Lesson: On the move
Topic: ways of expressing futurity (“be going to” future, future simple, present tense
continuous)
Methods: conversation, explanation, dialogue, exercise, pairwork
Skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking
Teaching aids: blackboard, handouts, textbook, notebook

Lesson aims: By the end of the lesson, the students will have had an oral and written practice in
using different ways of expressing futurity appropriately, that is “be going to” future, future
simple and present tense continuous.

Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. revise the means of expressing futurity (“be going to” future, future simple, present tense
continuous) and their structure;
2. speak about future actions, plans and intentions for the future;
3. make predictions about the future;
4. express themselves freely and make sentences of their own.

Assumptions: In terms of vocabulary students must be familiar with the language register. They
will be able to translate a joke. The students must have some appetite for expressing personal
opinions in productions of their own using future forms correctly.

Anticipated Problems: The use of mother tongue in workgroup, lack of imagination, some
difficulties in expressing orally and in choosing the correct future forms in some given exercises.
Activity 1:- Warm-up
Aims: - to warm up the class atmosphere;
- to get students to relax and to get ready for the lesson.
Procedure: Teacher tries to create a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere by means of routine
conversation: (Who’s on duty today? Who’s absent? How are you today?).
Methods: Conversation

Activity 2: Lead in- questions and answers


Aim: to introduce the new topic to the students; the students will be able to anticipate the content
of the text.

Procedure: The students have to read a joke from page 45 in their workbooks and underline the
verb forms that refer to the future. The teacher writes the verbs on the blackboard and asks the
students to remember and say what the difference between them is. The students answer the
teacher`s questions and write down some notes at the same time.

Activity 3: Grammar questions


Aim: -to make students aware of the difference between will and going to to express a future
intention.
Procedure: The students are asked to read a dialogue between a husband, John and a wife, Anna
and explain why John uses different future forms in the conversation he has with his wife. While
trying to remember the correct answers, the students are taking notes on the subject. The teacher
tries to add some new things to what they have already learned.

Activity 4: Practice (handout)


Aim:- to make students practice the remembered information about the different ways of
expressing futurity.
Procedure: The teacher gives her students some handouts containing exercises in which they
have to complete some dialogues using a form of will or going to. In the next exercise, they will
have to look at some pictures and write questions and answers using going to. The third exercise
contains ten verbs the students have to complete one conversation with by putting them into the
present tense continuous and the last one contains pairs of responses, one verb form being right
and the other one being wrong. Depending on their choice, the students have to put a tick for the
correct response and an X for the wrong one. The teacher corrects the students if necessary.

Activity 5: Oral activity (fortune-telling)


Aim: -to make students practice the use of the future simple
Procedure: the students have to work in pairs and tell each other his/her fortune by looking at
his/her palm.

Time: 5 min.

Activity 6: Writing activity


Aim:-to make the students practice the use of the be going to future
Procedure: The students will have to write in their notebooks what they are going to do each
day next week.

Evaluation: written evaluation

Time: 5 min.

Activity 7: Feed-back and homework.

Procedure: The teacher gives students the homework for next time- exercises 3 and 4 in the
given handout.

Time: 2 min.
