
will be implemented in disadvantaged communities as identified by the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool. Funding will
also directly support tribal communities that are expanding manufacturing capacity.

In addition to supporting wood processing facilities, $4.7 million will fund temporary water crossing for skidders and other heavy
forestry equipment. These bridges protect streams, creeks and wetlands during forestry operations. The funding will assist in
implementing a rental or cost-share program that promotes the use of temporary water crossings across all lands.

Yet More Signs of Deterioration in European Pulp and Paper Industry

FreightWaves wrote last week about a large European pulp and paper company that issued a negative profit warning for the first time
in more than four years owing to deteriorating pulp demand in Europe and China and poor paperboard demand. Another week brings
another profit warning from a large European pulp and paper company, this time Finland-based Stora Enso.

Stora on Thursday substantially reduced its 2023 profit outlook from down 15-50% versus 2022 to down more than 50%, prompted
by intensifying market weakness toward the latter part of Q1. The company noted that the entire European packaging market is
deteriorating, particularly containerboard/boxes but also paperboard. In addition, the construction market is being adversely affected
by falling permits and new housing starts, and the global pulp market is worsening, as its peer Metsä Board indicated last week.

At the same time as demand and prices are falling, Stora is experiencing increasing cost pressure, particularly in terms of energy
wood and chemicals. In other words, the company is getting squeezed from all sides. In response, Stora has completed negotiations
on potential furloughs at its divisions’ product sites in Finland and is implementing other cost-reduction measures.

Lest readers think this market weakness is specific to Europe and China, it most certainly isn’t. All manner of economic indicators in
the U.S. are deteriorating (employment, retail sales, freight rates/volumes, etc.), including box demand. FreightWaves’ recent survey
of more than 30 box makers pointed to another substantial year-over-year demand decline in Q1, as was the case in Q4, with little to
no sequential improvement expected in April or thereafter.

Global paper and packaging companies — and many other companies besides — benefited enormously from the pandemic and
related unprecedented government stimulus spending (which drove a historic boom in goods demand). The reverse is happening
now, with no end in sight to the weakness.

Monadnock Paper Mills Launches New Un-plastic and Sustainable Boulevard™ and
Pavilion™ PC 100 Wide Format and Signage Media
Monadnock Paper Mills, Inc., the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States, demonstrates yet again that it’s
keeping up with the times by introducing our newest “Un-Plastic®” and sustainable wide format and signage materials.

“For Brands and retailers that are looking to fulfill their sustainability commitments without compromising durability, printability, and, of
course, great style – the search ends here with Monadnock and our two newest product lines” said Lisa Taylor, Vice President Sales
and Marketing. “We invested in developing Boulevard™ and Pavilion™ PC 100 without compromise, without plastic, and without a
doubt that these times demand new signs.”
May 2023 Page 6 of 43

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

· Boulevard is an uncompromising moisture-resistant durable poster paper that is suitable for both indoor and short-term outdoor
applications. The base paper and scratch-resistant print-receptive coating are engineered for durability and unparalleled performance
for demanding environments.

· Pavilion PC 100 is made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled waste fiber, satisfying the demand for more sustainable paper
choices. It’s the go-to paper stock for all indoor poster needs. It is bright white and has a matte coated surface that is engineered for
superior image reproduction. Even better, Pavilion is recyclable in the curbside mix paper waste bin.

Under a trio of pressures – the shifting regulatory landscape, consumer demand, and ESG corporate mandates, it’s paramount for
brands and retailers to drive sustainability throughout their operations: signage and in-store marketing are the next inevitable steps.

“Go Wide and Go Green…or Go Home,” says Taylor.

Boulevard and Pavilion PC 100, like all Monadnock printing, packaging, and display and wallgraphics, are FSC® (Forest Stewardship
Council®) certified (FSC C018866), manufactured carbon neutral, and made with 100% renewable Green-e certified wind-powered
electricity, all under a third-party certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

Creatives, agencies, in-store marketers, and interior designers serving the retail, hospitality, marketing, financial, healthcare,
education, corporate, and home décor industries are discovering that sustainability without compromise is possible with Monadnock.

UPM to Replace Natural Gas Boilers in Finland and Germany with Electric Units
UPM announced plans to replace the use of fossil fuels with electric boilers in heat and steam production at its mills in Finland and
Germany. A total of eight boilers will be installed, mainly to replace the use of natural gas.

"In addition to improved security of supply and emission reduction, electric boilers will significantly increase the mills' ability to provide
demand side flexibility to the electricity system and markets," said Petri Hyyryläinen, Energy Director at UPM Communication Papers.

With the introduction of the electric boilers, the company will take a step towards its 2030 target of reducing CO2 emissions from the
fuels and purchased electricity by 65%. In Finland, new electric boilers can reduce CO2 emissions from the use of fossil fuels by
about 50,000 metric tons per year. In Germany, electric boilers will improve security of supply for heat and steam generation and
achieve even greater emission reductions.
UPM Tervasaari paper mill has already commissioned its first 50 MW electric boiler, which was transferred to Valkeakoski from UPM
Kaipola mill. In the autumn, a new, more efficient 60 MW electric boiler will be installed at the mill. The new boiler will not only
produce steam and heat for the mill, but also heat for the Valkeakoski district heating network.

The remaining electric boilers will be installed at the Finnish and German mills by the end of 2023. Once operational, they will replace
a significant amount of various fossil fuels, thereby reducing emissions at the mills and at UPM.

Billerud Temporarily Idles Escanaba, Michigan, Mill Following Fungal Infection Outbreak
Billerud announced the temporary idling of the Escanaba Mill for up to three weeks as a precautionary measure to protect the health
and safety of its employees and contractors due to a blastomycosis fungal infection outbreak.

"Our top priority now and always is protecting the health and safety of our employees and contractors who work at our Escanaba
Mill," says Christoph Michalski, Billerud President and CEO. "We care deeply about their well-being and are doing everything we can
to protect them and identify and address the root cause of the blastomycosis fungal infections. As a precautionary measure, we will
temporarily idle the Escanaba Mill for up to three weeks to facilitate additional proper cleaning based on recommendations from
NIOSH and other organizations, which requires larger portions of the mill to be vacant while this work is performed. The financial
impact is assessed to be limited since the production at the Escanaba Mill was being adjusted to meet current market demand."

Billerud first learned of the blastomycosis fungal infections on March 3rd from the Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties
(PHDM), the local health department in Escanaba, Michigan, after PHDC was notified by the local hospital of several atypical
pneumonia infections in individuals who work at the Escanaba Mill. Initial testing of individuals confirmed some of these infections are
caused by a fungal infection called blastomycosis. To date, there have been 21 confirmed cases and 76 probable cases of
blastomycosis among Escanaba Mill workers.

Billerud's leadership, occupational health and safety department, union leadership and mill employees have been proactively working
with the PHDM, an industrial hygienist, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate the outbreak.
May 2023 Page 7 of 43

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

"Although the source of the infection has not been established, and we have not received any information from the mill's
investigation, public health officials, or any of the organizations assisting in this investigation, that indicates visiting or working at the
mill is unsafe, we take this matter very seriously," said Kevin Kuznicki, Billerud President North America.

