What is length?
Measurement is a process of finding a number that
shows the amount of something. Which can be used
to compare with other objects or events.

D. Comparing Lengths
Example 1

The length of the motorcycle is 205 cm

The length of the car is 4 m 90 cm. 4 m 90 cm = (4 x 100 cm )+ 90 cm

= 400 cm + 90 cm
= 490 cm
How much longer the car to the motorcycle?
490 – 205 = 285 cm
The car is 285 cm longer than the motorcycle.
The motorcycle is 285 cm shorter than the car.
Example 2
Which is taller, the washing machine or the refrigerator?

The height of the washing machine is 85 cm

The height of the refrigerator is 2 m

2 m = 2 x 100 cm
= 200 cm
The height of the refrigerator is 200 cm

Answer:
The refrigerator is taller than washing machine.
Example 2
How much taller the refrigerator to the washing machine?

200 – 85 = 115 cm

The refrigerator is 115 cm taller than

washing machine.

The washing machine is 115 cm shorter

than refrigerator.
Example 3
How much taller is Chris to Jordan?
1m 50 cm Jordan is 80 cm
Chris is 1 m 50 cm
1 m 50 cm = (1 x 100 cm )+ 50 cm
80 cm = 100 cm + 50 cm
= 150 cm
Chris is 150 cm
150 - 80 = 70 cm

Answer : Chris is 70 cm taller than Jordan.

Example 4 Which is the longest? Which is the shortest?

Basketball court is Football field is 110 m Grass field is 900 cm

28 m 900 cm = 900 ÷ 100
Which is the longest? =9m
The football field is longest.
Which is the shortest?
The grass field is shortest.
Example 4

Grass field is 9 m

How long the basketball court to the grass field?

28 – 9 = 19 m
The basketball court is 19 m longer than the
grass field.
Example 4

Grass field is 9 m

How short the basketball court to the football field?

110 – 28 = 82 m
The basketball court is 82 m shorter than the football field.
Example 4

Grass field is 9 m

How long the football field to the grass field?

110 – 9 = 101 m
The football field is 101 m longer than the grass field.

E. Problem Solving Involving Lengths.
Example 1.
Rope A is 2 m 45 cm long and rope B is 82 cm long. What
is the total length of rope A and rope B?
Rope A = 2 m 45 cm
245 cm
= 200 cm + 45 cm
+ 82 cm
= 245 cm
327 cm
Rope B = 82 cm
Answer: The total length of rope A and rope B is 327 cm
Example 2.
A building is 75 m tall. A tree near the building is 900 cm
tall. How much shorter is the tree than the building?

Building= 75 m 75 m
Tree = 900 cm - 9m
= 900 cm ÷ 100 cm 66 m
=9m

Answer: The tree is 66 m shorter than the building.

Example 3.
Paul is 1 m 50 cm tall. Cristina is 98 cm tall.
What is the sum of their height in cm.

Paul’s height = 1 m 50 cm 150 cm

= 100 cm + 50 cm
= 150 cm
+ 98 cm
248 cm
Cristina’s height = 98 cm

Answer: The sum of Paul and Cristina’s height is 248 cm.
