History and Scope of Consultancy
History and Scope of Consultancy
Some documents specify that the first consultancy was carried out in 1870. Charles T.
Sampson was hired in a decadent United States to reorganize the work of Chinese
workers in a shoe factory. However, consultancy formally arises at the beginning of the
Industrial Revolution. It is during the 19th century, at the height of the Industrial
Revolution, that the scientific organization of work begins.
A study carried out by Frederick W. Taylor (Philadelphia, USA 1856-1915), tried to solve
the problems of efficiency in the work methods used in the production lines of the
haulage yards of the Bethlem Steel Company, beginning thus what would be known as
scientific management (Lavin, 2016).
With the boom and economic growth of countries such as the United States of America
and European countries, companies gradually developed their own project departments
with very competitive salaries. The evolution was logical and natural, since it was better
to have personnel developing continuous improvements in the companies, although the
cost of salaries was onerous in the long run. It was very difficult for a single consultant
or advisor to be able to develop continuous improvements in a single company for a
long time.
