Identification of the confined space to be done by checking whether the
worker can enter fully and perform assigned work. The permit system for the confined space must be maintained. The entry and exit to the confined space must be clear and free from obstacles. An attendant should be present outside the entry of the confined space and a lifeline is attached to the working personnel such that in case of emergency the attendant pulls him out. The atmosphere in a confined space must be checked for oxygen levels, flammable and explosive concentrations and toxic levels of gases and liquids containing chemicals. The confined space must be checked for physical hazards like temperature, noise, wet surfaces and falling objects. The atmosphere testing in confined space must be done at various regions as some of the gases settle down due to density and some hold up as they are lighter than air. Ventilation must be provided to the confined space either by natural means or by providing local exhaust ventilation. To remove heavier gases air is pumped to the confined space for dilution and then removed by using ventilation. Air purifying respirators and air supplying respirators containing SCBA must be used wherever necessary. Isolation of energy sources, restriction of flow of fluids must be done by using LOTO system. The confined space must be barricaded to prevent unauthorized entry. Confined space shall be provided with illumination not less than 50 lx and temporary lighting (below 24v) must be guarded to prevent accidental damage and they must be protected by an ELCB. The hazards are to be monitored periodically as there is a chance the atmospheric and working conditions will be changing. Rescue operations are to be well planned by making a first aider available and providing an emergency transport facility.
In case of emergency, follow the site emergency plan.
