A Critique on “Anak”

“Anak” is a Filipino film that revolves around a family’s dynamics and struggles. In terms of
the elements of art, the film effectively utilizes color, line, shape, and space to convey the emotions of
the characters and the tone of the story. The use of color is particularly notable, it is used to symbolize
the characters’ moods and the situation, they are in. For example, warm colors like red and orange are
used to depict anger and tension, while cooler colors like blue and green are used to create a calmer and
more peaceful atmosphere. Light is another significant artistic device used in the movie. In "Anak,"
lighting is frequently employed to set the tone and setting. For instance, the lighting is dark and dismal
in the scene where the protagonist is at her lowest, representing melancholy and despair. In contrast,
the lighting is warm and bright at the scene where the main character eventually makes up with her
mother, denoting hope and a better future. Furthermore, the film’s use of line and shape is also
effective in conveying the emotions of the characters. Sharp, angular lines are utilized to convey conflict
and tension, whereas rounded and curved shapes are employed to foster a cozier, more laid-back
environment.

In terms of design concepts, the movie successfully employs balance, contrast, and emphasis
to produce a unified and captivating visual experience. The use of symmetry throughout the movie.
Especially in the framing and shot design, is indicative of its harmony. In contrast to the chaotic and
intensely emotional events of the novel, this conveys a sense of stability and order. Contrast is
additionally employed to highlight significant aspects of the story and generate visual interest. For
instance, the contrast between light and dark is employed to draw attention to the characters' feelings
and the circumstances in which they find themselves. In the scene where the protagonist confronts her
parents, the composition is balanced with the protagonist in the center and her parents on either side.
This creates a sense of tension and conflict, which adds to the impact of the scene. Finally, the movie
makes good use of emphasis to call attention to important scenes and themes. Close-up shots, slow
motion, and other cinematic techniques are used to accomplish this.

In general, "Anak" is a skillfully constructed film that skillfully makes use of the components
of art and design concepts to effectively communicate its message and produce a visually appealing
experience. The film's overall impact and effectiveness are enhanced by the use of color, line, shape,
space, balance, contrast, and emphasis. The movie may fall short in other aspects like narrative
structure, character development, and pacing even while its visual features are great. Yet, it continues
to be a remarkable and memorable movie that highlights the best aspects of Filipino cinema. The
lighting used in "Anak" is effective in creating a specific mood and atmosphere in each scene. The use of
warm colors in the family scenes, for instance, evokes a sense of comfort and intimacy. While the use of
cool colors in the scenes set in Hong Kong highlights the protagonist's loneliness and isolation. The
cinematography in "Anak" is impressive. The film features beautiful and stunning visuals that showcase
the beauty of Hong Kong's urban landscapes. The camera angles used in the movie are also effective in
capturing the emotions and moods of the characters.
