“Initial Damage Assessment and Damage Control”

Learning Outcomes Exercises 1.5: (45 points)

1, Enumerate Three (3) procedures how to determine the damage of own ship following the incident
such as collision, fire, explosion, grounding, severe storm and etc. and explain (15 pts)

1. Assess the damage- send an officer responsible to the area of the damage or the area where the
vessel have taken the damage, The officer responsible will assess the damage and report it to
the master, In this, the master decides on what decision to make and if he is incapable of
making decision the next person in line of command will do so.
2. Take immediate action in case of damage- if there are damages caused, immediate actions must
be made in order to avoid the damage from escalating. For example, when there is an ingress of
water caused by the damage, necessary arrangements must be made to pump out the water
and avoid flooding and if the water cannot be pumped out, the whole compartment must be
sealed in order to avoid other compartments from being flooded.
3. Take the soundings- a crew will take the sounding of all ballast tank, fresh water tank and wing
tank. Also, the engine room must also take soundings of all tanks in engine room. Record the
sounding of all tanks and compare it to the previous data to know if there is a crack or a hole in
the tank.

2. Determine damage control of own ship after an emergency situation occurred

The damage control of a ship is used for the sole purpose of keeping the ship afloat and to
return to port for preparation with minimal loss of property or life. The necessity for the practice of
damage control aboard ship is not limited to just plugging and patching holes in the hull plating because
a damage or accident aboard ship needs a systematic response by the professional mariners.

3. Explain, why that the continuous watch should be kept on the damaged area and temporary repair

Continuous watch should be kept on the damage area because the damage can result to bigger
problem when not taken off properly especially when the damage has only been given temporary repair.
The temporary repair can give up and the ingress of water unto the ship may happen. Thus, continuous
monitoring of the damaged area to ensure that the damage will not become worst or escalate to
another problem.

4. Explain analysis of accident damage of structure

Analysis of accident damage of structure is the analysis of the damage of the ship on its
structure. For example, during collision, compartments and the structure of the ship may be affected
due to the collision. In this the structure of the ships I checked if there are cracks or holes that have
been made. It is to ensure that the structure of the ship will not give up or break due to the accident.

5. State the purpose of damage assessment and control

Damage assessment can help identify the extent of the damage and to assess what action to
take to avoid the damage from further spreading or causing bigger harm. Damage assessment provide
situational assessment and to identify the scope and severity of the damage. Damage control is
important. This is to ensure that the damage will not affect other parts of the ship and will not escalate.
In this, actions like closing the compartment completely is made to avoid flooding to other
compartments.

6. Define Damage Assessment and explain

Damage assessment is used to assess the damage and to identify the actions to take in order to
minimize the problem. It must be through where the extent of the damage, cause of the damage and
other compartments that can be affected are identified. Also, it must be conducted with caution
because the damaged part is a dangerous area where escalation of the problem may arise.

7. Explain the grounds of damage assessment and control

Damage control aboard the ship is used to keep the ship floating and avoid it from sinking. It is
also used to avoid the situation of taking loss or property or life. It helps in minimizing the damages
caused by the accident. This damage assessment and control is made systematically and in the best way
possible to avoid further damage and avoid worst case scenarios like massive oil spill or loss of life.
Damage control objectives are attained by taking necessary action to do the following: Preserve Stability
and Preserve watertight integrity.
