SAFETY TALK

SAFE DRIVING PRACTICES

Motor vehicle incidents are the leading cause of work fatalities. Crashes in cars
and other types of vehicles accounts for more than 33% of all work related
fatalities. Whether employees operate vehicles owned or leased by their
employer or drive personal cars for work purposes, they are at risk of being
involved in a roadway accident.

MINIMUM SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFE DRIVING

o Use a seat belt at all times – driver and passenger(s).

o Don’t drive vehicle if you don’t have a valid driving license.

o Always follow the prescribed speed limit.

o Never carry person on the cargo part of the pickup/vehicle.

o Never play with your car/vehicle.

o Be well-rested before driving.

o Avoid taking medications that make you drowsy.

o Set a realistic goal for the number of miles that you can drive safely each day.

o Driving requires your full attention. Avoid distractions, such as adjusting the
radio or other controls, eating or drinking, and talking on the phone

o Be alert on the road to tackle with any unusual situation.

o Stop about every two hours for a break. Get out of the vehicle to stretch, take a
walk, and get refreshed.

o Keep yourself cool in traffic and don’t be tensed.


o Be patient and courteous to other drivers.

o Do not take other drivers’ actions personally.

o Reduce your stress by planning your route ahead of time (bring the maps and
directions), allowing plenty of travel time, and avoiding crowded roadways and
busy driving times.

o Take extra precaution while reversing your vehicle because majority of work
related vehicle accidents take place during vehicle reversal.

o Park your car facing towards the road/access to avoid reversal.

o Don’t park small vehicles near heavy vehicles.
