Photobook Sui Generis People and Nature
Natural portraits of Fishermen families, their environment of sixteen remote islands they are living on
at the North-East Coast of Brazil with their stupendous nature sceneries. The visual
artwork is based on an ongoing ethnologic project that started in 2012. The photobook contains 66
colored artistic photographies on 150 pages. Just enjoy diving in a simple but economically autarch
world of solidarity you never knew that existed. In the comfort of your home. On a special five-day trip
walking up 40 meters high sand dunes and through an ocean of rainwater lakes, 100 kilometer from
one side of the Lençóis Maranhenses natural reservation park to the other side, while experimenting
astonishing beautiful and rare views of nature where humans are almost excluded. The only humans
aloud to live there are a small fishermen community of three families living in the middle of the park
during the rainy season and working the coast the remaining months of the year. You will come out of
the book differently where you started from. Enjoy as much this visual artistic ride that demand no
effort but bring plenty of joy to your heart. Surplus: The Lençóis Maranhenses natural reservation park
photographies are accompanied by written impressions of the natural spectacle crossing a surreal
area of almost galactical dimension where humans are strangers and pure nature forces are
highlighted by full-moon light, strong winds and star striking sky impressions. Wow.

Hornung, Andreas. Among Photographies: Dialectical and Critical Potential of Images. Rio de Janeiro,
2021. Book based on Thesis (PhD in Visual Arts), Rio de Janeiro, 2021.
The spatial and temporal displacement of men, along with their singularities and memories
they carry with them and the accelerated temporalities of modernity that they face during
displacement, cause a conflict, a shock. Thus, I wonder: Are photographic images able to translate,
reveal, register this conflict, confrontation or shock between different temporalities during the
displacement of men? What we seek here is to investigate the dialectical and critical potential of
artistic photographic images in the revelation of the conflict to which men are subjected when they are
displaced. In this context, we understand photography, through the use of the mechanical device of
the photographic camera, as a means for the (re)construction of the visible and for the revelation of
the invisible. We identified the shock as a theoretical category, as a fundamental element of Walter
Benjamin's dialectical image, capable of constituting, composing, orienting a reflective space on the
shock, experienced by men in displacement. Therefore, we understand the shock itself as an element
of revelation, capable of allowing an access to the past that changes the perception of the present
and future and give them (new) meanings. In this thesis, we verify if dialectical images (about
displacement), inscribed in the past, together with their dialectical and critical potential, only appear in
a sensitive medium to work with through a photochemical process that solely the future will provide.
Key-words: Photography, Dialetical and Critical Potential of Images, Local and Temporal
Displacement, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes

Hornung, Andreas. Between production and reception: dialectical and critical potential of the image.
Rio de Janeiro, 2020. Book.
In this book, we investigate especially the resistance of the photographic image in defending its
independence and autonomy, both threatened since it emerged, aiming to recognize it as the owner
of its proper dialectical and critical potential. During this research journey, we question how we could
understand its potential, by analysing the relation-sphere between the artist photographer, the image
itself printed on its sensible support, the observer who is looking at it and the image that looks back.
In this context, our research focus lies especially on the characteristics of the “in-between”, the
“outside”, the “beyond” of the dialectical and critical potential of photographic images of an artwork
collection. And we ask: Are we image and is the image us?

Title: The pure hope or its perfect absence: dialectical and critical potential of the image.

Hornung, Andreas. The pure hope or its perfect absence: dialectical and critical potential of the image.
Rio de Janeiro, July of 2020. Book.
In this book, we investigate, based on the existence of hope in the photographic image – or its total
absence, its dialectical and critical potential. As theoretical foundation we rely on great part of the
works of Albert Camus. After an initial and profound dive in the theoretical, philosophical and
psychological word of Camus, we focus in our investigation on the dialectical and critical potential,
using as object a photography of the artwork collection, result of an ongoing ethnological project that
started in 2012 on the islands at the North-East coast of the Brazilian state Maranhão where the
fishermen families live. And we ask: The photographic image can be the last refuge of the pure
human hope or its perfect absence, therefore, in both cases, its inherent essence and its dialectical
and critical potential?
Keywords: Photography, presence or absence of hope, dialectical or critical potential of the
photographic image, works of Albert Camus
ABSTRACT_______________________________________________________________________
________________
In this book, we investigate the dialectical and critical potential of the photographic artistic image while
questioning the material and immaterial potential of things. In this context, we may ask: Does the
photographic artistic image exist? Does the artist photographer exist? Is the photographic image real?
Is it the artist photographer who creates the image or is it the image that creates the artist and its
perceiver? How can we comprehend this reality where all three - artist photographer, photographic
image and perceiver - coexist with respect to their individual perceptions? Does the image
materialization depend on the perceiver who looks at the imagery work of art? After an initial and
profound investigation into the theoretical world of the Perception Philosophy of Irish Philosopher
George Berkeley (and, in addition, but very briefly, into those of his fellow countrymen Francis Bacon,
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, from the group of British empiricists, on one hand, and his
successor philosophers, developing their so called Subjective or Empirical Idealism in Germany (or
German Idealism) - namely Immanuel Kant, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von
Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, on the other hand), we start our investigation on the
dialectical and critical potential of the photographic artistic image, conducting an analysis of its
perception, based on images produced, part of an private art collection and result of an ongoing
ethnographic work, that started in 2012 on remote fishmen islands in the north-eastern coast of Brazil,
together with ongoing image productions during iterant exhibitions, entitled “Tour of (Three)
Americas”, to culminate, after all, in a final and ultimate production and presentation of the
photographic artwork in Tokyo, Japan, between August 5 and September 5 of 2021, during the
Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.

The topic is nothing new, but maybe the following hypothesis. We are talking about violence. Our
hypothesis is that violence is not appearing naturally, it has been invented. Or to say it in other words,
planted and then maintained for other reasons that have little to do with it alone. What this has to do
with Germany, Austria and Switzerland we will see in the sequence.
