You will hear part of a news radio programme in which Adam Norton, the presenter, will be sharing
an interesting piece of news. Listen to him and complete the gaps with the word(s) you hear. Look at

Hello everybody. Thanks for tuning in. I'm Adam Norton. Today we'll be sharing a piece of news about an
international day which was celebrated yesterday. Do you know what is celebrated worldwide on 13th
August? Tell me, are you left-handed? If so, you should know that only about one out of 10 people on Earth
are just like you. In fact, International Left-Handers Day is on August 13, and it’s time for all who are left-hand-
dominant to celebrate. International Left-Handers Day was created in 1976 by Dean Campbell, founder of the
Lefthanders International. The medical term for left-handedness is sinistrality. It turns out that there's a day
to celebrate this so as to create awareness of the advantages and disadvantages left-handers face in a right-
hand designed world.

It is a fact that there are many famous people who are left-handed. There are celebrities, world leaders,
sportspeople and so on. And some big names from the past were left-handed too! I mean, left-handers have
actually guided towns, states, and even large nations over history. For instance, about 2,000 years ago, Julius
Caesar led the Roman Empire with his left. He was the most powerful person in the world at that time. Then
in the early 1400s, a young woman named Joan of Arc led a French army in a big battle in Orléans, France.
She got the surprise win in a war against England! And eight U.S. presidents have been left-handed, such as
Barack Obama, the 44th leader of the United States.

Then, from starring in movies to taking over the stage, more than a handful of performers have been left-
handed. That includes one of the best-selling musicians of all time: Paul McCartney! He was one of the four
members of the Beatles, singing and strumming the bass guitar with his left hand. Also, lefty actress Zoe
Saldana has starred in some of the most successful movies ever! Those include the Guardians of the
Galaxy films and Avatar. And don’t forget about singer Justin Bieber. The left-handed pop star has sold about
150 million records throughout his career! And there's also Angelina Jolie. The stunning actress is left-handed
too.
Many storytellers have left their marks on the world with their left hands. Those include my personal favourite
author – the one and only Mark Twain. His books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn are still popular today, even more than 100 years after Twain’s death. Another left-handed
storyteller was writing at about the same time as Twain. That’s Lewis Carroll, who wrote Alice’s Adventures
in Wonderland!

In the field of sports, lots of left-handed champs have risen to the top of the sports world. Take Babe Ruth —
one of the greatest baseball players ever! He hit 714 homers in his career, a record that stood for nearly 40
years. He also won the World Series seven times with the Red Sox and Yankees. Another lefty sports star

has even more championships. NBA player Bill Russell won 11 titles, eight of them in a row! Still, both of
those athletes can’t touch left-handed tennis titan Martina Navratilova. She earned 18 major singles titles!

Back to you now! Contact us and let us know if you are left-handed and if you've ever encountered any
difficulties to adapt to the world we live in because you use your left hand.
