Background: In December 2019, a coronavirus outbreak emerged and quickly infected all

countries, one of which was Indonesia. A medical worker is a profession that is vulnerable to
infection caused by viruses. One of the efforts to maintain health during a pandemic is by taking
multivitamins. Herbal compounds, such as echinacea, black elderberry, or zinc, are believed to
have anti-microbial and anti-viral effects, anti-inflammatory, enhance the immune response,
and have beneficial effects in preventing or treating COVID-19.

Research method: this research is a pre-experimental study, using a one-group pre-and post-
test design. Subjects was medical workers who were providing services to COVID-19 patients.
This study use consecutive sampling technique, start from July 2020 by giving medical workers
Echinacea, Black Elderberry, and zinc supplementation and observing the TNF-α and IFN-β
cytokines levels before and 30 days after supplementation.

Results: The serum TNF-α levels before supplementation was an average value of 2.995 pg/mL
and 4.847 pg/mL after 30 days of taking the combination supplement. The serum IFN-β levels
before supplementation was an average value of 1.412 pg/mL and 1.363 pg/mL after 30 days of
taking the combination supplement.
