Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue your
studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions
are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell
you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you
need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at our own pace and time. It is
designed to help you calculate the measures of central tendency of ungrouped and
grouped data.
In this learning module you will learn to illustrate the measures of central
tendency (mean, median, and mode) of a statistical data.

Arrange the collected data values in ascending order with their corresponding
frequencies: 2 6 5 8 2 5 5 3

Questions:

1. What score frequently appears?

2. What score appears to be in the middle?
3. How many students fall below the middle score?

Consider the situation below.

Pulangbato High School is looking for a Mathematics’ Quiz contestant. James and
Derek are both excelling in this subject. They are given four sets of 30 item test.
James’ scores are 27, 25, 26 and 26 while Derek’s scores are 29, 22, 25 and 24.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is the average score of James?
2. What is the average score of Derek?
3. Who will be the final Mathematics’ Quiz contestant between the two?

Measures of Central Tendency

The mean (commonly called the average) of a set of n numbers is the sum of all the numbers
divided by n.

The median is the middle number when the number in a set of data is arrange in descending
order. When there are even numbers of elements, the median is the mean of two middle
numbers.
The mode is the number that occurs most often in a set of data. A set of data can have more
than one mode. If all the numbers appear the same number of times, there is no mode for the
data set.

UNGROUPED DATA:

(www.mathsisfun.com. n.d.)

To find the Mean Alex adds up all the numbers, then divides by how many numbers:
Mean = 59 + 65 + 61 + 62 + 53 + 55 + 60 + 70 + 64 + 56 + 58 + 58 + 62 + 62 + 68 + 65 + 56 + 59 + 68 + 61 + 67
21
= 61.38095

To find the Median Alex places the numbers in value order and finds the middle number.

In this case the median is the 11th number:

53,55,56,56,58,58,59,59,60,61,61,62,62,62,64,65,65,67,687,68,70
Median = 61

3 NegOr_Q4_Mathematics7_Module5_v2
To find the Mode or modal value, Alex places the number in value order then counts how
many of each number. The mode is the number which appears most often (there can be more
than one mode).

53,55,56,56,58,58,59,59,60,61,61,62,62,62,64,65,65,67,687,68,70

62 appears three times, more often than the other values,

so, Mode = 62

The Mean X

Formula Mean (Ungrouped Data)

X = mean Σ𝑋 =sum of the scores

𝚺𝑿𝟏
𝑿= where: X1 = scores N = total frequency
𝑵

Example 1:
The following is a list of the weekly savings of 10 students.
Student Abel Brenda Carlos Donna Edwin Fred Gina Hans Izzy Jacob
Weekly
60 50 40 50 70 50 50 80 70 70
savings ₱

Find the average weekly savings per student.

Solution:
Σ𝑋1 60 + 50 + 40 + 50 + 70 + 50 + 50 + 80 + 70 + 70
𝑋= = = ₱ 𝟓𝟗. 𝟎𝟎
𝑁 10

The value of ₱59.00 is the mean of the set of values that represent the savings of the students.

4 NegOr_Q4_Mathematics7_Module5_v2
Formula Weighted Mean To find the mean of a set of
data in frequency table.
𝚺𝐟𝐗
𝑿= 1. Multiply each ‘X’ in the
𝑵
set of data by ‘f’ to obtain
‘fX’.
where: x = mean f = frequency, x = score 2. Find the sum of ‘fX’.
3. Find the sum of , (N).
ΣfX = sum of the product of frequency and score
4. The mean, 𝑿 = 𝚺𝐟𝐗 𝑵
N = total frequency

Let us represent the data in Example 1 in a frequency table.

Weekly savings (₱) Number of students
(x) (f)
40 1
50 4
60 1
70 3
80 1
N = 10

To apply the formula for weighted mean, we add the ‘fx’ column to the frequency table.
Weekly Number of Weekly savings •
savings (₱) students Number of students

(x) (f) (fx)

40 1 40
50 4 200
60 1 60
70 3 210
80 1 80
N = 10 Σfx = 590

5 NegOr_Q4_Mathematics7_Module5_v2
Use the formula to calculate the mean.
𝚺𝐟𝐗 𝟓𝟗𝟎
𝑿= = = 𝟓𝟗
𝑵 𝟏𝟎

The mean weekly savings per student is ₱59.00.

