Lesson Plan in Mathematics Grade 7
January 17, 2022

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of the key concepts of
measurement.

B. Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate real-life problems involving

measurements and solve these using a variety of strategies.

C. Learning Competency: The learner describes the development of measurement from the
primitive to the present international system of units.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of discussion, the students should be able to attain the following:
1. Identify the different body parts used in measurement of the primitive people
specifically in measuring length.
2. Measure objects using the primitive measurement methods.

II. Content
MEASUREMENT: History of Measurement

III. Learning Resources

History of Measurement

IV. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity: Jumbled Letters
Directions: The teacher will group the class into four. Each group will identify the word/terminology
based on the scrambled letters presented on power point. She will instruct them that these words are
related to measurement (Note: Only 1 minute time allotment for each group.) The group who will get the
most correct answers will be given additional points.
Words related to measurement:
ENLGHT PATE MUARESE
EURLR TERME
CTNIEMTERE
2. Analysis
The teacher will present the lesson thru power point presentation. The images/pictures of related
to the history of measurement will be shown.

Questions to be asked:
1. What is being portrayed in the pictures?
2. How are pictures related to each other?
An interactive video will be presented to provide instances of the new lesson.
The teacher will remind the students to watch attentively and to take down important details on the video.

History of Measurement
Based on the video presented, the following questions will be answered.
1. Based from what you have watched, what are the body parts that were used in measuring
by the ancient people?
2. How did primitive people use their hands for measurement? their legs? their foot?
After presenting, the teacher will discuss the lesson on measurement of primitive to present and its uses.
- Span (dangkal) – the distance from the tip of the finger to the tip of the thumb of an
outstretched
- Palm – the distance across the base of the four fingers that form the palm
- Digit – the thickness or width of the index finger
- Cubit – the distance from the tip of the middle finger of the outstretched hand to the front of
the elbow
- Pace- distance of one full step
- Foot (paa)- length of a foot
Then the teacher will present the standardized unit of measurement and the different measuring devices
like ruler, meter stick and etc.
Metric System of Measurement
1km = 1000m
1m = 100cm
1cm = 10mm
1dm = 10cm

The teacher will distribute a worksheet and will work by pair. Student will measure the different objects
written on their activity sheet using their body parts. Then 4 pairs will be randomly selected to present
their work on class.

Another questions to be asked:

What are the limitations of body measurements? Why do you think these limitations occurred?
3. Abstraction
The teacher will say, “You have learned that the system of measurements that utilize body parts served
the purposes of simple living of ancient people. What if we still use our body parts in measuring the
characteristics of objects in these modern times? What problems could resulted if the ancient system of
measurement is still adopted at present? “Are the nonstandard units of measure still applicable in the
present times? If so, in what manner?
Units that involve body parts vary according to the body built of the person who is measuring. These are
not fixed references, hence they are nonstandard units of measurement.
4. Application
Activity: “Measure Me ”
The teacher has a box with different objects inside. The teacher will pick the object/pictures inside the
box and show it to the students. Then the students will identify what body parts is appropriate to measure
the object.

The leader will assign a number to his members and the one that the teacher to call is the one who is
going to answer.

Objects to be measured:
Ruler pencil eraser
Book paper clip picture of the floor of classroom

V. EVALUATION
Directions: Choose the letter of your choice before each number.

_____1. Your teacher ask to measure the width of your arm chair. Which of the following is the
appropriate units of measure you should use?
A. Pace B. Cubit C. Span D. foot

_____2. Which of the following units can be found by measuring from the elbow to the tip of the middle
finger?
A. Foot B. Digit C. Palm D. Cubit

_____3. Suppose you’re going to measure the distance of school from your house, which of the following
is appropriate to use?
A. Pace B. Foot C. Span D. Cubit

_____4. How primitive people measures an object?

A. They used their body parts.
B. They used their clothing.
C. They used their hair.
D. They have their own measuring devices like ruler.

_____5. Ryza and Helen measured the width of teacher’s table. Ryza’s measurement was 5 spans and
Helen’s was 7 spans. They compared their measurement and found out that they have different measures.
What do you think is the reason behind it?
A. They did not use the appropriate body parts in measuring.
B. They have different hand size that’s why we must use measuring devices like ruler.
C. Ryza’s hand is bigger than Helen.
D. Helen’s hand is smaller compared to Ryza.
