About This Guide

Glamour Posing meets Fashion Esprit

There are many differing niches and styles when it comes to art.
Often times when two of these styles collide or cross over, it results
in a fantastically creative new form.

But this does not happen often and very rarely occurs in the highly
specialized world of photography. In this guide, I will be showing
the benefits of thinking outside the box by applying fashion model
posing techniques within the realm of glamour photography. This
may be a technique you have already implemented or perhaps
something you have never considered before, regardless…

...it is a powerful tool for a model or photographer.

Initially, you may not be clear on what the difference between

glamour modeling and fashion modeling is. It is indeed a fine line
but a very clear one.

Exciting Different Forms

As you look through the images in this guide, you will quickly see
what fashion posing has to offer to glamour modeling. Each set
of images retains its core in glamour modeling in that the model
is seminude throughout many of the images but never once are
we bored while looking at her. This is because she is offering us so
much more than just a typical sexy pose as she is free to
experiment and move in various ways.

Fashion modeling is about engaging the viewer’s eye.

Exciting lines, forms, expressions - all play together either into

creating a mood or simply making a pleasant image to look at.
Generally these factors all lean towards one overall goal: sell the
product. The beautiful thing about glamour photography is that
you do not have to solely focus the viewer’s attention on desiring
a product, but you can rather focus all the attention on creating a
mood. Your model is the tool in this and by allowing her freedom
of expression and movement you open up a million new
opportunities.

Enjoy your journey!

Glamour vs. Fashion

Glamour vs. Fashion: The Difference

Fashion photography involves shooting a model that is selling a
product, whether it is the swimsuit she is wearing, a watch, or a
bottle of expensive vodka. Glamour photography involves many
of the same elements: a beautiful model conveying an emotion
through her expression and posing. The major difference is that
she is not selling a product. Through her modeling and the talent
of the photographer, she will deliver the viewer a mood or feeling.

Within glamour modeling, the poses implemented can be

limited and less creative as fashion modeling. Often times in
fashion photography, models are allowed to freely switch from
one bizarre, emotive, or unique pose to another without restric-
tion. When this mindset is applied to glamour modeling, which is
comprised of methodically arranged poses and limited to a preset
range, moods can be expressed not only more clearly but in new
and creative ways.

Blurred Lines
Any photographer is going to state that their delivery of an
emotion is the crux of their work. How this is done and how well
this is done is where the wide variance in art and style come into
play.

It is impossible to say “this style of photography is better than this

one,” but it is possible to understand which form is more effective
at touching upon a feeling in the viewer. And fashion modeling is
very effective at selling clothes, cars, anything you can think of - a
pretty girl standing next to it will increase the sales in that product.

As the years have progressed, fashion modeling has become more

and more centered around sex and skin as the advertising indus-
try has learned what a powerful tool it is. More and more fashion
models seem to resemble glamour models, standing on tip toes in
bathing suits with a sultry gleam in their eyes. This is so commonly
placed in fashion photography that it is almost unrecognizable to
the untrained eye. The real question is though…how come this is
not working in the other direction as well? Glamour models rarely
seem to borrow from the world of fashion photography.

In this guide, I will be showing you the effectiveness of utilizing

fashion posing combined with the glamour modeling style...

Getting Started

Learn How You Can Plan Model Poses

Posing in general is not all that easy. There is much more to it than
just standing or lying down for the photos.

If you have a great pose, the viewer will love it. And that’s precisely
why you should give it a lot of thought on how to achieve this.

Take this subject matter serious and come up with a plan for the
poses you want your model to be in.

You have to work together with your model here.

Getting It Started:
The Basics of Model Posing
If you have someone experienced, the person will already know a
great deal about posing. But not everybody is this lucky. If you get
to work with a newbie, then it is best that you start with some basic
poses.

Just make her stand and ask her to look down or away. She can
change her body angle or move the arms and legs a bit. But no
more than this! Because this easy session is like a warm up and
makes your model feel more confident.

There are certain other issues though which you will have to keep
in mind. For instance, under all circumstances you must ensure
that your model is feeling comfortable.

Individual Poses

Taking an Individualized Approach

Glamour & Nude and glamour posing is all about the outer and
inner beauty of your subject. When she is posing, she is letting you
capture this beauty on lens. Every model looks different, and so are
their approaches. Therefore, it is important that you have a
different plan each time. Create a strategy beforehand, but change
it to suit the purpose better as you work with the subject.

