I n G reat Britai n , BS 7570: 1 992, Code of practice for the validation of arc welding equipment,
was pu bl ish ed and it becam e th e eq ui val en t European pre-stand ard EN V 501 84: 1 996
(withdrawn).

The revised secon d ed iti on of BS 7570 was publi shed i n 2000 an d was l ater replaced by th e
eq u ival ent EN 50504: 2008.

8 Wire feeder
8.1 General

8.2 Requirements for VERIFICATION


The fol l owi ng two basic types of wire feeders are used in weld i ng :
a) wire feed ers for consu m able el ectrode processes, e. g. MI G wel d i ng, su bm erg ed arc
weld in g;
b) wire feed ers for add itional fi ll er wire, e. g. col d wi re TI G wel di n g, h ot wi re TI G weld i n g.
The type of wire feed er affects the VERI FI CATI ON requ irem en ts.

I n som e cases th e speed con trol m ay be scal ed with arbi trary u n i ts an d th e wire feed er fitted
wi th a wi re feed speed m eter. I n th is case th e m eter sh al l be cal ibrated .

Som e M I G wel d i ng wi re feed ers m ay be in terl ocked with th e power source preven tin g n orm al
wire feed operation with ou t an arc. I f th e interlock can n ot be overrid d en then th e power
source sh all be en ergi zed wi th an arc to verify the wire feeder.

8.3 Method
Startin g wi th the m in im um output setti ng , energize and stabil i ze the wire feed er and th en take
a read i n g. Repeat th is proced ure for each of th e m easurem ent poi nts u p to th e m axim um .

The fol l owing m eth ods m ay be used :

waveform characteristics such as ram ps an d pu lses depend on th e (m ostl y with q u artz
precision) cl ock frequ ency of th e processor. An error in clock g en eration wi l l i n gen eral lead to
a com pl ete fai lu re of th e con trol or oth er m alfu ncti ons an d wi ll be recogn ized by th e user.
Therefore, i t is n ot n ecessary to verify ram p and pu lse sh apes for such con trols.

I f a wel d i ng power source has an anal og con trol, wh ere tim es are, for exam ple, generated by
resistors or capaci tors, valu es m ay slowl y ch ang e i n th e course of tim e. Such con trols m ay
req u ire bei n g regu larl y verifi ed .

Slope an d pulse con trols are consid ered to be PRECI SI ON G RADE an d the VERI FI CATI ON