"We are following recommendations from experts at these organizations, including deep cleaning in high traffic areas throughout the
mill; inspecting ventilation systems and replacing filters, and testing various raw materials coming into the mill; conducting an onsite
Health Hazard Evaluation to study the health and safety of Escanaba employees with the assistance of NIOSH, CDC, MDHHS and
PHDM; communicating regularly with employees, contractors and visitors, encouraging them to wear NIOSH and OSHA-
recommended N95 masks and recommending they contact their local healthcare providers if they are experiencing any symptoms.
The temporary idling of the mill to perform additional cleaning is another proactive step we are taking," Kuznicki said.

According to the PHDM, the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan is a known risk area for blastomycosis infection. Identifying the source
can be difficult because the blastomyces fungus is endemic to the area and there has never been an industrial outbreak of this nature
documented anywhere in the U.S.

Blastomycosis is a disease associated with a fungus that grows in moist soil and decomposing matter such as wood and leaves that
can become airborne if disturbed. These infections are rare and most people who breathe in blastomyces will not get sick. According
to the CDC, blastomycosis is not contagious and doesn't spread from person to person or between animals and people.
Blastomycosis can be treated with antifungal medications prescribed by a medical provider.

Georgia-Pacific Plans $91 Million Upgrade at Monticello Mill in Mississippi

Construction is scheduled to begin soon on a $91 million upgrade at Georgia-Pacific’s containerboard mill in Monticello. It’s one of
the company’s largest investments in the Lawrence County facility.

The project consists of replacing the log line, which includes scales, cranes, a rechipper, unbinding racks and other critical equipment
needed to safely unload trucks and prepare logs and chips for processing into pulp.

“This project will create long-term value and improve our capabilities as we work to become the best manufacturer in the industry,”
said Drexel Lambert, vice president for Georgia-Pacific containerboard operations.

The new log line will reduce truck unloading times, improve truck traffic flow, allow for longer logs and improve wood yield. It will also
improve the facility’s competitive position in the industry and will strengthen the mill’s relationships with wood suppliers.

“This investment reinforces Georgia-Pacific’s commitment to Monticello, Lawrence County and the surrounding area,” Jeff Joyce, vice
president for the Monticello mill, said. “It will position us for continued success in the future.”

A New Way to Analyze Biomass - Swedish MANTEX Exhibits at TAPPICon

In April, the Swedish greentech company Mantex AB visits the USA to market the company's product Biomass Analyzer. Mantex has
developed the Biomass Analyzer, an analysis equipment that, through revolutionary X-ray based technology, determines the
accurate moisture content of biomass such as wood chips in less than 2 minutes. The Biomass Analyzer is incredibly easy to operate
and easy to integrate with existing ERP systems making it easy to keep track of mass quality.
May 2023 Page 8 of 43

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

Easy, quick and accurate measurements in less than 2 minutes:
· Replace conventional ovens for a quicker and more accurate measurement.
· Measure the moisture content of the mass for valuation and shipment verification.
· Use the data from the moisture content measurements for improved mixing.
The Biomass Analyzer was originally developed to be able to measure central properties of biomass in the bioenergy industry, but its
ability to accurately determine the moisture content of wood has made it interesting for pulp and paper mills as well.

- The American pulp and paper mills and pellet manufacturers handle enormous volumes of wood chips and today use the same
manual and slow methods as the bioenergy industry to determine moisture content, including 24-hour oven drying, says Max Gerger,
CEO of Mantex AB.

Mantex will be promoting the Biomass Analyzer at the pulp and paper trade show TAPPICon, in Atlanta on April 22-26. In connection
with the fair, Mantex will visit potential customers in the industry to show the opportunities for efficiency gains that the Biomass
Analyzer can offer the industry.

Mantex has also developed the analysis equipment FlowScanner, which today is manufactured and distributed via Andritz
Technologies, a joint venture between Mantex and Andritz. After very successful field tests in a North American pulp mill, Andritz
Technologies has sold several FlowScanners for use in North America as well as Asia and South America.

World's Most Northerly Paper Mill Makes Sustainable Choices with ABB
Why buy something new when you can renovate and upgrade? These are values packaging giant Billerud in Karlsborg, northern
Sweden, lives by. So a retrofit solution with new energy-efficient circuit breakers was a perfect match when its decades-old
switchgear needed new life.

In a slow-growing forest in northern Sweden is a unique raw material: trees that produce extremely strong paper. Every day, 130 log
trucks transport them to the nearby Billerud plant in Karlsborg, the world’s most northerly paper mill, where they are transformed into
moldable paper (FibreForm®), kraft paper, sack paper and bleached pulp in baled form ‒ 350,000 tons of it every year.

This impressive level of production is enabled in part by reliable technology, which is regularly tested and upgraded, and in part by a
dedicated workforce of 440 employees. "There is a lot of expertise in the area and many people who work here have been doing it for
a long time. You can work here all your life, but on different things. We know that many people who apply to us do so to work with
sustainability and contribute to a sustainable society," says Mikael Nordqvist, plant manager at Billerud Karlsborg.

Located just outside of Kalix, the mill is the largest private employer in the municipality. In addition to its main production plant, it
houses two application laboratories with expertise in pulp optimization and bag and sack packaging development. The manufacturing
process is a circular system where chemicals are recycled, and the company is 75-78% self-sufficient in electricity, perfectly
positioning the operation to respond to the growing demand for more sustainable, plastic-free packaging products.

Avoiding unplanned shutdowns

ABB and Billerud have been working together for many years to ensure production in Karlsborg runs round the clock, as any
unplanned stoppage can have a catastrophic effect on production and revenue, not to mention the safety of employees. That's why
Billerud tests its switchgear every three years and carries out scheduled maintenance and upgrades every seven weeks at different
parts of the production chain.
With many components provided by ABB, including low and medium voltage switchgear, UPS, motors, drives and 800xA control
systems, ABB service teams are an important part of this process.

"ABB's products work well for us and what we appreciate most of all is the local service we receive. The fact that they are close to us
when we need both products and their expertise is invaluable," says Henrik Jakobsson, Electrical & Automation Technician at
Billerud.

Time to upgrade
Every so often, however, a larger upgrade project is required to ensure the long-term reliability of the plant’s switchgear, which has
been in service since the 1980s. In the second half of 2022 this involved two ABB service engineers coming in on two occasions to
replace incoming circuit breakers in seven selected low voltage switchgear throughout the plant. Ten medium voltage circuit breakers
were also replaced.
"Billerud chose a site-built solution, which is the most extensive renovation you can do without replacing the entire switchgear. It is
very cost-effective and also a sustainable option that allows switchgear from the 1980s to have a new life and live on," says Patrik
Granlund, Sales Manager at ABB Electrification.

Six breakers were replaced with new Emax2 breakers during a stop after the summer of 2022 and the seventh in November of the
same year. Replacing the old ALG and ALH variants in the switchgear improved the safety of the equipment and immediately
increased the availability of spare parts.
May 2023 Page 9 of 43

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

Emax2 is also the only breaker of its kind that can both protect electrical circuits and reduce energy consumption based on user
needs.
“Replacing a breaker in this comprehensive way takes about 7-8 hours, but compared to replacing an entire switchgear, the loss of
production and downtime is significantly less,” Granlund explains.