Tip: Poses for Your Market

Every photographer has a target market in mind, and takes
pictures according to this. This is very important. If your pictures
are not tuned to the target audience, then you can be sure that they
won’t be appreciated. This doesn’t help anybody. So understand
your market, do some thinking on the kind of poses that may
appeal to people in this market. Make a list, and you know what
you should shoot.

Keep Your Eyes Open

You will see that some of the best poses may come by surprise. Un-
planned! These images are often the most appealing ones as well.
That’s the fun of posing. These images look so good because people
look normal in them. If she is trying her best to do a pose for you,
then it will certainly look artificial, and it will come across - in the
picture you take.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 7

Hands, Arms & Legs

Hands, Arms, Legs: Always Difficult

Those who do not know how to pose, or have inadequate experience, will often keep the hands dangling
awkwardly. This will come out poorly in the picture. You need a scenario for this. Deal with it in such a way so that
the model can keep her hands somewhere while she is posing. In other words, you should make the hands a part of
the pose itself.

It is much the same for the arms and the legs as well...

C/S/I

Model Silhouettes Forms:

C, S, and I Poses
It is not possible for anybody to memorize poses,
and it is not recommended that you do so either in
order to avoid repetitions. However, it helps if you
know some basic poses.

C/S/I – not to be confused with the TV serials –

is a unique program that was developed to teach
camera posing to models. Now, these poses are
considered old-fashioned, stiff and stilted.
However, we are still following the basic idea of
C/S/I.

It starts with diagrams of different poses:

• Draw a line through the shoulders and then

another one across the hips.

• Now draw another line from the center of

shoulder to the center of hip.
This is your body line.

• The fourth line should be from the center of

body to the foot.

• The last line is from the center of shoulder to

the center of head.

These lines will make C, S, or I, and thus the name

– CSI. Most poses you will find fall into one of
these three categories. It tells you how to angle the
hips, how to balance the weight and such others.

If you follow this closely, you will be able to come

up with better poses in mind.

C/S/I

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 12

C/S/I

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 13

Posing Basics

Posing Start: Head and Shoulders

The first rule of good shoots is that the subject’s shoulders should
be turned at an angle to the camera.

To have the shoulders facing the camera straight on makes the

person look wider and stockier than normal. While this pose is
used frequently in the world of fashion, in glamour and nude such
poses will look unpleasant.

Whether the subject is seated or standing, another rule concerns

the line of the shoulders:
One shoulder should be noticeably higher than the other, which
is to say that the line of the shoulders should not be parallel to the
ground.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 14

Posing Basics

Start with the Feet

In practical terms, to accomplish this correct positioning of the shoulders in a shoot where the subject is standing,
you should start with the feet. The basic rule is that no one should have both feet together. Instead, one foot should
be brought forward. This causes the shoulders to turn at a slight angle to the camera. The subject should also place
her weight on the back leg - as this causes the forward knee to bend and the rear shoulder to dip lower than the
forward one.

In a seated portrait, simply having the subject lean forward from the waist will create a sloping line to the
shoulders, provided that the person is at an angle to the camera. Simply positioning the body in this way creates
the first and basic dynamic lines within the composition, since the resulting lines in the body will now be diagonal
instead of vertical or horizontal.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 15

Posing Basics

Head Tilt
With the shoulders turned at an angle to the camera, the head is then turned or tilted, usually at a different angle
than the shoulders. By doing this, you slant the natural line of the person’s eyes. When the face is not tilted, the line
of the eyes is straight and parallel to the bottom edge of the photograph, leading to a symmetrical, static image. By
tilting the person’s face right or left, the implied line becomes diagonal, making the pose more dynamic and
interesting to the viewer. These posing guidelines are in effect, regardless of whether the photo is a close-up,
head and shoulders, or full-length portrait.

As with most posing suggestions, keep in mind that a more natural look is achieved when the tilt of the person’s
head is slight and not exaggerated. In the feminine pose, the body often faces away from the light source. While
this is something of a cliché technique for posing, like most clichés, it exists for a reason. With the head tilted
toward the near shoulder, the feminine pose creates the impression of mystery and vulnerability - typical female
traits. Whether to tilt the subject’s head toward the near shoulder or the far shoulder is a somewhat controversial
issue among photographers.
These “rules” are frequently disregarded because individual differences and lighting will determine whether the
person is better portrayed as strong or vulnerable, but the strategy is mentioned here so that you can decide for
yourself.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 16

Posing Basics

Body at an Angle to the Camera

As with the planes of the face, turning the body
plane so that it is at an angle to the camera will
produce a more dynamic effect and will enhance
the various curves and planes of the body.

