4 Analytical filtration for HPLC

Analytical filtration for HPLC
Sample filtration is key to ensuring accurate, reproducible HPLC
results. Filtration prevents column clogging and damage and can
help to improve signal-to-noise ratios, maintain clean baselines, and
maximize instrument uptime.

We offer Millipore® membranes, syringe

filters, and hardware accessories for reliable HPLC filtration membranes
filtration that reduces the presence of
contaminants in the sample or mobile phase.

Millex® syringe filters offer unsurpassed quality, Membrane filtration supports

consistency, and reliability. The overmolded
housing design provides a more robust syringe
filter, enabling solutions to be filtered faster. The
optimized housing design maintains 50% less
hold volume than traditional syringe filters to
ensure maximum sample recovery.

HPLC filtration membranes
Selecting the ideal filter begins with understanding filter characteristics. Material, pore
size, flow rate, chemical compatibility, level of extractables, and application should all be
considered when choosing a membrane. We have included a list of membranes commonly
used in HPLC along with their distinguishing features.

Glass filter holders

The Millipore® glass filter holder is designed for
aqueous, organic, or corrosive liquids and can be
used for HPLC solvent preparation. The vacuum
connection is integrated into the filter holder base
above the filtrate exit level. This design prevents
unintentional drawing of filtrate into the vacuum
tubing and allows easy transfer of filtrate from the
receiver flask.

Millex® syringe filters for small molecule and protein samples

Hydrophilic PTFE
Protect your results with HPLC-certified Millex® hydrophilic PTFE
syringe filters.
• Millex®-LG and Millex®-LCR filters contain hydrophilic PTFE membranes
and are HPLC-certified for low levels of UV-absorbing extractables.
• Hydrophilic PTFE membranes exhibit low analyte binding and broad
solvent compatibility, enabling filtration of aqueous and organic solvents.

Hydrophobic PTFE Membranes

Broad organic solvent compatibility with hydrophobic PTFE Millex®
syringe filters.
• Millex®-FG and Millex®-FH filters contain hydrophobic PTFE membranes
that are compatible with a broad range of pure organic solvents.
Durapore® PVDF Membranes
Durapore® polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes exhibit extremely
low protein binding and minimal interaction with sample components.
Since they bind less protein per unit surface area compared to nylon, PTFE,
or nitrocellulose membranes, Durapore® filters are used for clarification of
protein-containing solutions.

Best recovery of protein samples with Durapore® PVDF Millex®

• Millex®-GV and Millex®-HV filters contain hydrophilic Durapore® PVDF
membranes which exhibit the lowest protein binding of all Millex®
syringe filters.*

PES Express® Membranes
Fast flow rate for aqueous samples with PES Millipore
Express® Membrane
When filtering large volumes or heavily contaminated solutions, membrane
pores can clog, slowing the filtration rate. For these processes, Millipore
Express® polyethersulfone (PES) membranes offer the largest filtration
capacity. These filters have an asymmetric pore structure: the pores are
larger at the top, where filtration starts. The pore size then decreases from
the top face of the filter to the bottom, where the pore size is small enough
to retain bacteria (0.22 μm). This asymmetric pore design traps large
particles at the top so that they do not clog the tight pores on the retentive
side of the membrane, enhancing the filtration capacity and useful life of
the filter.
