Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 6

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
a. define volcanoes and identify each classification of volcanoes; S6ES-IVb-2
b. answer questions during class discussions;
c. draw volcanoes based on their classification.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Define volcanoes and how are volcanoes classified.
Instructional Materials: Cartolina, marker, pictures, puzzle
Reference: https://www.basicplanet.com/classification-volcanoes/
Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
1. Drill

Good morning, class!

Good morning, teacher.
How are you today?
We’re fine, thank you.
Okay, I am glad to hear that.

May I request everyone to please sit down and

arrange your chairs and pick up some pieces of
papers.
(The students will pick up pieces of paper on
the floor)
This morning we are going to have a short
activity.

Directions: Identify the following. Each

number has a corresponding letter. Use the
number to form the word. (The teacher will call some students who will
A B C D E F G H I J K L M answer in front if ever no one volunteers.)

2. Review

Now, let me ask you.

What was our lesson last meeting?

Cause and hazardous effects of an earthquake,

You are right! teacher.

What are the hazardous effects of an

earthquake? Ground shaking, surface failure, ground
failure, and tsunami.
Very good! Now, we will proceed to our next
lesson.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Motivation

Let’s have a short game.

Now, I will group you into 3 groups. I have
here two envelopes which contain pieces of
pictures that are being cut. All you have to do
is to arrange these pieces of pictures to form a
complete image and paste it on the board. The
first group to finish will be given plus points
later on our other activity.
Do you understand?
Yes, teacher.

(The class will do as what is told.)

2. Presentation of the Lesson

Based on the pictures pasted on the board,

what do you think will be our lesson for today?
I think it’s about volcanoes teacher.
Very good!

Today we will be talking about volcanoes and

how they are classified.

3. Setting of Standard

Now, let me ask you.

What will you do when the teacher is talking in

front?
Listen attentively.
Why do you need to listen attentively?
For us to understand the lesson very well.
Very good!

How about when we are having a group

activity, what will you do?
Cooperate with the members to make the work
easier.
Correct! And please no bullying, be respectful
to everyone.

4. Discussion

Today we will be talking about volcanoes.

When you say volcanoes, what comes to your

mind?
It erupts, teacher.
What else?
Dangerous/ can harm people living in the
nearby area.
Okay.

Volcanoes are openings, or vents where

lava, tephra (small rocks), and steam erupt onto
the Earth's surface. Volcanoes often form a hill
or mountain as layers of rock and ash build-up
from repeated eruptions.

Please read aloud.

Active volcanoes have a recent history (The students will read.)

of eruptions; they are likely to erupt again.

What do you mean by erupt?

It means it will explode, teacher.
Correct!
The word active means there is still an action
or a movement which only means anytime they
can erupt again despite erupting just recently.

Dormant volcanoes have not erupted for a

very long time but may erupt at a future time.
(The students will read.)
Volcanoes go dormant because magma from
the Earth's mantle can no longer reach the
volcano.
Extinct volcanoes are considered dead and are
not expected to ever erupt again.

TYPE CLASSIFICATION (The students will read.)

Volcanoes can also be classified by type. The
structure and composition determine a
volcano’s type.

(The teacher will add more information

during the discussion)
Shield volcanoes are low, dome-shaped
mountains shaped by lava that flows easily and
covers a large area.

Cinder cone volcanoes are the simplest form;

they erupt from a single vent and usually have
a bowl-shaped crater at the summit.

Composite or stratovolcanoes are the most

common type; they are tall mountains with
steep sides, having alternating internal layers
of rock and magma.

Lava domes are formed by viscous magma

being erupted effusively onto the surface and
then piling up around the vent.

TWO BASIC CLASSIFICATIONS OF

VOLCANOES
Based on the type of eruption they produce:
explosive (or central) and quiet (or fissure).

Explosive eruptions are caused by the buildup

of gasses under highly viscous (thick and slow-
flowing) magma trapped deep within the
volcano.

Quiet eruptions usually emit great volumes of

lava along a long fissure or fracture.

Examples of Volcanoes with different

classifications.

Mayon Volcano, Albay

- Highly active.
- composite/stratovolcano.
- Last erupted in the year 2018.
Parícutin Volcano, Mexico
- Dormant
- Cinder cone
- The volcano has been dormant since the
last eruption in 1952.

Mount Thielsen or Big Cowhorn, Oregon

High Cascades
- Extinct
- Shield volcano
- last erupted 250,000 years ago.

5. Application (Groupwork)
Integrating Arts

The teacher will group the class into four (4)

Group 1- Draw the classification of volcanoes

✓ Active
✓ Dormant
✓ Extinct

Group 2- Draw the classification of volcanoes

based on types.
✓ Shield volcanoes
✓ Cinder cone volcanoes
✓ Composite/stratovolcanoes
✓ Lava domes

Group 3- A brief report about the classification

of volcanoes

Group 4- A brief report about the classification

based on types.

Present to the class your finished work.

6. Generalization

What do you mean by volcanoes?

Volcanoes are openings, or vents where
lava, tephra (small rocks), and steam erupt onto
the Earth's surface.
What is the classification of volcanoes?
Active, dormant, and extinct.
What are the four classifications based on
types?
Shield volcanoes, Cinder cone volcanoes,
Composite or stratovolcanoes, and Lava
domes.

volcanoes?