The only exception is when you want to emphasize

the mass of the subject, such as with an athlete, or
when the person is very petite or thin.

One of the basic requirements of a good working

model is that she be thin so that, if need be, she
can be photographed head-on without looking
larger than average.

Turn Away from the Main Light

Turning the body away from the main light will
help to maximize body definition and enhance the
detail shapes.

If you face the subject’s body plane toward the light

source, you risk “washing-out” or flattening-out
important detail in the form.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 17

Posing Basics

Arms and the Triangle Base

The triangle is one of the most pleasing and
dynamic forms in all of photography. Because the
triangle is a series of three lines, two of which are
diagonal, it has the result of providing direction
and visual movement in a shoot. Creating triangles
and exploiting natural triangles in posing is one of
the basic skills of good composition.

To create a triangular base for the composition,

the subject’s arms (regardless of how much of the
subject is showing in the final photo) should not
be allowed to fall to their sides, but should project
outward to provide gently sloping.
This is commonly achieved asking the model to
separate her arms from her torso, creating a bend
in the elbows. In a seated portrait, what normally
happens is that the subject will move one or both
of her hands closer to her waist, thus producing
slightly projecting elbows.

In a standing pose, there should also be a space

between the upper arms and torsos. This triangu-
lar base in the composition attracts the viewer’s
eye upward, toward the subject’s face.

Another way to accomplish the triangular base

is with a posing table on which the far elbow can
be rested. This provides the sloping line of the
shoulders and the triangular base so vital to good
composition.
The posing table is usually black and nearly invis-
ible in the final portrait; in fact, it is often cropped
from the composition.

Posing Basics

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 19

Hands

Importance of the Hands

Human beings communicate in a multitude of ways. Our hands are one of the most important tools we use in
expressing ourselves to others. Next time you are conversing with a group of friends, notice how frequently we
use our hands when we speak. It is only natural then, that the models hands receive a lot of attention when a
viewer looks at a photograph.

The observer is subconsciously trying to decipher what the models hands are expressing. Keeping hands in mind
and following a few simple rules will help enhance your photographs.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 20

Hands
Hands and Wrists: General Guidelines
When posing a model’s body, it is important not to forget the placement of her hands. One very simple trick
is to make sure both hands never fall on the same horizontal line. An invisible line exists in the space between
two hands and if that line is perfectly straight, it leads to a boring image. Using that space to build an imaginary
diagonal line makes for a much more engaging photo.

When possible, you should avoid showing the back or palm of the hand. The hand’s profile is slimmer and has a
much more interesting shape. The surface area of the palm or back of the hand is much larger than one expects
and can be distracting in a photograph. Additionally, the delicate skin on the back of the hand is a sure-fire
indicator of your model’s age.

There are always going to be exceptions to the rules though, and you will find that only showing the profile of
the hand can be limiting. Creating a seductive pose by using hands in a special way or implementing a “stay
away” feeling are just two examples thereof.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 21

Hands

Relaxed Positions
If you notice that your model’s hands appear stiff, it is because she is tense. Like the mouth, hands express
tension more than other areas of the body. Allow your model to shake her hands in order to relax them.
Then they will most certainly fall into a comfortable, natural looking position.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 22

Hands

Hands at the Waist

If your model puts her hands on her waist, there are a few rules to follow. Do not have the entire hand displayed
because the thumb makes for distracting angles and clumsy looking hands. Have her hide her thumb and gently
bend her wrist as well. The wrist should not turn towards the camera though, but rather downwards or away
from the camera.
Even in this position, splayed fingers are a distraction, so be sure you are watching out for them.

TIP: Keep the fingers together and in a slightly bent

position. Spread fingers create too many lines for the
viewer’s eyes to read.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 23

Hands

Hands Around the Face

Hands near the face can be a very tricky thing. They can come across stiff, awkward and masculine in appearance.
To avoid these things, stay away from harsh, balled fists or splayed fingers. A graceful hand is curved in an ele-
gant line which casually touches the model.

If you per se desire to have your model’s chin resting on her hand, there is an effective and ineffective way to go
about this. Placing her chin on her closed fist is going to draw immediate attention to the center of that large
space and looks aggressive in nature on top.