From a sustainability standpoint, only a few parts needed to be scrapped in an otherwise intact plant, with the new breakers now
likely to last for several decades. "The pay-off time for changing the breakers can be anything from 0 to 100 years but knowing that
we have done what we could to secure the operation of the electricity and personal safety feels good," says Henrik Jakobsson,
Electrical & Automation Technician at Billerud.

Continuous development and technological leadership are essential for economic, social and environmental sustainability. Investing
in regular maintenance, upgrades and occasional larger retrofits is just one example of how Billerud is living these values.

ABB Invests Nearly $100 Million in New Berlin Greenfield Campus

ABB, a global leader in technology innovation, is celebrating the “floor pour” of its newest U.S. flagship campus at 18250 W. Lincoln
Avenue. The greenfield location in New Berlin will serve as the U.S. headquarters, manufacturing facility and distribution center for
the Drives and Motion Services businesses. The new facility is anticipated to open in late 2024 and will accommodate 720 ABB
employees.

Approximately $100 million is being invested in the project and is expected to create 100 new jobs over the next three years.

“The U.S. is a significant and crucial market for our drives and the services that support them,” said Tuomo Hoysniemi, President of
ABB’s US Motion Business Area and Global Drives Products Division. “We are committed to local engineering, product design, and
manufacturing as well as increased capacity and innovative production and warehousing processes. Our new campus will help us
better serve our local customers by increasing the availability of market-specific solutions and decreasing the time it takes to serve
our customers.”

The business manufactures a wide range of AC variable frequency drives and controls that reduce energy consumption in buildings
and industrial applications in the U.S. market. Currently, the business is divided between two smaller, separate campuses in New
Berlin and Wauwatosa. The new campus will include 220,000 square feet of manufacturing space and support offices in addition to a
connected 315,000-square-foot distribution center. The consolidation of all operations to one campus will add additional efficiencies
and reduce overall time to deliver.

“While we make products that help our customers improve their energy efficiency, we are pleased to incorporate features into our
campus that will help us reduce our own carbon footprint,” said Kelly Kling, Site Leader and Vice President of Finance for the U.S.
ABB Drives and Motion Services businesses. “Geothermal heat pumps and modern HVAC systems will allow us to recycle wasted
heat and reduce our energy usage by more than 45%. Improved insulation, rooftop solar panels and ABB advanced building controls
will also ensure that our campus operates efficiently and sustainably over the long term.”

ANDRITZ Flue Gas Treatment System to Further Reduce Emissions at Billerud Plant in
Sweden
International technology Group ANDRITZ received an order from Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer Billerud AB to supply a flue
gas treatment system for its Gruvön mill. The system will allow the mill to increase the output of its soda recovery boiler while at the
same time reducing emissions. The recovered soda is reused in the pulp manufacturing process.

ANDRITZ will supply an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) including its proven switched integrated rectifier technology (SIR) for
maximum operational efficiency. ANDRITZ has won more than 20 ESP lines since integrating this product into its portfolio in 2021.

The new precipitator will be installed in addition to the two existing ESPs, allowing Gruvön mill to increase the capacity of its soda
recovery boiler by over 30% while keeping particulate matter emissions well below 15 mg/Nm3. The ANDRITZ ESP solution will
enable the mill to continue its profitable operations while complying with the strict local environmental regulations.

ANDRITZ’s scope also comprises all auxiliaries for ESP connection as well as mechanical erection, insulation, supervision of

PM3's production is based 100% on recycled fiber and will use steam from the new waste-to-energy plant, which opened in April
2022.

"We are excited to enter a new market. This represents a new era for Norske Skog and is a major step to become a leading
independent European producer of high-quality, renewable, and environmentally produced containerboard," said Sven Ombudstvedt,
CEO of Norske Skog. "The new products illustrate the inherent potential of our industrial sites and will strengthen Norske Skog's
asset base and cash flow generation for decades ahead."

Norske Skog Bruck will start to deliver containerboard to customers in the second quarter, the company said.

Full production utilization of 95% is expected in the second half of 2025, Norske Skog added.

The Bruck conversion project primarily involved the rebuild/conversion of PM3 (including a new winder, electrical, automation and
auxiliary systems); a new OCC plant for 100% of the pulp needed for the production of containerboard; and mill site integration and
civil works.

Resolute's New Cellulose Filaments Plant in Quebec Nearing Completion

Resolute Forest Products said that its new cellulose filaments plant at its Kenogami (Saguenay, Quebec) paper mill is nearing
completion. Working closely with key partners Performance BioFilaments and FPInnovations, and through the continued support of
the ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts du Québec Wood Innovation Program, Resolute is working to commercialize a
translucent film made of cellulose filaments (CF).

According to Resolute, this product could potentially replace clear plastic films used in a number of everyday applications, notably in
store packaging of fresh foods. For example, the plastic window on a typical premium bread bag can be replaced with the new CF-
based film, representing a 100% biosourced package that can be easily disposed of through a single-stream recycling collection
system or a typical municipal composting infrastructure. This product offers a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics in a range
of applications.

"Bio-based translucent film is another example of what our cellulose filament product platform can lead to," said Alain Bourdages,
Vice President, Innovation and Energy at Resolute. "Improving the sustainability profile of packaging products is an exciting
challenge, and we believe that we can be part of the solution. This development shows that wood-based products have a clear
future."

For an industry that typically produces opaque printing paper, the development of a see-through product was no small challenge.
With the help of Innofibre and support of FPInnovations, Resolute successfully produced pilot quantities of CF film. Rolls produced
during multiple trials have been successfully used in converting on commercial bag lines with potential customers. Resolute and
Performance BioFilaments are now working with manufacturers of these novel films.

EU Associations Launch Coalition for a More Competitive, and Ambitious, EU Bioeconomy

A new group of 14 EU trade associations including the providers of high-quality wood-based products, fibre-based paper and board
products and packaging, and renewable energy solutions, supported by EU forest owners and managers, has launched a cross-
sectoral coalition. The coalition’s aim is to present EU policymakers with an ambitious common vision ahead of 2030 and, going
beyond, one leading to a transition towards a circular bioeconomy.

The coalition has made publicly available a paper detailing common challenges, needs, and solutions. It is also supported by a
further 6 associations linked to the forestry sector.
May 2023 Page 11 of 43

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

This is the broadest coalition yet representing these value chains. Jointly, its members represent 3% of the EU’s GDP, €520 billion in
turnover, and 20% of its manufacturing companies. They are an integrated part of the EU bioeconomy, using local renewably-
sourced materials, made and recycled in Europe, and using European technology. But their contribution could go much further. They
hope to work with the EU institutions towards creating an enabling policy environment for their sectors to collectively reach climate
change mitigation equivalent to 30% of EU annual CO2 emissions. In 2019, this figure stood at 20%.

The coalition’s ambition will require consolidating the EU’s global leadership as a provider of sustainable and competitive alternative
solutions for today, and innovative opportunities for tomorrow. Europe’s wood and fibre-based value chains are widely considered a
laboratory for the future circular bioeconomy.

In order to be climate neutral by 2050, the EU needs to work with the coalition to accelerate the uptake of bio-products, encourage
investments in green technologies for production processes and supply chains, and support a shift towards sustainable consumption
while putting in place policies to boost the competitiveness of sustainable manufacturing industries.

