1.1 Product Overview

1.1.1 ZTE Distributed eNodeB Solution

ZTE develops and promotes BBU (baseband unit) +RRU (remote

RF unit) distributed eNodeB solution, in which BBU and RRU work
together to perform the LTE eNodeB service.
ZTE's LTE BBU+RRU distributed eNodeB solution has the following
features:
1. Saving labor cost and engineering cost for networking.
BBU+RRU distributed eNodeB equipment is small in size, light
in weight, and easy for transportation and engineering con-
struction.
2. Fast networking, saving the fees of renting equipment room.
BBU+RRU distributed eNodeB is applicable to various sites,
such as mounted on the steel tower, on the building top, or
on the wall, etc. The installation site is very flexible, not re-
stricted by the space of the equipment room. It can help the
operators deploy network rapidly, and exert the predominance
of Time-To-Market. It can also save the fees of renting equip-
ment room and the network operation cost.
3. Convenient in upgrade and capacity expansion; saving the ini-
tial stage cost of the network.
RRU can be mounted as close to the antenna as possible, which
saves the cost of feeder cable and decreases the wastage of
feeder cable. It also enhances the output power of RRU top
and increase the coverage.
4. Low power consumption, power-saving.
Compared with the traditional eNodeB, BBU+RRU distributed
eNodeB has lower power consumption, which greatly reduces

Chapter 1 System Descriptions

the investment and cost in electric power, and saves the net-
work operation cost.
5. Distributed networking, making good use of the network re-
sources.
Supporting star or chain networking mode between BBU and
RRU.
6. Adopting more perspective generalized eNodeB platform.
BBU adopts the platform designed for the future 3G and 4G.
One hardware platform can realize different standard modes,
and several standard modes can coexist in one eNodeB. In this
way, the operators' management is simplified, and several eN-
odeBs to be invested can be integrated into one eNodeB (mul-
timode eNodeB). The operators can select the evolution direc-
tion of the future network more flexibly, and the end users can
also feel the network transparency and evolution smoothness.

1.1.2 Location in Network

ZXSDR B8200 TL200 implements the function of eNodeB's base-

band unit, and works with the RF unit (RRU) to form a complete
eNobeB via the baseband-RF interface.
ZXSDR B8200 TL200 and is connected with EPC via S1 interface,
and is connected with other eNodeBs via X2 interface.
The location of the ZXSDR B8200 TL200 BBU in LTE network is
shown in Figure 1.

layer).
Platform software provides the functions of OSS, OAM, DBS, BRS
and SCS.
OSS (Operation Support Sub-system) is the support layer in
this entire framework, which is a hardware-independent plat-
form for running software and provides basic functions like
scheduling, timer, memory management, communication, se-
quencing control, monitoring, alarming and logging.
OAM (Operating And Maintenance) provides the configuration,
alarm and performance measurement function for eNodeB.
DBS (Data Base Sub-system) is the database system.
BRS (Bearer Sub-system) provides the IP communication func-
tion for inter-boards and inter-network elements.
SCS (System Control Sub-system) provides the power control
and system management function.
DSP and CPU were adopted in the hardware layer.

1.3 Interfaces and Protocols

1.3.1 S1 Interface

S1 interface is defined as the interface between E-UTRAN and EPC.

The main functions of S1 interface are listed as follows:
 S-GW bearer service management
UE mobility management under LTE_ACTIVE status
 Paging
 NAS signaling transmission
 S1 interface management
 Network information sharing
 Supporting roaming restricted area management
 NAS node selection
 Initial context creation
S1 interface includes two parts: S1-C interface of the control
plane, and S1-U interface of the user plane.
S1-C interface is defined as the interface between eNodeB and
MME, S1-U interface is defined as the interface between eNodeB
and S-GW gateway.
S1 interface control plane S1–C is shown in Figure 6.

Chapter 1 System Descriptions

FIGURE 6 S1 INTERFACE CONTROL PLANE (ENODEB TO MME)

S1 interface control plane adopts IP-based transmission and SCTP

protocol over IP, providing reliable transmission to the signaling
message of radio network layer.
SCTP protocol inherits the advantages of TCP protocol, and opti-
mizes the reliability and security of transmission. Its property of
multi-streaming assures the redundancy protection of the trans-
port network layer chain. Compared with TCP protocol, SCTP has
the properties of attack-prevention and multi-homing.
S1 interface user plane S1–U is shown in Figure 7.

FIGURE 7 S1 INTERFACE USER PLANE (ENODEB TO SGW)

S1–U is GTP/UDP/IP protocol stack. One advantage of GTP-U pro-

tocol stack is the convenience of tunnel identity within the protocol.
The transport network layer has GTP tunnel end-point and IP ad-
dress identity.

to S1 interface, X2 interface also includes X2-C and X2-U. X2-C
is the control plane interface between eNodeBs, while X2-U is the
user plane interface between eNodeBs.
X2 interface supports the following functions:

Chapter 1 System Descriptions

System service data flow is shown in Figure 15.

FIGURE 15 SYSTEM SERVICE DATA FLOW

Uplink service data processing flow is described as below:

UE side: PDCP executes data header compression and encryp-
tion, RLC executes data segmentation, MAC executes multi-
plexing, PHY executes coding and modulation
eNodeB side: The corresponding protocols on eNodeB side
execute opposite processing, then data come to S-GW after

connection procedure, PDCP executes data header compression
and encryption of control signal, RLC executes data segmentation,
MAC executes multiplexing, and PHY executes coding and modu-
lation. The corresponding protocols on eNodeB side executes the
opposite processing, then data comes to MME after S1AP/SCTP

2.2 Boards and Modules

2.2.1 Overview

The boards/modules of the ZXSDR B8200 TL200 are classified into

the following types:
 Control and Clock module: CC
 Baseband Processing Board: BPL
 Power Module: PM
 Site Alarm module: SA
 Fan Array module: FA
 Site alarm Extension Board: SE
The ZXSDR B8200 TL200 is an BBU of a new generation based on
the MicroTCA architecture. The MicroTCA architecture, also called
μTCA architecture, adopts the PICMG standard and is a supplement
to the ATCA specification. Compared with the ATCA architecture,
the MicroTCA architecture is characterized by small size, low cost,
and high flexibility, and thus applicable to eNodeBs.
According to the MicroTCA specification, the ZXSDR B8200 TL200
modules are classified into Full-Height, Half-Height, Single-Width,
and Double-Width. Table 9 provides the Full-Height, Half-Height,
Single-Width, and Double-Width defined in the MicroTCA specifi-
cation.
