we continue our journey and exploring the music
of our country Philippines. But before that we will
have fun first. This game is called “Memory card
game” Kindly read the mechanics of the game
(students will read the mechanics of the game)
1. Create two (2) cards with a matching concepts.
2. Duck race will decide who will be the player to
play the game.
3. If the two cards match, they may keep them
4. If they don’t match they need to turn them back
over.
5. Players who will pick the right match will
receive plus points.

C. ABSTRACTION
For us to have a better understanding
about our topic let us now explore the
world of Philippine theater.

Let us first define what is theater?


Kindly read the definition of theater.

Theater is a collaborative form of performing arts
that uses live performances to present the
experience of a real or imagined event before a
live audience in a specific place, often in a stage.
Here are some general musical
characteristics of a theatre
(student will read)
1. It has a catchy music in a popular style.
2. It consists of solo songs, duets, choruses and
ensemble.
3. Orchestra or band accompaniment is used
4. There is a spoken dialogue
When we say Philippine theatre
(student will read the definition of Philippine
theater)
Tanghalang Pilipino (Philippine Theater) is the
leading exponent of Philippine theater and the
resident drama company of the Cultural Center of
the Philippines since its organization in 1987.
Now let’s move on to the different
Philippine Theatrical forms and their
characteristics. The first one is Komedya.
(student will read)
-Komedya is one of the colourful theatrical
traditions in the Philippines.
-This is a theatrical form that describes the
conflicts of Christians and muslims.

-Komedya comes from the 16th century Spanish


comedia (play).
-It was used by the Spanish to spread Christianity.
-It is a play written in verse which uses traditional
methods of marcha (march) for entrance or exit,
Batalla (choreograph lighting) and magia (magical
effects)
There are two types of Komedya
1. Secular Komedya
2. Religious Komedya (student will read the definition of Secular
komedya)
Secular Komedya
-It usually performed in town celebrations. An
example of Secular Komedya popularized in the
1600's is the "Moro-moro," that use stories that
revolve around kings, queens, princes, princesses,
animals, and supernatural beings.

-Most of the time, it portrays the clash between


Christians and Filipino

Moving on to the second type of


komedya, the Religious komedya. (student will read the definition of Religious
komedya)
Religious Komedya
-Mostly performed to enhance religious
festivities.
-It focuses on the life of religious icons (Jesus
Christ, St. Michael, and other patron saints.)
examples are Siete Palabras, Comedia de San
Miguel and Senakulo; the Lenten presentations of
Passion of Christ.

Another Philippine theatrical form is the
sarsuela. Kindly read class
(student will read the definition of sarsuela)
-Sarsuela is an art form of lyric theatre drama,
comical in nature and it is incorporated with
singing, dancing and dialogue.
-It is a play in prose.
-Sarsuela originated from Spain and was made
popular in the Philipppines in the 1800’s.

- It portrays the typical Filipino realities and


stories and social relations which viewers can
relate in their lives such as elections and feasts,
marriage and family, vices and values.
One of the most famous sarsuela in our country is
“Walang Sugat” by Severino Reyes.

Bodabil is also a Philippine theatrical form.

- Bodabil is another stage show that became
popular during the Japanese period based on the
French vaudeville. These were called stage show
during Japanese occupation and later variety
shows.
- Bodabil was developed because city growers
wanted to uplift their emotional stability from the
usual stage acts to a stage presentation featuring
comedy, musical, monologue, skits,
impersonators, acrobats and even magical acts.
- Bodabil formed musical trends and musicians;
performers; and performance genres. The
entertainers helped to make jazz and blues popular
(the teacher will present a video showing bodabil) and admired in our country.

Among the popular bodabil stars were Togo and (students will watch the video)
Pugo, Bayani Cansimiro, Dolphy, Dely Atay-
Atayan, Rogelio de la Rosa, Leopoldo Salcedo
and Katy Dela cruz.

Those are examples of Philippine Theatrical


forms.

D. GENERALIZATION
We have Komedya, Sarsuela and
Bodabil.

When we say komedya it is one of the


colourful theatrical traditions in the
Philippines.This is a theatrical form that
describes the conflicts of Christians and
muslims.

It seems that you really understand our
lesson for today. You will be having your
another activity for this topic called “Itaas
mo, sagot mo”
I will now divide your class into four
groups. Each student will pick one
colored paper.
All greens will be the group 1
All yellow will be the group 2
All red will be the group 3
And all student who got color orange will
be the group 4.
Go now to your respective groups so we
can now start the activity. (students will proceed to their respective groups)

of illustration board
2. They have 15 seconds to write their answers
3. Each group will simultaneously raise their
answers.
4. The group that will get the correct answer will