The competitiveness of the overall European industry has been impacted by the energy crunch and issues related to the supply of
strategic raw materials. Wood-based products, fibre-based paper and board products and packaging, and renewable energy
solutions, offer resilience and ensure European strategic autonomy and competitiveness via the sustainable management of sources
of valuable raw materials, and secondary raw materials and related technology.

Smurfit Kappa Delivers Over 40% Reduction in CO2 Emissions

Smurfit Kappa remains on target to deliver on its long-term goal to have at least net zero emissions by 2050, according to its 16th
annual Sustainable Development Report. The comprehensive report, which covers January to December 2022, highlights the
company’s progress through continued capital investment, ongoing operational improvement and collaboration with customers and
other key stakeholders.

Last year, Smurfit Kappa delivered several landmark achievements highlighting its continued leadership in sustainability including:
• A world first in successfully trialling hydrogen in its Saillat paper mill in France.
• Completion of a multi-fuel boiler in the Zülpich paper mill in Germany which reduced emissions at the mill by 25%
• The announcement of the Group’s largest decarbonisation project in Cali, Colombia involving an investment of almost €100 million.
• Commencement of a district heating project in Austria to benefit 20,000 homes across 3 communities.

Commenting on the release of the report, Tony Smurfit, Group CEO, said: “I am pleased that we have continued to deliver on our
sustainability strategy not just because of what we achieved in 2022 but because of our planning and actions which extend beyond
the short term. Smurfit Kappa’s purpose to create, protect and care continues to drive the changes needed to nurture a greener and
bluer planet.

“Some of the significant sustainability achievements detailed in our latest SDR have included collaborative projects with participants
from across our value-chain, a truly open and progressive approach to solving the major challenges facing society.”

The report also shows the measurable progress that Smurfit Kappa has delivered during 2022 against all its Better Planet 2050
sustainability targets including: 43.9% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2005 and 4% in 2022 alone; reduction in water consumption
by 2.1% in 2022; waste to landfill intensity decreased by 24% since 2013; packaging solutions sold as Chain of Custody, certified at

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

In the past six months, there has been additional recognition of the company’s sustainability credentials. Smurfit Kappa received two
‘Top Rated’ badges from Morningstar Sustainalytics, for both ‘regional’ and ‘industry’ out-performance. These improved ratings build
on the improved CDP (a global disclosure system for investors) climate rating of A- achieved in 2022 and the category-leading MSCI
AA rating.

Garrett Quinn, Chief Sustainability Officer at Smurfit Kappa, added: “The value and importance of transparency in reporting on
sustainability continues to grow. Earlier this month, Smurfit Kappa issued a report together with the Financial Times that found, whilst
the corporate world has a lot of ambition and commitments, open, assured reporting and delivery is often lacking. For sixteen years,
Smurfit Kappa has produced a comprehensive sustainability development report that has been third party assured since 2009. In a
world increasingly concerned with greenwashing we hope this history of public, assured reporting, coupled with our continued
delivery each year, gives all our stakeholders confidence in the Group’s sustainability strategy and delivery against its commitments.”

Georgia-Pacific Contributes $100,000 for Auburn University to Help Advance Papermaking

and Research
Out with the old, in with the new! Georgia-Pacific has contributed $100,000 to Auburn University to help fund a new state-of-the-art
digester which will give engineering students the ability to test and improve a newly patented innovation in papermaking.

The current digester in the Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering (AC-PABE) at AU is over 30 years old with many
operational issues and no longer meets the needs of teaching and research. That's why the AC-PABE reached out to Georgia-
Pacific, a long-time partner of AU and the pulp and paper program.

"We have developed a new additive for the kraft pulping process and have been granted a US patent for this technology," said Dr.
Zhihua Jiang, Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation associate professor and director, AC-PABE. "The new digester will allow us to
systematically evaluate the effect of the new additive under various operating conditions and optimize and make the technology
ready for a commercial scale trial. It will also be used in our other research projects to further improve the pulping efficiency."

A digester is a key piece of equipment used in the paper-making process. Pulp mill digesters use heat and chemicals to break down
wood chips into pulp. The pulp is then further refined and processed to produce paper products.

Johnnie Pearson, director of pulp power and recovery center of excellence for Georgia-Pacific, graduated from AU with a bachelor's
degree in chemical engineering and knows how important this donation is to the school, students and future generations of Georgia-
Pacific.
"I still use all my experiences from Auburn every day. It's the fundamental basis of how I came into the industry and evolved," said
Pearson. "I worked on the old digester when I was in school, and the new equipment will have a dramatic impact on the students and
advance their cooking techniques. To this day, I still go back to my hands-on experiences."

Once the new digester is installed sometime in 2023, students will be able to operate the digester, produce pulp from wood chips and
evaluate the effect of reaction conditions on yield and pulp properties. In addition, the digester will allow students, for the first time to
effectively study and learn the kinetics of the pulping process by evaluating the changes in liquor compositions.

"Georgia-Pacific values our commitment to our community partners like Auburn University," said Hudson Pope, senior vice president
of Georgia-Pacific operations and president of the Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation. "AU is rooted in outstanding instruction and
meaningful research. The educational experience that donations like this can provide for students is invaluable and critical to their
success after graduation, something Georgia-Pacific is proud to be a part of."

While the digester used in the AC-PABE is on a much smaller scale than what's used in a Georgia-Pacific mill it's an integral part of
the hands-on education for students at Auburn.

"I think anybody within this pulp and paper program will benefit," said Bradley Lowery, an AU chemical engineering student. "The new
digester will be state of the art. The hands-on learning capability goes much further than what you can get from a textbook."

Bradley will graduate in May 2023 and take his education and experience to Georgia-Pacific's Alabama River Cellulose mill, where
he'll be doing mechanical reliability.

"My father has worked for Georgia-Pacific for the last 15 or so years. So, I've learned a lot about how they do business," said
Bradley. "Once I came to Auburn, I was fortunate enough to be on the pulp and paper scholarship, which I am very grateful for.
Georgia-Pacific has put many meals on my family's table and has really brought things full circle for me. The learning I gained at
Auburn and now going to work for Georgia-Pacific after graduation: it's really been such a blessing in my life. I can't thank Georgia-
Pacific enough."

SCA Ramping Up New Kraftliner Machine at Obbola Mill in Sweden
SCA announced that the new kraftliner machine at its Obbola pulp and paper mill in Umeå, Sweden, is ramping up production. At full
capacity, which is expected in a few years, the machine will produce 725,000 tons per year of high-quality kraftliner in a range of
basis weights between 100 and 200 gsm.

The new machine, PM 2, will replace the mill's existing kraftliner machine, PM 1, which currently has the capacity to produce 450,000
tpy of kraftliner.

"When we are at full capacity, the capacity increases from 450,000 tons to 725,000 tons on an annual basis, so our renewable
kraftliner will be able to replace a lot of plastic and at the same time strengthen our facility's competitiveness on the global market,"
said Mill Manager, Gustaf Nygren.

