Research Subjects

A.1. Dello

Wendell de Jesus Gatmaitan or also known as Dello is a rapper, battle emcee, and

songwriter. He was born in Tondo, Manila.

Dello was able to make a name for himself when he joined Fliptop in 2010

(Fliptop.com, n.d.). He is part of and is representing the group Skwaterhauz,

Mongol Unit , and VBM. He is also a recording artist at Sony Philippines.

His battle with Target, Batas, and Loonie is now considered a classic of the Fliptop

industry. In his career in Fliptop, he was crowned as the Fliptop Rebuttal King

because of his wits in flipping the challenger’s bars. His comedic timing is

unparalleled with everyone, and his quick wit and ability to control the crowd

helped him earn his title in the arena. His rap styles and genres includes wordplay,

comedy, rebuttal, and freestyle.

Dello also rose to music writing where he was able to produce albums under

Warner Music Philippines, You and Me Mixtape, and Skwaterhauz, Skwat. He also

now appears on TV series.

A.2. Loonie

Marlon Peroramas, aka Loonie, is a Filipino rapper, emcee, songwriter, and

producer. He is also the lead singer for Stick Figgas. Other musical projects include

Barangay Tibay, Konektado, Ron Henley, and Artifice Records (Towerdooms,

2015)

Loonie made his FlipTop debut at the first Second Sight event and quickly

established himself as a top-tier emcee. A few rappers attempted to imitate his

signature multisyllabic rhymes, but he remains the best. His impressive skill set and

charisma propelled him to the top of the global popularity list. Loonie is also

capable of devising clever angles, as evidenced by his battle with Tipsy D at Bwelta

Balentong 3. He then cemented his place among the greats by becoming the

Isabuhay Champion in 2016. Loonie is also still active in music outside of the battle

scene. He released two solo albums as well as two projects with Stick Figgas.

A.3. BLKD

BLKD, read as balakid, is an emcee and an activist from Cavite (Uprising,

n.d.). BLKD first joint the first fliptop tryoit in 2010. Although he was not able to

reach the finals, his performance earned him a spot in the league. He first

introduce the concept of ‘bars’ and it became synonymous to his name, although it

was then existing it was him who made the technical style popular among the

fans. (Fliptop, n.d.).

As mentioned, BLKD is an activist and also uses the platform to express

his grievances towards the government system. His bar styles injects social-

inclined issues without abandoning his opponent. His writing skill extended to

music, and is evident in his critically-acclaimed 2015 album, Gatilyo (Fliptop,

n.d.).
