Protective means shall be taken to prevent dissimilar metals being in contact where
the presence of water or moisture could promote deterioration through electrolytic
action.
All expansion joint contractor take necessary construction water spillage on erected
mechanical works.
2.4.16 ANCHORS
Expansion joints shall be provided in all pipes where pipes cross expansion joints of
the building.
Unless otherwise shown on the Contract Drawings expansion joints shall be of the
axial bellows type manufactured from stainless steel with internal sliding sleeves.
Each bellow shall be provided with pipe guides either side and elsewhere where
recommended by the manufacturer. Each guide shall not be less than two pipe
diameters in length, the first guide shall not be more than one-and-a-half pipe
diameters from the expansion joint and the second guide shall not be more than 15
pipe diameters from the first guide.
During pressure testing, bellows shall be replaced by spacer pieces or tied to ensure
that excess forces are not transmitted to anchors.
Provide and install valves and cocks as indicated on the Contract Drawings and as
specified below:

Valves and cocks shall be provided where shown and/or in accordance with this
Specification to achieve:
Valves and cocks shall have screwed or flanged ends compatible with the
Specification for Pipework and Fittings included herein. Unless otherwise specified
or agreed in writing with the Engineer:-
Valves and cocks 65 mm diameter and above shall have flanged ends.
All valves and cocks selected by the Contractor for incorporation into the Works
shall be suitable for the fluid handled, working and test pressures and operating
temperature of the systems on which they are to be installed.
Where regulating or control valve sizes are different to the pipe size in which they
are to be incorporated such difference shall be taken up with an appropriate
reducer fitted immediately adjacent to the valve.
The Contractor shall ensure that all valves and cocks selected for incorporation
into the works fully comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Housing,
Electricity and Water.
The Contractor shall supply six sets of loose keys and any appropriate special
spanners or tools necessary for the operation, adjustment and maintenance for
each size and type of valve and cock incorporated into the Works.
Valve labels and charts shall be provided as specified in the 'Thermal Insulation,
Painting and Identification' section of this Specification.
67 mm & larger Cast iron flanges wedge type sluice valve with gunmetal
faces, bronze screw and gunmetal nut to BS EN 1074 with
flanges to the appropriate table of BS EN 1092.
Where concealed in walls, valves for cold water and hot water services shall be
complete with TOL metal handle, sliding flange and blue/red marking discs.
b) Stop Cocks
Stop cocks shall be clear-way high pressure screw down pattern with crutch handle
and raised seating to BS EN 1010. Where visible stop cocks shall be easy clean
pattern. Stop cocks shall be double union pattern.
Drain Cocks shall be of the key operated screw down gland type drain cock in
accordance with B.S. 2879. Bodies shall be of bronze with BSP screwed male inlet
and serrated outlet for hose connection. In addition other technical parameter shall
be followed
• Construction: DZR copper alloy body & spindle, DZR copper alloy
surface chrome plated ball, PTFE sealing
• Max. operating pressure: 10 bar (PN10) Max. operating temperature:
110oC End connection: Threaded
• Handle: Aluminum red painted locking bolt
65 mm diameter and above valves shall be of swing pattern suitable for both
horizontal and vertical mounting. Valve bodies shall be double flanged cast iron with
a bolted cast iron bonnet. The valve seat shall provide free flow characteristic and
the disc of bronze faced cast iron or gunmetal construction to offer minimum
resistance to flow.
For all horizontally mounted applications the bolted cover shall be fitted with a
manual air vent cock. Valves shall be in accordance with BS EN 12334. In additional
following points to be comply
Regulating valves shall be fitted on water service return pipes on each branch and
sub branch of the circulation network.
For all services, regulating valves shall only be used for adjusting the fluid flow rate
and not for measuring flow rate:
• Type: fixed orifice double regulating valves as per BS7350. Dual test
points are provided for measuring flow from across the orifice. Non-rising
stem sealed with double O-ring of EPDM Construction: Dezincification
resistant copper alloy body
• Max. Operating pressure: 20bar (PN20) Max. operating temperature:
130°C Ends: Female threaded to BS21
• Hand wheel operated with pre-setting digital display and memory pre-
setting
Size DN 65 to Above
65 mm diameter and above valves shall be similar to those described above but
shall have double flanged cast iron bodies. In addition following points to be comply.
• Type: variable orifice double regulating valve with dual test points for DP
measurement Construction: Cast iron body, DZR alloy/cast iron
bonnet, and EPDM O-rings
• Max. Operating pressure: 16bar (PN16) Max. operating temperature:
130°C Ends: Flanged ends to EN1092-2
• Hand wheel operated with pre-setting digital display and memory pre-
setting
These shall be supplied by the specialist Automatic Control Firm selected, and
designed to operate correctly to the requirements and dictates of the associated
automatic control systems.
