is an opinion, and which is a statement of
assertion? Anyone?
Yes, John. (Students’ answer may vary.)

Why do you think it’s an opinion?

Excellent John! That’s right statement one is an

example of an opinion.
It is a statement that involves the speaker’s idea
and cannot be proven.

What do you think are the signal words used in

the sentence that gives a hint that it is an opinion?

Yes, that’s right the signal words used in the

sentence that gives a hint that it is an opinion are
the words “I think”.
(Students read the examples.)
How about the statement two? It is an_______?

Why can you say it’s an assertion?

It is an assertion because the statement is

somewhat true and somewhat false.

Let us now differentiate opinion from assertion.

Opinion is a form of creative writing that

expresses someone's personal thoughts or feelings
about something.
It isn't necessarily based on facts. It cannot be
proven as true.

Let us try to look at these examples: (Students’ answers may vary.)

Okay who wants to read the examples?

1. Chocolate ice cream is the best flavor of ice

cream sold.
2. Ice cream sundaes should always come with a
cherry on top.
3. I think my outlook in life was changed by the
pandemic.

Keep in Mind
• Statements of opinion usually start with signal
phrases such as I think or I believe and have
words like best, worst, beautiful, outstanding or
should.
• Statements of opinion have to do with one’s
preferences or emotions

Who can give me an opinion about the picture

being presented?

(Students’ answers may vary.)

On the other hand, a statement that is somewhat
true and somewhat false is called assertion. An
assertion may be somewhat similar to opinion
(that is, a belief of someone) but it can be proven
as true or false. It is a declaration of the person’s
belief and may be proven as true or false.
Yes/No ma’am.
Here are some examples: Yes/No ma’am.
