BASIC INFORMATION COMPOSERS

The Modern period of music is Claude Debussy


from ca. 1900 to now, which Ruth Crawford Seeger
includes the 20th and 21st Igor Stravinsky
centuries. There are many small Arnold Schoenberg
periods in this era, including Amy Beach
the Impressionist and the
Expressionist eras. The
advancements of technology
allowed for different types of
FAMOUS PIECES
music and new ways of
listening. Debussy's "Clair de Lune"
Seeger's "String Quartet, 1931"
Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring"
Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire"
Beach's "Sketches" op. 15

The Impressionist
movement explores mood
through timbre (quality of
the sound) and
orchestration.
The Expressionist
movement allows the
musician to represent
personal emotions in a
piece rather than an
CHARACTERISTICS actual object.

1. Atonality:
a. Similar to dissonance,
atonal music does not
sound "pretty" and uses
unresolved chords and
lacks tonal centres.
2. Repetition & Symmetry:
a. Bigger use of rhythmic
repetition and symmetry
as a form.