The project had a total budget of SEK 7.5 billion, of which approximately SEK 1 billion was allocated to environmental improvements
at the mill site. Among other things, a biofuel-fired mesa furnace with the potential to phase out fossil fuels and save 20,000 tons of
carbon dioxide emissions has been installed at the mill.
The new kraftliner machine was supplied by Voith.

"It is an impressive machine and a unique project that, despite the chaotic situation around the world, with pandemic, war and
inflation, was able to be completed faster than planned," Nygren said. "It's a nice receipt for the project organization and all the staff
involved."

To reach full capacity, PM 2 requires a new return fiber line, which will be installed in the old machine room and be ready by the
summer.

"We then expect a period of adjustment and ramp-up with the goal of reaching full capacity in 2026," Nygren explained. "Obbola will
then be a very efficient and competitive facility with a product that has the market's lowest carbon footprint and will be of utmost
importance for the transition from oil-based packaging material."

Alongside the upgrade of the machine, other areas around the mill have also been upgraded with new office spaces and new
skywalks that increase the safety of employees.

All in all, around 100 electric car chargers have been installed at the industry and a total of 1,610 cubic meters of wood have been
used as building material in the project.

"The machine is the heart of the business and it is the business of creating renewable material that also drives the great climate
benefit, but we have also tried to get the forest industry's sustainable raw material to permeate the entire project and I think we have
succeeded very well in that," Nygren said.

Ahlstrom Begins Consultation Process About Future of Stenay Paper Mill in France
Ahlstrom has launched a consultation process with employee representatives at its Stenay paper mill in France about the possibility
to divest the mill, and if a buyer cannot be found considering closure.
May 2023 Page 16 of 43

WHO’S DOIN’ ANYTHING? (CONTINUED)

Stenay mill produces one-side coated specialty papers for specific uses in the packaging sector where there is overcapacity in
Europe and competition with machines with a more competitive cost structure. The mill has an annual capacity of approximately
55,000 tons of specialty paper and has 127 employees.

Despite thorough review of different options and attempts to develop potential new products, Ahlstrom has not been able to find
solutions that would enable the Group to continue operating the Stenay mill. Therefore, after having carefully studied all possible
scenarios, Ahlstrom is now planning to divest the site and if a buyer cannot be found considering closure.

"We understand that this is a difficult time for our employees at Stenay, and we will do our utmost to evaluate all viable alternatives
for the site to mitigate possible unfavorable social impacts," said Mark Ushpol, EVP, Food and Consumer Packaging division.
"Should we be unable to find a solution, we would work closely together with other Ahlstrom locations, the city of Stenay, the Meuse
locality and other stakeholders to support all potentially affected employees."

Committed To Canadian Communities

It is well known that Jackson Wijaya, the ultimate and sole owner of Paper Excellence, is the son of the current head of APP.

In the early days, Jackson benefited from some experience gained from the family business early in his life, as well as support getting
his company started. This is hardly a unique or exceptional circumstance.
The situation is entirely different today. Jackson operates his Paper Excellence independently. Many stakeholders and regulators –
global funding institutions, regulatory bodies and certifiers, among others – have acknowledged this reality. Paper Excellence’s
acquisition of Resolute was extensively reviewed under the Investment Canada Act.
As we have expanded our business, we have looked for companies and markets steeped in long traditions and with best practices to
share in these areas.

Our recent acquisitions of Domtar and Resolute were spurred certainly by undervalued businesses that we believe with meaningful
investment can be improved and modernized, but equally by the rich experience and expertise of the leadership, and deep
understanding of the norms and values of the markets in which they operate.

The leaders and workers of Domtar and Resolute have set the highest standards for sustainable forestry the businesses they
operate, both in business practices and environmental standards, and we both sought that out and uphold those standards. Working
with our teams in each of the businesses, we have investment plans that support local communities, create and maintain good jobs,
and do so in an environmentally sustainable way.

Paper Excellence is committed to conducting business in a manner that protects the environment, conserves resources, minimizes its
environmental footprint and ensures sustainable development. We strictly comply with government regulations everywhere we
operate in Canada, in the U.S. and in Europe.

We want to be crystal clear:

• We have no outstanding loans from any Chinese institution, nor any other financial ties to China.
• Paper Excellence is separate and entirely independent from Asia Pulp and Paper, which is controlled by other members of the
Wijaya family.
• There is no involvement of any other Wijaya family member in Paper Excellence or Fibre Excellence.
• Paper Excellence and Fibre Excellence strictly comply with environmental regulations. Thanks to ongoing investments, the
environmental performance of operations continues to improve.
None of the reports published in recent days have brought that into question.

Toscotec’s TT Headbox-SL starts up on BiOrigin Specialty Product’s MG Machine in USA

BiOrigin Specialty Products started up PM2 at its Menominee site in Michigan after the successful completion of a wet section rebuild
supplied by Toscotec on a turnkey basis. PM2 is a MG (Machine Glazed) machine producing specialty papers including MG grades
and flexible packaging products.

A fully customized design

The project started with an onsite survey by Toscotec’s technical team who identified the primary targets of the new design, in
particular moisture profile and CD bone dry profile. BiOrigin Specialty Products (or ‘BSP’) selected Toscotec’s design solution,
valuing the importance of a fully customized technical offer based on the analysis of the machine’s operating data.

Target achieved
The rebuild achieved its targets of remarkable enhancement of cross direction (CD) profiles of the paper sheet. In particular, the new
TT Headbox-SL’s dilution control allowed to improve the bonedry profile; an optimized jet distribution and jet landing led to the
improvement of the moisture and basis weight (BW) profiles.

The installation of dewatering elements with angle and height adjustable blades in the Fourdrinier section increased wire dewatering.

As a result, the rebuild improved the machine runnability, delivered definite potential for future production increase and improved
sheet formation on all produced grades both in absolute terms and across the machine width.

optimal profile control, and an upgrade of the Fourdrinier section. The turnkey supply of the rebuild included a complete service
package with erection, erection supervision, commissioning, and start-up assistance.

Steve Michalko, BSP’s Vice President Technical Service, says, “The entire project went smoothly from inception to successful
completion without any significant concerns. The start-up curve was literally hours, and we continue to see intended and
unanticipated improvements. The solutions provided by Toscotec have eliminated previous operational constraints and positioned
BiOrigin Specialty Products to improve both capability and productivity moving forward.”

Luca Ghelli, R&D Director at Toscotec, says, “Since the beginning of this project, BiOrigin Specialty Products and Toscotec’s teams
have been working in sync toward a common goal with a strong feeling of reciprocal respect. This kind of approach is in itself a recipe
for success. The very positive outcome of the rebuild is of course the icing on the cake.”

Bracell Adopts the Use of a 100% Electric Truck for Pulp Transport
Brazilian pulp producer Bracell has started the year with an innovative project — the use of an electric truck to transport pulp.

According to Bracell, the initiative is unprecedented in this type of operation with heavy vehicles (trucks weighing more than 40 tons)
and it is estimated that the company will avoid the emission of 132,000 kg of CO2eq per year from a single truck. In this way, the
company reinforces its commitment to sustainable development in all its operations, processes and activities and expands its actions
aimed at sustainability also to the logistical stage of the production chain, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and the
fight against changes in weather.