The Median (X ) UNGROUPED

Example:
The scores of the 9 students in example 1 are arranged in ascending order as follows.
Student Fred Brenda Gina Donna Abel Edwin Izzy Jacob Hans
Scores 50 50 50 50 60 70 70 70 80
Find the median of the distribution.
Solution:

N=9
𝑵+𝟏 𝒕𝒉
X = ( ) score
𝟐

𝟗+𝟏 𝒕𝒉
=( ) score
𝟐

= 5th score
= 60 (median)
In general, a data with N observations arranged in ascending order.
1. If N is odd, the median is the middle position which is
𝑁 𝑡ℎ
( 2 ) position.

2. If N is even, the median is the mean of two middle data which are
𝑵 𝒕𝒉 𝑵 𝒕𝒉
the ( 𝟐 ) and ( 𝟐 + 𝟏) data.

The Median (X ) GROUPED

In computing for the median of ungrouped data, the following formula is used:
∑𝒇
−<𝒄𝒇
Median = 𝒍𝒃𝒎𝒄 + [ 𝟐 𝒇 ]𝒊
𝒎𝒄

where: lbmc is the lower boundary of the median class;

f is the frequency of each class;
6 NegOr_Q4_Mathematics7_Module5_v2
<cf is the cumulative frequency of the lower class next to the median class;
fmc is the frequency of median class; and
i is the class interval.
The median class is the class with the smallest cumulative frequency greater than or
∑𝒇
equal to 𝟐 . The computed median must be within the median class.

Example:
Calculate the median of the Mid-year Test Sores of students in Filipino.

Mid-year Test Scores of Students in Filipino

scores Frequency

36 – 40 8
31 – 35 8
26 – 30 14
21 – 25 7

Solution:
Scores frequency lb <cf
41 – 45 1 40.5 40
36 – 40 8 35.5 39
31 – 35 8 30.5 31

The 20th score contained in the class 26-30. This means that the median falls
within the class boundaries of 26-30. That is, 25.5 – 30.5.
b. <cf = 9
c. fmc = 14
d. Lbmc = 25.5
e. i=5

Solution:
∑𝑓
−<𝑐𝑓
Median = 𝑙𝑏𝑚𝑐 + [ 2 𝑓 ]𝑖
𝑚𝑐

40
−9
2
Median = 25.5 + [ ]5
14
Median = 25.5 +3.93
Median = 29.43

7 NegOr_Q4_Mathematics7_Module5_v2
The Mode (UNGROUPED)
The mode of a distribution is the data with the highest frequency.
One easy way to obtain the mode is to use a stem-and-leaf plot or frequency table.
Weekly savings (₱) Number of students
(X) (f)

40 1

50 4

60 1

70 3

80 1

N = 10

Stem-and-leaf Plot
Stems Leaves key: 5|0 means 50
4 0
5 0 0 0 0
6 0
Clearly, the mode is ₱50.00 because it has the highest frequency.
7 0 0 0
8 0
The Mode (GROUPED)
The mode of grouped data can be approximated using the following formula:

𝑫𝟏
Mode = 𝒍𝒃𝒎𝟎 + [ ]𝒊
𝑫𝟏 +𝑫𝟐

where: lbmo = is the lower boundary of the modal class

D1 = is the difference between the frequencies of the modal class and the next upper
class;
D2 = is the difference between the frequencies of the modal class and the next lower
class; and
i = is the class interval

the modal class with the highest frequency.

Example:
Calculate the mode of the mid-year test scores of the students in Filipino.

8 NegOr_Q4_Mathematics7_Module5_v2
Mid-year Test Scores of Students in Filipino
scores
41 – 45
36 – 40

Scores frequency lb
41 – 45 1 40.5
36 – 40 8 35.5
31 – 35 8 30.5
26 – 30 14 25.5 Modal Class
21 – 25 7 20.5
16 - 20 2 15.5
i=5 f = 40

Since class 26-30 has the highest frequency, therefore the modal class is 26-30.

Lbmo = 25.5
D1 = 14 – 8 = 6
D2 = 14 – 7 = 7
i=5
𝐷
Mode = 𝑙𝑏𝑚0 + [ 1 ] 𝑖
𝐷1 +𝐷2
6
Mode = 25.5 + [6+7] 5

Mode = 25.5 +2.31

Mode = 27.81
Therefore, the mode of the mid-year test score is 27.81