The valves shall be screwed or flanged in accordance with the Specification of the
pipework into which they are installed.
The Contractor shall note that in all instances the automatic control valves specified
herein have been sized in order that the pressure drop of the services flow through
the valve is arranged for optimum control characteristic. Any alternative control
valves proposed by the Contractor shall have similar pressure drop characteristics.
The pipelines and isolating valves on each port of the control valves shall be as
stated on the Contract Drawings, and the pipeline reducers to the control valve sizes
where required, shall be made immediately adjacent to the valve ports.
g) Ball Valves
Manual air release valves shall be of the key operated needle type with non-
corrodible needles and brass bodies of the spoutless types.
Automatic air vents shall be incorporated in the positions shown on the Contract
Drawings unless otherwise agreed in writing with the Engineer. Valves shall
comprise gunmetal body enclosing a copper or stainless steel cylindrical float
operating a needle valve that shall seat and close when the body is flooded. All
working parts shall be non-corrodible.
Each connection from the pipework system to the automatic air release valves shall
incorporate an isolating valve and drain cock.
The discharge connection from each automatic air release valve shall be piped to
drain.
i) Strainers
Up to 50 diameter strainers shall be of ‘Y’ type with bronze bodies having screwed
BSP taper threads. Strainers shall incorporate removable cylindrical brass or
stainless steel screen with maximum 1/16” diameter mesh.
65 mm diameter and above strainers shall be of the 'Y' type with double flanged cast
iron body incorporating bolted cover. Strainers shall incorporate removable
cylindrical brass or stainless steel screen with maximum 1/16” diameter mesh.
Strainers 100 mm and above shall be fitted with a hose union drain cock for cleaning
purposes. A length of flexible hose shall be provided to facilitate the drainage
operation. Other parameter shall be followed as per 65mm diameter and above
construction
j) Test Plugs
Where indicated on the Contract Drawings test plugs/ points shall be as follows:
Where system working and test pressures, type of fluid and operating temperature
permit, test plugs/ points shall be of the universal type with brass body and ethylene
- propylene based self-seating synthetic rubber seal suitable for both pressure and
temperature measurement. The seal shall be protected by a screwed brass cap.
Pressure: connections made into the pipework system and fitted with a pressure
gauge test cock and screwed plug.
Temperature: open ended with fitted stainless steel well with screwed cap set into
the pipeline. Where inserted into pipelines of 50 mm diameters and below the
pipework shall be expanded locally to 65 mm with eccentric reducers.
Self-sealing mechanical test plugs. e.g. Spring loaded stainless ball, shall not be
used without the Engineers prior written approval.
Pressure and temperature test plugs shall be provided in the following locations and
elsewhere where specifically indicated on the Contract Drawings:
Where fixed instruments can be removed and their connections used to take
pressure and/or temperature readings using portable test instruments additional test
plugs shall not be provided.
The commissioning station shall be used primarily for measurement of the fluid flow
rate. The fixed orifice valves shall also be used for isolation purposes.
Each commissioning valve body shall be provided with four bosses drilled and
tapped 1/4" BSP. On each side of the valve seat one boss shall be fitted with a
blank plug and the other with a test plug as specified elsewhere in this Specification.
65 mm and above shall consist of orifice plate and cast iron double regulating valve
with double flanged cast iron bodies.
Construction
Actuator Controls
For sizes DN15 to DN50 Actuators shall be thermo-electric type or motoric type,
with modulating control IP 54 rated actuator housing. On/Off actuators are with
240V operating voltage, normally closed. Modulating actuators are with 24V
operating voltage, and 0-10Vdc control signal all actuators shall have a visual
indication to indicate the position of stroke

2.4.19 INSTRUMENTS
All altitude and pressure gauges shall have 100 mm diameter dials and shall be
supplied by the same manufacturer to ensure a matched appearance.
a) Thermometers
Thermometers shall be stem type with Mercury in glass prismatic capillary protected
with a metal body. The main body-length (the stem) shall be not less than 200 mm.
Stem shall be of brass construction with 13 mm MPT (1/2" MPT) connection.
Thermometer range shall be -6 deg C to 50 deg. C (20 deg F to 120 deg F) unless
otherwise advised by the Engineer.
Thermometers shall be provided at inlet and outlet of each chiller, each AHU, each
major branch circuit and where shown on the drawings, or in the Specification.
A brass thermometer well of suitable length, shall be installed in the pipeline at the
location of each thermometer to facilitate its removal without causing water leakage.
