Experiment

Title: Osmosis

Aim: To observe osmosis taking place in living tissue

Apparatus/Materials:
knife, 2 containers/cups, salt, spoon, measuring cup, ruler, paper, pen/marker, timer,
potato/cucumber, water

Method: (omit from write up)

1. Fill the 2 containers with equal amounts of water (approximately ¼ to ½ cup)
2. Label the first container A and the second, B
3. Next, cut 2 pieces of potato/cucumber 2cm x 2cm x 2cm
4. Add one teaspoon of salt to the container labeled B.
5. Place one piece in the container labeled A and the other in the container labeled B at
the same time.
6. Begin timing your experiment.
7. Leave the potato/cucumber pieces soaking for 1hour.
8. Remove each sample from the solutions, measure each side and observe their textures.
9. Record all observations.

Observations:

Draw a suitable table of your results.

Tables must be bound by four sides, have labeled columns and include a title in capital letters
at the top. (4 mks)

Discussion:

Answer the following:

1. Describe the type of solution used in container A of the experiment. (2mks)
2. With reference to the movement of water, explain what took place after 1 hour and
say why this occurred. (4 mks)
3. What term can be used to describe the condition of the potato/cucumber cells?(1 mk)
4. Describe the type of solution used in container B of the experiment. (2mks)
5. With reference to the movement of water, explain what took place after 1 hour and
say why this occurred. (4 mks)
6. What term can be used to describe the condition of the cucumber/potato cells?(1 mk)

Conclusion:
In one sentence, what can you conclude happened as a result of this experiment? (1 mk)

(If the format of this experiment is correct - 1mk)