Never have her actually rest her weight on her hand either as the pressure can create unpleasant looking wrinkles.
For a gentler looking image, simply turn the hand by 90 degrees. Only show the profile curve of the little finger
and you will end up with a much more attractive photo.

fashionNUDE POSES with Vicka Starr 24

Warm &
Fuzzy

Texture instantly brings a photograph
to life. These images are packed with
fun textures that make the
viewer imagine reaching out and
feeling the soft collar of my model’s
sweater, creating an engaging
image. Her simple sweater can be used
in multiple ways though and she is not
limited by the photographer. The fur
collar also can allude to an animalistic
fierceness which is expressed by her
bold roar into the camera. Whether
she is curling up into the warmth of
her garment or letting it fall off her
rounded shoulders, the use of texture
can heighten your glamour photos.

Bend Me,
Shape Me

Here is a beautiful example of the
perfect combination of fashion
posing in glamour modeling. Model
Vicka creates fantastic shapes with
her body by bending, leaning, and
arching. Dynamic body lines which
create interesting shapes excite the
eye and in turn make for a winning
image. It doesn’t always have to be
about pointing her toes, sticking her
bum out, and making sexy eyes at the
camera. We can easily see that the
more the model is allowed to
experiment with her body, the more
interesting the images become.

Nothing is sexier than a woman
wearing a simple white collared
men’s dress shirt. Beautiful scenarios
rush through the viewer’s imagina-
tion and it is easy to understand how
powerful one item of clothing can be.
However, it should also be observed
that within this set an innocent and
playful mood is presented by the
cheerful and engaging expressions and
poses offered by my model.
The interplay between her facial
expression and the placement of her
hands also heightens the sense of
intimacy that otherwise could be
difficult to show.

Naughty or
Nice

It comes at no surprise to you
that facial expressions are the key
ingredient for breathtaking modeling.
This set of images shows how the
entire mood of these images can
change by means of her facial expressions
and posing. Her outfit suggests inno-
cence: the cardigan and scarf are remi-
niscent of a colligate school girl. If our
model has a sweet smile on her face, it
comes across as a cute and fun image.
If our model has a sultry or pensive
expression, the image comes across as
naughty and exciting.
Combining this with a wide variety
of postures, she is able to tell a story
simply by applying body language and
facial expressions.

Contours &
Character

Vicka in this series is dressed in the
simplest of lingerie, or lack thereof, but
manages to deliver a wide ranging set
of images. The creation of interesting lines,
curves and angles with the placement
of her figure generates a dynamic
image which is intriguing and thought
provoking. Fashion
modeling often incorporates the
“awkward” pose which is a highly
effective posture. In this pose the
model may slouch her upper body,
folding it over on itself while
maintaining an elegant stance with
her legs. A stimulating form is created
that is unique in its appeal.
Images 83-84 are an interpretation
of this pose. Letting a model come up
with new shapes that are not solely
about creating a “sexy” image will in
turn result in an artistic and innovative
approach which contributes
greatly to a successful photograph.

Using What
You Have

The use of props is a feature that
fashion modeling and glamour
modeling share. However, in glamour
modeling we often observe that a boa,
necklace, wrap or other prop is used
in a limited sense. Either it covers up
a portion of the model or she is using
it in a seductive manner. Here we see
that props like a sweater or shawl
can be draped, stretched and manipu-
lated in many interesting ways. The
model is able to create an extension of
her body by stretching the shawl or
sweater into new shapes and
establish a wide variety of postures
because of this.
Additionally, we see the major effect
that black and white versus color can
have on the mood of an image.

Beautifully
Exposed

Like the previous set of images, these
pictures rely heavily on the relation
between model and clothing. She is
not simply wearing a cute little dress;
she is using features of the dress to
heighten the confident yet exposed
mood. Her unflinching gaze
combined with her bare breasts
boldly revealed through the dress
make the mood very clear and
enthralling as well. There is not a
directly “suggestive” picture here but
when we look at them, we are surely
feeling that this is an empowered and
sexy woman because of her posture
and facial expression.
Thinking outside the box will often
lead you to quite unexpected results.

Final Thoughts

Remember one thing: There is no single rule that you must fol-
low when you are capturing a nude or glamour pose on your
camera. Yes, you should always have a scenario to begin with.
But you need to be flexible enough so that these plans can be
changed to bring out the best in your nude model. You might
have had a few poses in mind, but you’ll see where it is going.

Give your model some freedom when she is doing the

photo pose. You may find that what you finally end up with
is actually better than what you initially had planned. The
fact is that a lot of the poses might come spontaneously.

So be ready with your camera to capture them. There is

no point in missing out on something that you might
have to regret later.

Of course, you have the liberty to reject these pictures later...

But most of the time you won’t!
