Tutorial 8

Question 1
Conversion of single-phase 60 Hz voltage to single-phase 30 Hz current by integral
cycle control.

Switch #1 is on for one full period of Vin(t), then it will turn off for one full period,
and so on.
(a) Plot the switching function of switch 1, q1(t)
(b) Write the Fourier series of q1(t). What is the value of the phase in degrees?
(c) Does the switching function provide the desired conversion? If not, plot one
that does.

Question 2
Distortion of the voltage waveform. As the sinusoidal voltage increases above half its
peak value, in either a positive or negative direction, a square pulse 20 V high and 100
s wide appears to be added on. The waveform without the pulse is 340cos(100t) V.
What are the THD and THR of this voltage waveform?

Question 3
A dc-dc converter. The input voltage is in the range 10 V to 15 V. The output required
is exactly 10.2 V. The power level is 20 W. Isolation is recommended. The switching
frequency 150 kHz. Draw a circuit that can perform the desired function. What duty
ratio is needed for 10.2 V output. Choose inductor and capacitor values to limit the
output ripple to 80 mV peak-to-peak.

Question 4

A dc-dc converter with the following specifications:

Input voltage range: +8 V to +18 V
Output average voltage: +24 V
Output voltage ripple: 0.06 V maximum at rated load
Rated load: 300 W, resistive
Input current ripple: 250 mA maximum at rated load
Switching frequency: 100 kHz
Common ground between input and output.

(a) Draw a circuit, which can perform this function.

(b) What is the necessary range of duty ratio for each switch?
(c) Find circuit part values (R,L, and C) which will meet the stated specifications.

Question 5
A six-phase midpoint rectifier operates from sources with line-to-neutral voltage of
190 VRMS at 50 Hz. The load is a series R-L combination that draws 40 kW at 200 V.
What inductor will be needed to keep the output ripple below 5%? With this
inductor, what is the output power of this converter as a function of ?