The electric truck will transport pulp on the stretch between the plant, located in Lençóis Paulista (Central West region of the state of
São Paulo) and the Intermodal Terminal in Pederneiras (São Paulo), using the Juliano Lorenzetti (LEP-060), Osni Mateus (SP-261)
highways up to the access road municipality, in Pederneiras.

In the pilot project, the Bracell hopes to understand the performance of the electric motor in uphill stretches with load, time and
necessary amounts of charging and maintenance, in addition to economic and environmental gains.

Alberto Pagano, head of Supply Chain at Bracell, pointed out that another differential of the vehicle will be the use of renewable
energy, produced by the company itself, to recharge the truck’s batteries.
“It is a pilot project that reiterates the company’s commitment to the sustainability of the business.” Pagano said. The use of the
vehicle brings benefits for the climate and also for the entire community.”

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE BY Ronaldo Ribeiro,

South America has reaffirmed itself as the largest pulp
production hub, without a doubt that the new ESG rules
are contributing enormously to the sector's
sustainability. The great movement of pulp companies
in the search for environmental, social and governance
excellence is perceived. Another important perception is that innovations are
leveraging the sector and new factories are emerging with ultra-modern
technologies, these initiatives make the sector increasingly competitive. We hope
that new wood products can be developed and adopted by the market.

Klabin is featured in the Fastmarkets RISI PPI Awards

Source: SP Topic

Klabin was the winner in two categories of the PPI Awards, from Fastmarkets RISI, considered a relevant recognition in
the Pulp and Paper sector. Cristiano Teixeira, the company's managing director, was elected International CEO of the
Year, and the company's actions aimed at the digital transformation of its forestry operations were recognized in the
Digital Innovation category.

“It is an honor to be once again recognized by Fastmarkets RISI for my role at the head of Klabin, a Brazilian company
with over 120 years of history, which has been reinventing itself throughout its trajectory. We are more than a forest-based
company that produces pulp, paper and paper packaging, we provide different solutions for more than 80 countries, such
as fluff, paper packaging for liquids (LPB), industrial bags, corrugated boxes and other types of paper and paper
packaging. I share this achievement with Klabin's more than 17,000 direct employees”, highlighted Cristiano Teixeira,
during the event.

Klabin was also recognized for the implementation of digital methodologies in its operations in the field, which makes its
forests even more productive and, consequently, more competitive, while preserving natural resources and the
environment.

Aware of the movement towards transforming agribusiness through new technologies, the company stood out by
presenting a set of five innovations adopted in its processes: the forest machine simulator; the company's forestry
planning tool; the monitoring of anthills through the use of radars embedded in drones; the forestry control tower and the
Harbunk, an unprecedented forestry harvesting machine in Brazil, which collaborates to increase productivity and offer
more operational safety in the forestry harvesting process.

This is not the first time that Klabin has been recognized by the PPI Awards. In 2021, Cristiano Teixeira was elected
International CEO of the Year, and Gabriella Michelucci, director of Corrugated Cardboard at the company, was the
winner in the Industry Woman of the Year category. In 2020, Klabin was the winner in the Innovation in Packaging
category with Eukaliner®, a kraftliner made 100% with eucalyptus fiber and unprecedented worldwide.

Bracell develops practices for better water use

Source: Magazine O Papel Online

In the month in which World Water Day is celebrated, on March 22nd, Bracell reiterates its commitment to sustainability
and has been investing more and more in innovative models in its operations. The company that has the greenest and
most modern pulp mill in the world uses a sustainable process for the conscious use of water. The result: around 90% of
the water captured from Tietê, located 22 km from the municipality of Lençóis Paulista (SP), returns to the river after the
industrial process as treated effluent.

The data is the result of periodic collections made by a company attested by official State bodies together with the
company's Industrial Environment team.

After use in the manufacturing process, the water passes through the effluent treatment system, which is highly efficient in
removing organic and inorganic load, before returning to the river. The effluent treatment applied at Bracell is carried out
in three phases and gave the company the title of pioneer in the pulp sector in the state of São Paulo to adopt this
measure. The first phase removes inorganic compounds, the second treats the organic matter and the third phase does
the final polishing in the effluent.

pulp production process. Then, after use, the water returns to the company's treatment station, where its efficiency has
the ability to reduce the effluent load by about six times before returning it to the river. As a result, the effluent reaches
Tietê with better quality than the water we capture to use in the industry process", explains Cleber Augusto de Souza,
Production Process and Utilities specialist at Bracell SP.

According to him, the greater the organic load of the water, the greater the time the water body has to purify it. "When we
return water with better quality, the company contributes to the entire ecosystem and society in general", he argues.

The amount of water captured and returned is regulated by licensed bodies, with frequent reports. According to Cleber,
with the investments in technology made during the project, this enables a reduction in water intake far below what the
federal grant allows, avoiding harming the source and riverside communities.

Bracell performs periodic analyzes on the quality of the water resource, where all reports are extremely auditable. In
addition to the Tietê River, Bracell regularly monitors the site's groundwater quality.

More than celebrating the date, Bracell adopts continuous actions to improve its processes respecting the environment
and water resources. Another example that the company can cite is about the rainwater capture system and the reuse of
this water by the industry.

"All of the rainwater is drained into the rainwater ponds, being reused in the manufacturing process. As a result, we
capture even less water from the Tietê River, reiterating the company's practices in the environmental issue and showing
that it is possible to have a sustainable business" , says Murilo Sanches, Utilities manager at Bracell SP.

“Our philosophy is that it is only good for Bracell if it is good for the community, for the country, for the climate and for our
customers, and only then is it good for the company. The Tietê river passes through more than 62 cities in São Paulo,
being one of the main ones in the state. And here in the region, in addition to contributing to the fauna and flora, it is also
important for tourism. Therefore, we invest in technology combined with the sustainability of our business, generating
positive impacts for our society”, reinforces Sanches.

Solenis receives Platinum rating from EcoVadis

Source: tissue online

For the second consecutive year, Solenis has earned Platinum-level recognition for Corporate Social Responsibility
performance from EcoVadis, a collaborative platform that provides sustainability ratings and performance improvement
tools for global supply chains.

“We are very proud that our global commitment to sustainability has again resulted in prestigious Platinum status. Once
you reach that level, it becomes more difficult to maintain, with additional questions to be answered and criteria to be met.
All companies are striving to improve year after year, so it gets harder and harder to be part of the 1%,” said Dr. Daniel
Grell, Director of Safety, Regulatory and Quality at Solenis.

“This is a reflection of the work of 6,500 people in 120 countries and their devotion to our internal emphasis on people,
performance and results. We look forward to continually improving and making this announcement again next year.”

For John Panichella, CEO of the company, the renewed recognition “is especially notable as the company has continued
to grow and integrate new operations”.

“Meeting and exceeding our sustainability goals and helping our customers do so is a daily priority, as is safety. It's a day
one responsibility for everyone who joins our company, and we're proud of it."

Solenis, a global leader in the production of specialty chemicals for water-intensive industries, remains among the top 1%
performers evaluated by EcoVadis in the chemical industry category. Prior to achieving Platinum status in 2022, Solenis
has twice received Gold level assessment status.

The EcoVadis methodology is based on international corporate social responsibility standards, including the Global
Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact and ISO 26000, covering more than 200 procurement categories,
more than 175 countries and 21 grouped corporate social responsibility issues on four themes: environment, labor and
human rights, ethics and sustainable purchasing.

