FORMAL SEARCH FOR KNOWLEDGE AT ATENEO MUNICIPAL

 entered ATENEO MUNICIPAL when he was 11 years old (4 mons. After execution of GOMBURZA)
 not in COLEGIO DE SAN JOSE it was because of unhappy experience of his brother.
 ATENEO MUNICIPAL or ESCUELA PIA (rival of LETRAN)

ENROLLMENT AT ATENEO

 Paciano accompanied Rizal to the entrance examination at Letran on June 10, 1872
 he passed the exam but refused because of two reasons: being a late registrant, very frail and
undersized for his age.
 Father Magin Fernando (denying his admission) but due to the intervention of Manuel Burgos,
the college registrar finally admitted Rizal.
 he did not use Mercado, but Rizal his orig. surname had rung a bell to the ears of the authorities
then due to Paciano’s association with of the leaders of the secularization moment, Father
Burgos.

THE ATENEON SYSTEM OF EDUCATION

 Ateneo offered six-year program that entitled a student to the academic title, Bachiller en
Artes.
 the academic program exposed student in five learning areas:
christian doctrine
language – spanish, latin, greek, and french
history and geography – world history and geography and history of spain and the ph
mathematics and sciences – arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry, mineralogy, chemistry,
physics. botany, and zoology
classic disciplines – poetry, rhetoric, and philosophy

vocational courses: agriculture, commerce, mechanics, and surveying

 Ateneo, the best secondary education for boys. trained student character through rigid and
religious instruction.
 two competing empires: the Roman – boarding students at Ateneo
the Carthaginians – non-boarding students
 both empires had ranks and dignitaries: emperor (best scholar)
tribune, decurion, centurion, standard bearer
 he became emperor, brightest in the class.
 ratio studiorum (method of instruction was subjected to Ateneo)
- a system of indoctrination under tight and constant discipline with every
incentive of compensation and reward (combined memory and understanding)
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AT ATENEO

 studied from 1872 to 1877.


 commendable academic performance as a secondary student (excellent)
 passed oral exam on March 14, 1877. graduated with a degree, bachiller en artes, with
highest academic honor.
 academic triumph, 3 factors: racial pride, monastic discipline, and
seclusion of boarding school life

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AT ATENEO


 member then became officer in the religious confraternities at Ateneo-Solidality of Our
Lady; and Apostleship of Prayers.
 he joined the Academy of Spanish Literature and the Academy of Natural Sciences.
 Father Francisco Paula de Sanchez (developed his skills in writing poetry)
 Convent School of Santa Isabel (develop proficiency in spanish)
 Agustine Saez (sharpen his skills in painting)
 Romualdo de Jesu (sculpture) because of him, Rizal was able to carve the image of the Virgin
Mary and Scared Heart of Jesus.
