Subject: Request to make uniforms compulsory for students

Dear Mr. Principal,

As you are aware our school council is currently making an important decision about student
uniforms and they have asked for our opinions. Since the final decision rests with you, I am writing
this letter to convince you that school uniforms should be made compulsory at our school.

Firstly, I strongly believe (emotive language) that compulsory uniforms can protect us (personal
pronoun) students from pressure - emotional pressure, which happens when we get bullied, or
financial pressure (repetition) when we try to keep up with all the latest fashions. By wearing
uniforms, we are reducing any chance of some nasty, cruel bully teasing us about our clothing.
(emotive language) At school, with no uniform policy, there is a lot of pressure on us teenagers to
wear something fashionable, wear something branded, and wear something (repetition/rule of
three) different every day. Most of the students cannot afford to wear only branded clothes all the
time. Trying to keep up with fashions that change every day is also a pressure that most of us
students do not need. For this reason, I think, it would benefit each and every one of us to have a
compulsory uniform.

Secondly, I want to highlight that school uniforms can actually help students to become happier and
more successful people. A 2010 study by a London-based university (facts/statistics) showed that
schools that enforce a compulsory uniform have less bullying and that their students spend 25%
more time on their learning (facts/statistics) during the school day. Can you imagine how this extra
time will mean they will get better marks? (Rhetorical question) I am sure that wearing uniforms
would lift our level of concentration, lengthen our learning time, and ultimately impact and improve
our achievement in school. (alliteration)

Lastly, the study also showed that students who wore a uniform felt a stronger connection and
camaraderie with their school community.(alliteration) If our school was to adopt a compulsory
uniform policy, then students will feel like they belong and will end up taking pride in their school
and their learning. This will end up improving our school’s reputation, which means that any student
who wears our school’s uniform will be respected by people in the community.

Please consider the points I have raised in this letter carefully and pass the decision to make cost-
effective, practical, and achievement-boosting (rule of three) school uniforms compulsory. Please let
the students enjoy the happiness that comes from belonging to a community and being able to get
on with their learning and succeed. My fellow students and I look forward to hearing your response.

Yours sincerely,