Ecofilm Line: final product with less impact on the environment

Source: tissue online
The commitment to sustainability is what drives Estik, on a daily basis, to align research and development, technology
and innovation with its values and mission. As a result of its efforts and responsibility towards the environment and
society, the company launched a line of sustainable plastic films, Ecofilm, which has the circular economy as its main
objective.

The novelty for those looking to combine sustainability with their business without losing quality when stretching different
types of loads are the Estik PCR and Estik BIO films.

Estik PCR is a stretch film produced with a percentage of recycled post-consumer resins (PCR), which can be
manufactured in different thicknesses, which encourage inclusive recycling in the resin manufacturing process. It was
specially developed for packaging and volumes of palletizable loads, ensuring the integrity and containment of products
from transport to storage, also ensuring the inviolability of the load by protecting against various impurities.

Its main advantages are:

• Final packaging performance similar to that of packaging made with virgin resins;
• Supplied with recycled material that includes a high level of certified post-consumer resins;
• Maintains recyclability like an all-PE film.
May 2023 Page 30 of 43

C&P INDUSTRY NEWS (March 2023 / May 2023) by Júio Takai and Ronaldo Ribeiro (continued)
Estik Bio is a differentiated stretch film that, in addition to guaranteeing the integrity and containment of the products from
transport to storage, and the inviolability of the cargo, is biodegradable, with the technology of an additive, formed by
organic compounds, which, when added to the plastic polymer chain, they attract micro-organisms. Thus, when the film is
discarded in an active microbial environment, such as sanitary landfills, for example, fungi and bacteria will form
decomposition colonies, promoting the biodegradation of this material, which will subsequently be transformed into
humus, biogas and water, unlike Oxidegradable alternatives on the market.

This film is ideal for use in various segments, such as the beverage industry, pharmaceuticals, food, home appliances,
logistics and distribution centers and wholesale networks.

Suzano invests BRL 250 million in the modernization of the factory in Araracruz
Source: The Tribune

Suzano's Aracruz Unit, one of the company's factories, which is a global reference in the manufacture of bioproducts
developed from the cultivation of eucalyptus, is undergoing the largest intervention in the last ten years. The retrofit
(modernization) of the Recovery Boiler B and the Overhaul (general maintenance) of the Cai Furnace on Line B of the
factory involved more than 1,250 workers and an investment of around R$ 250 million. These technological upgrades
were planned for two years and bring gains to production. The entire operation was carried out with adjustments to the
plant's balance sheet to reduce the impacts on the year's production, and the works were completed in December.

MODERNIZATION
The Boiler Retrofit is a modernization process for all components in the area, with a focus on safety, performance
optimization and extended service life. This update alone directly involved 1,100 people. This is the equipment's biggest
intervention since its inauguration in 1989. The work will increase the equipment's production capacity from 3,700 to 4,000
tss/day (tons of solid), which is equivalent to an 8% gain.

“It is a structuring project for the industrial unit, which will bring greater production capacity and operational reliability”,
stresses Suzano's Engineering Executive Manager, James Ferretti Stein. Also focusing on improving the operational
condition and technological updating, the Overhaul of the Cai Furnace on Line B involved the work of 150 people. The
work aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of the equipment, which is part of one of the three production lines at the
Suzano factory in Aracruz. Both the Recovery Boiler B and the Cai B Furnace are already in full operation and breaking
daily records.

According to James, “the operating results demonstrate the importance of investment in new technologies and represent
the quality of the services that were performed”. The appreciation of the Aracruz region is another important aspect of
these large investments. “The works and interventions were carried out prioritizing the hiring of local labor. Services such
as transport, food, accommodation are boosted by the extra flow of workers, contributing to the region's development
chain”, adds James. The Executive Industrial Manager of Suzano Aracruz, Fabrício José da Silva, emphasizes that the
works completed in December are important to maintain the excellent operating results achieved by the factory in Espírito
Santo. “This is a factory that has been in operation for several decades, whose modernization and technological updating
are essential to maintain a high level of competitiveness, in addition to contributing to our long-term goals related to ESG
(environmental, social and corporate governance) . The interventions carried out so far, in particular, expand our
generation of clean energy, from by-products of our operation”, he emphasizes.

Innovative partnerships result in new products Created from the words “innovation” and “sustainability”, the concept of
innovability guides Suzano's actions in different areas and has resulted in important partnerships for the development of
new products, a portfolio that the company calls of biopossibilities. These are initiatives that involve one of the
sustainability goals that will guide the company's cumin until 2030 - known as "Commitments to renew life" - and which
proposes the challenge of making available more than 10 million tons of products of renewable origin to replace those
made from plastic or other petroleum derivatives. These products indicate packaging, for example.

“We signed a partnership with iFood to reduce the use of plastic in delivery, and with Johnson & Johnson for one of the
absorbent lines: PHOTOS: DINULGAÇÃO Suzano's research environment: new uses for wood Always Free Adapt Plus
Eco”, explains Diogo Strapasson, Suzano's Research and Development (R&D) manager. He adds that the company has
also been evolving in the development of papers for contact with food, with the Bluecup Bio8 and Loopf lines), in addition
to flexible packaging for the cosmetics and food industries. Another biopossibility already at a more advanced stage
concerns the joint venture Woodspin, signed between Suzano and the Finnish startup Spinnova, an investment of R$ 22
million euros (about R$ 120 million), which will allow the innovative and disruptive application of microfibrillated cellulose

(MFC) in the production of sustainable textile fibers. The MFC cellulose, developed in Aracruz, is produced in Finland and
the Spinnova technology also uses other renewable-based chemical products, having a smaller carbon footprint than the
production of other textile yarns. Suzano also signed a partnership with Boticário that involves the use of Ecolig, the
company's bioproduct produced from kraft lignin, in the manufacture of makeup.

Lignin is a by-product of the pulp manufacturing process and is now reused by Suzano, offering multiple functionalities.
The company installed a plant in Limeira (SP) where it produces Ecolig. With a capacity of 20,000 tons/year, it is the first
certified eucalyptus kraft lignin factory in the world. The material can be used in the production of resins, adhesives,
antioxidants, chemicals, polyurethanes and in several other applications. With these and other innovations, Suzano has
been seeking to fulfill its purpose, which is to “renew life from the tree”, as Strapasson observes, highlighting the
company's contribution to a more sustainable planet.

Ence receives AENOR carbon neutrality certification for its Naturcell pulp
Source: pulp portal

The Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR), leader in the certification of management
systems, products, services and sustainability, recognized the carbon neutrality of Naturcell, Ence's cellulose pulp
included in its portfolio of special products. This AENOR certification demonstrates Ence's commitment to continuous
improvement of its environmental performance and compliance in the areas of climate action and sustainable product
development.

Thus, subject to an external and independent verification by AENOR, Ence obtained the Carbon Neutrality certificate for
all 2022 sales of Naturcell produced in the facilities of its biofactory in Pontevedra. To this end, in addition to implementing
actions aimed at reducing emissions at the facility itself, the company offset the remaining emissions through Emissions
Reduction Certificates (CERs).

