LAB# 1 Insect Net and Killing Jar Making

A. INTRODUCTION
Insect net
A butterfly net sometimes called an aerial insect net) is one of several kinds of nets used to
collect . The entire bag of the net is generally constructed from a lightweight mesh to minimize
damage to delicate butterfly wings.

Killing jar
A Killing jar (or killing bottle) is a device used by entomologists to kill in captured insects
quickly and with minimum damage. The jar, typically glass, must be hermetically sealable and
one design has a thin layer of hardened plaster of Paris on the bottom to absorb the killing
agent.
B. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the activity student or learner will be able to
 Making a insect net the basic thing is to keep insects and pests away from the crop and
these nets are the perfect way to do it.
 Create killing jar are used as a sort of “small scale fumigation” to kill collected insects as
rapidly as possible, using a liquid or killing agent (ethyl acetate/nail polish remover).
 Do the activity either inside the campus , backyard of the house, and look in other
places near or far.
C. METHODOLOGY
1. Materials:
Insects Net
 PVC- ½ (1meter)
 Muslin Cloth -1/4m
 Wire
 Thread and needle
Killing Jar
 Pin of head
 Clean jar w/ big mouth
 Cyanide
 Card board
 Scissors
2. Methods:
A combination of aerial and sweep nets are also commonly used, with the majority of the
net bags being made of heavier cloth and approximately the apical made of fine mesh
material.
Killing jar
Killing jar can be made simply by adding a few strips or cut in a circle of paper to a jar and
then adding a few powder mothball .

D. DISCUSSION

In my observation of creating insect net and killing jar, nets used to collect insects and
arthropods fall into three general categories; aerial nets, sweep nets and aquatic net. The
purpose of nets bugs they are most useful for catching select insects that may be flying
through the air or perched on something (such as dragonflies, butterflies, bees, or wasps). In a
parasites, predators, parasitoid and also hosts that species groups. For the jar or killing jar
creation should be keep jar tightly capped when not in use to extend the effectiveness of the
cyanide or mothball poison jar and they die in a minutes, hour, day or next day, easily handle
or carry and quickly materials and methods in the making.
