When Coopertative Learning Works

1. Flexible Classrooms significantly improve students’ engagement and learning because

children feel they can control the way they absorb knowledge and develop skills. Also, Flexible

Classrooms ensure a comfortable learning environment that fits the needs of students.

Importantly, students’ engagement and learning are improved because children feel empowered

as they have a choice of how to work and with whom to work.

2. The idea I like about these classrooms is that Flexible Classrooms is a world full of

choice, which is a basis for an effective educational approach. Flexible Classrooms help not only

develop a positive attitude to learning but also give a sense of belonging at school, which in turn

improves their motivation, curiosity, and learning outcomes.

3. Becky Fisher emphasizes the importance of collaborative learning. The teacher argues that

it is impossible to create and maintain a collaborative learning environment when students are

isolated in “rows,” and they feel like they are separate “islands.”

4. The classroom setting of single rows, setting one child behind the other, and no contact

deprives students of the opportunity to interact with each other, which is the foundation for

developing social skills essential for children to build healthy social relationships. Moreover, the

classroom setting of single rows, setting one child behind the other, prevents students from being

flexible and having freedom of choice. It is worth noting that, unlike Flexible Classrooms,

traditional classrooms make children feel isolated, thus giving them no space for self-exploration

and self-development.

5. An opportunity to work in small collaborative groups and, at the same time, to work

individually is the thing I like the most about “flexible classrooms.” Giving alternatives to

students on how they want to learn, develop new skills, and build relationships with peers is

crucial. I like that “flexible classrooms” lay the groundwork for respecting the opinions of others

and encouraging group work.
