Film Review

José Rizal is a 1998 Philippine historical drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and starring Cesar

Montano as José Rizal. The film was based on a true story of Filipino patriot José Rizal, who was
imprisoned under the Spanish colonization and tells Rizal's story until the final day of his execution.
Accused of treason, Dr. P. Rizal awaits trial and meets with his government-appointed counsel, Luis
Taviel de Andrade. The two build the case and arguments for the defense as significant events in the
central figure's life prior to his incarceration unfold. Upon hearing his life story, Taviel begins to realize
that the accused is not only innocent but exhibits in fact all the qualities of an ordinary man. When the
mock trial unreels, Taviel is all set to act as the prime advocate for his client as Rizal himself is about to
give an earth-moving speech to defend his honor and address his countrymen. Meanwhile, the Spanish
authorities have worked out the vast political machinery to ensure a guilty verdict. A revolution awaits in
the wings. Blood is shed when the "katipunan", founded by Andres Bonifacio, attack the Spaniards.
If given a chance I would like to be the editor of one of this film, through editing I will show the great
artistic and technical capabilities of Filipinos in creating film, there are factors that prevent the Filipino
film industry to create more films about Rizal’s work and his era:
Established Filipino director Marilou Diaz- Abaya apparently saw lots of promise in Caesar Montano and
cast him as her Jose Rizal; I can think of better actors but otherwise her film is visually dazzling, well-
mounted biography of a Filipino hero. Caesar Montano enthusiastically bites into the quintessential role
of Jose Rizal, with impressive Spanish lines and good affectations.

The actors’ dedication for the film is inevitable especially Cesar Montano who is very perfect for the role
of Rizal. His values and great performance as the lead actor is perfect and has a great impact on me as
the audience of the said film. Also, the supporting casts like Jhong Hilario who played as Rizal’s servant,
Jaime Fabregas as Rizal’s attorney did a great job on portraying their role effortlessly. They made it easy
for me to understand the flow of the story. We, as a Filipino citizen we must value and love our country
like what our heroes did.

Personal Aspects
1. "What matters death if one dies for what one loves, for native land and cherished ones" ―A
hero may be easy to spell but it is never easy to become. Heroes are people who have gained
enormous identity among others. They are role models, well-respected, nationalistic and have
contributed to society causing national unity resulting to something really big like freedom.
2. If given a chance I would like to be ones of his character in his novel because Character
development can also refer to the changes a character undergoes over the course of a story
as a result of their actions and experiences. Or simply want share his burden.
3. I want to thank Rizal for all of his effort for this country, Philippines today is what it is now
because of the sacrifices you’ve made. Though we’re plunge into chaos at the moment, the
freedom and rights we have right now is irreplaceable. Life is short. But we can give meaning to
it. And you taught that to us. The unparalleled loyalty and patriotism you’ve shown to our
country are the torch that lights our way.
4. The major lesson we can learn from Dr. Jose Rizal is love for God, country and countrymen. their
bravery and courage, he is the gentlest and noblest
5. A. is life being truly amazing and colorful for the hero's experiences mold him to what God
purposely do to him. Jose Rizal, for my own insights, tells me the value of certain things which is
important for the success of his life. That is God, Family, Country and Self. He could not reach as
that far without God.
B. the film is an excellent portrayal of what the Filipino heroes went through for their love for
the country. The insertion of scenes from Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo also helps to
remind the audience how Dr. Jose Rizal assimilated the events of his own life to those of his
characters.
6. The movie Jose Rizal is a great interpretation of the Philippines's tragic history. I believe it got all
its facts right which would help a lot in studying