Since 2018, the company has carried out an analysis of greenhouse gas emissions related to the company's activity – at
its facilities and main products – and has developed the necessary tools to update the calculation of the carbon footprint,
which is the basis for designing initiatives and projects focused on decarbonization.

In this sense, in 2020, Ence was a pioneer in its sector by analyzing the environmental profile of its products, using the
Environmental Product Declarations (EPD®) as a tool. The EDP is an environmental declaration program based on the
ISO 14025 standard, in which the environmental impacts of the product are identified and reported, in this case Naturcell
pulp, based on a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), which studies the environmental impacts of the product throughout its life
cycle in 12 categories, including the use of fossil fuels and the emissions and removals of biogenic and fossil CO2.

In this way, the company not only seeks to develop products with differential sustainability attributes, but also evaluates
these attributes objectively and impartially.

Naturcell pulp, the first carbon neutral product manufactured by Ence from bleached pulp and with an improved
environmental footprint, stands out for its high sustainability standards, such as lower consumption of wood, non-
renewable raw materials, water and energy in its production process, in addition to a smaller carbon footprint, among
others.

In more and more applications, materials based on this type of cellulose represent a sustainable alternative to the use of
plastics, representing a clear example of circular bioeconomy and ecological transition to a new model of consumption
through a natural, renewable, biodegradable and very versatile, coming from a sustainable and respectful production with
the environment.

With this AENOR Carbon Neutrality certification, the company shows compliance with two priority areas of action –
climate action and the development of sustainable products, paving the way for continuing to develop products with a
neutral carbon footprint.

SOLUTIONS TO TUNING TIP:

Sample Problem: The goal in this example is to find the required valve capacity (FpCv) for the
conditions listed below:

Air flow rate: 600 lb/hr Pressure drop, ∆p: 50 psi

Water flow rate: 26,000 lb/hr Temperature: 90°F (550°R)
Upstream pressure, P1: 150 psia Line size: 3 in. schedule 40

Answer:

Step 1: Determine the relative mass fractions of gas and liquid, fg and ff. The total mass flow rate is
w = 600 + 26,000 = 26,600 lb/hr.

The fraction of gas:

600
fg = = 0.0226
26,600

The fraction of fluid:

26,000
ff = = 0.9774
26,600

Step 2: Make a preliminary selection of valve type and determine the critical pressure drop ratio
factor (xT) for expansion factor (Y) of the valve. Assume a single-seated globe valve with a
contoured plug with flow under the plug (to open).

gpm 26,000lb 1gpm 1min 52 gpm 52 gpm

Cv = = * * = = = 7.35
P 1 8.33lb 60sec P 50

Double the CV for an approximation of the vapor through the valve.

Approx. CV = 14.7

Using the manufacture’s catalog tables, for valves ranging from 0.75” to 1-1/2” we obtain an average
estimate of xT = 0.68.

Find the expansion factor (Y):

x 0.334
Y =1− =1− = 0.8454
3Fk xt 3 (1)( 0.72 )

Step 2: Calculate the pressure drop ratio, (x):

50
x= = 0.334
150

Because x < xT, and the gas flow is not choked.

May 2023 Page 40 of 43

Find the ratio of specific heat factor (FK):

1.40
Fk = = 1.0
1.40

Step 4: Determine the effective specific volume of the mixture at upstream conditions. The specific
volume of the air can be calculated from the gas law equation:

 ft * lbf 
1545  ( 550  R ) ft 3
vg =  lb * mol * R 
= 1.358
 lbm  lbf   in 2  lbm
  2  2 
28.97 150 144
 lb * mol  in   ft 

From Table A7 - Properties of Water Specific Volume and Density at 90°F,

The liquid specific volume is:

ft 3
v f = 0.01610
lbm

The mixture effective specific volume ve :

f g vg (0.0226)(1.358) ft 3
ve = + f f vf = + ( 0.9774 )( 0.01610 ) = 0.0587
Y2 0.84542 lbm

Step 5: Calculate valve capacity from Equation:

w(lb / h) ve 26,600 0.0587

Fp Cv = = =14.39
N6 P 63.3 50

If the piping geometric factor (FP) is equal to 1, then the CV of the valve would be: 14.39

If the piping geometric factor (FP) is equal to 0.98, then the CV of the valve would be:

(0.98)(14.39)=14.1

We want to throttle at 50%, so size the valve CV for 200%.

14.1 • 2.00 = 28.2 CV

Choose a 1-1/2” valve with a CV = 35.8 and xT = 0.68

(The xT matches our calculation, so no recalculation is necessary)

14.1
%= = 39.4% of maximum Cv and about 63% open
35.8

Note: This is a 1-1/2-inch valve with a CV = 35.8 and should be used for this application.

ΔP Valve Limitations - Very Important!

On a simple back pressure or pressure reducing application, the drop across the valve may be calculated quite
accurately. This may also be true on a liquid level control installation, where the liquid is passing from one vessel at a
constant pressure to another vessel at a lower constant pressure. If the pressure difference is relatively small, some
allowance may be necessary for line friction.

On the other hand, in a large percentage of control applications, the pressure drop across the valve will be chosen
arbitrarily as a percentage of piping pressure drop. Any attempt to state a specific numerical rule for such a choice
becomes too complex to be practical. The design drop across the valve is sometimes expressed as a percentage of the
friction drop in the system, exclusive of the valve. A good working rule is that 15% to 40% of this friction drop (piping
pressure drop) should be available as drop across the valve. With a pressure drop of 40% you should be very safe, but
15% to 30% is usually all you need. With 30% drop, in other words, one-third of the total system drop, including all heat
exchangers, mixing nozzles, piping etc., is assumed to be absorbed by the control valve. This may sound excessive, but if
the control valve were completely eliminated from such a system, the flow increase would only be about 23%. In pump
discharge systems, the head characteristic of the pump becomes a major factor. For valves installed in extremely long or
high-pressure drop lines, the percentage of drop across the valve may be somewhat lower, but at least 15% (up to 25%
where possible) of the system drop should be taken.

Remember one important fact, the pressure differential

absorbed by the control valve in actual operation will
be the difference between the total available head and
that required to maintain the desired flow through the
valve. It is determined by the system characteristics
rather than by the theoretical assumptions of the
engineer. In the interest of economy, the engineer tries
to keep the control valve pressure drop as low as
possible. However, a valve can only regulate flow by
absorbing and giving up pressure drop to the system.
As the proportion of the system pressure drop across
the valve is reduced, its ability to further increase flow
rapidly disappears. Valves work in the same way as
orifice plates and head meters, using the Bernoulli
principle.

In some cases, it may be necessary to make an

arbitrary choice of the pressure drop across the valve
because there is not enough process data are
available at the time of design. For instance, if the valve is in a pump discharge line, having a discharge pressure of 100
psi (7 bars), a drop of 10 to 25 psi (0.7 to 1.7 bar) may be assumed sufficient. This is true if the pump discharge line is not
extremely long or complicated by large drops through heat exchangers or other equipment. The tendency should be to
use the higher figure. On more complicated systems, consideration should be given to both maximum and minimum
operating conditions. Masoneilan Valve or Fisher Valve product companies offer engineering assistance for analysis of
such applications. Both companies also offer free valve sizing software for selection and engineering of valve applications.
