Data Communication System (DCS) Engineer

The Data Communication System (DCS) supports the communications between the different
Automatic Train Control Supervision components located at Central Control, Wayside and On-
Board Trains. The communication between different subsystems can be through wired media
(copper or fibre optics e.g. between stations and control centre) or wireless (between trains
and wayside units).

DCS Engineers are responsible for implementing, monitoring and managing the communications between
the different Automatic Train Control Supervision components located at Central Control, Wayside and
On-Board Trains. The role can include support in designing system configurations, documenting and
managing the installation of a new network, and maintaining and upgrading existing systems as
necessary.

Responsibilities

 Provide expert technical support skills, to improve operational performance and productivity.
 Undertake independent investigations and produce reports and recommendations.
 Assist in developing and implementation of cross departmental self help initiatives in order to
enhance technical skill levels and improve efficiency.
 Identify innovative techniques and exploit new systems, technology to improve working practices.
 Undertake technical audits/investigations and produce reports and provide recommendations.
 Implement action plans to address recommendations derived from analytical data.
 Provide technical advice on new bids and re-negotiation of existing contracts.
 Responsible for handling all technical problems in running projects and devices under
maintenance, achieving customer acceptance / satisfaction through high performance and quality
of services.
 Responsible for supporting PM and have a good technical interaction with customer, good
Customer Relationship with peers in Customer department.
 Responsible to support the implementation manager to control the quality of the project.
 Responsible for establish a maintenance routine and able to timely handle customer technical
problem, product related changes, product issues and correction releases.
 Products/Technical Knowledge update through self learning techniques, to meet upcoming
service requirements.

Experience:

The post holder is likely to have had at least 5 years relevant experience in Operational Communications
and/or Signalling Systems.

Holding a degree and having a technical background will be required to gain a DCS Engineer role.
Degrees in the following subjects can be included:

 Computer science
 Computer software/computer systems engineering
 Computer systems and networks
 Electrical/electronic engineering
 Network security management
