Investigations of the past and recent damages to reinforced concrete

structures under extreme earthquakes have demonstrated a significant
contribution of the pounding phenomenon between adjacent structures.
Seismic pounding occurs when the partition gap between the adjacent
buildings is not wide enough, particularly during major earthquake events.
