Tutorial 2

Problem 1

There is a voltage-source input vin at 50 Hz, an ac current source output, and

switching takes place at 80 Hz. The duty ratio is 1/2. Plot the output waveform and
find its frequency.

Problem 2
Any of the five possible restricted switches can be constructed from combinations of
bipolar transistors and diodes. See if you can design ways to assemble each of the
switch types solely from diode and transistor combinations.

Problem 3
Consider a linear regulated dc power supply. The instantaneous input voltage
corresponds to the lowest waveform, where Vd,min = 20 V and Vd,max = 30 V.
Approximate this waveform by a triangular wave consisting of two linear segments
between the above two values. Let V0 = 15 V and assume that the load is constant.
Calculate the energy efficiency due to losses in the transistor.

Problem 4
A converter has a single ac voltage input, of amplitude Vin, and two switches. When
switch 1 is on, the input and output are connected. When switch 2 is on, the output is
shorted. The switches operate so q1 + q2 = 1.
(a) Draw this circuit.
(b) The frequency of the input is 60 Hz, the peak value of the input voltage is V0,
and the frequency of q1 is 10 kHz. The output average power is Pave. What is
the amplitude of the 60 Hz Fourier component of the input current?

Problem 5
What is the THD of a switching function with duty ratio D, assuming that the dc
component is removed by filtering.

Problem 6
A 12 V power supply is tested, and found to have average output of 12.15 V with no
load and 11.98 V with rated load. What is the load regulation, expressed in
conventional terms?

Problem 7

A dc-dc converter produces a 5 V supply with 2% line regulation. The output is

connected to the load without sense lines, through an 0.004  resistor. What is the
expected total regulation (line plus load) over the full allowed input range and an
output range of 10 W to 100 W?
