To express the draught in terms of column of hot gas:

25
Mithilesh Singh (Sr. Advisor-IBCS) 9827482029
Emission Control Devices

1.Velocity of flue gases in chimney v = √(2ghg)

2.Temperature of hot gases for the maximum discharge
Tg=2[(m+1)/m]/Ta
3.Draught produced in mm of water under the maximum
discharge
hmax=353H/2T
4.Efficiency of a chimney:
η = (hg × g)/ 1000 × CP × (TN – TA)
Where hg= height of the flue gas column equivalent to the
draught produced in meter.
TN = temperature of flue gas with natural draught in *K
TA = temperature of flue gas with artificial draught in *K
Cp = specific heat of flue gas in kJ/ kg K. Its value may be taken
26
as 1.005 kJ/ kg K, unless given.

Calculate the height of

chimney required to produce a draught
equivalent to 1.7cm of water if the flue
gas temperature is 270*C and ambient
temperature is 22*c and minimum
amount of air per kg of fuel is 17Kg.

Draught in mmwc h=1.7cm=17mm

Flue gas temperature Tg=270+273=543*K
Ambient Temperature Ta=22+273=295*K
Min amount of air per kg of fuel w=17Kg
To Calculate Height of Chimney” H” using the
relation h = 353 H [1/Ta – (w + 1) / wT]
17=353xH[(1/295)-{(17+1)/17x543}]
17=353H[(1/295)-(18/9231)]
17=353H(0.00339-0.00195)
17=353x0.00144xH

Estimate SO2 emission through chimney in Tons/annum.

Data as follows: Days considered=340, Fuel used : Furnace oil Specific
gravity =0.94, Sulphur content= 3.8% ,Quantity of FO consumption
=3.5KL/hr and If measured O2 in flue gas is 2.5%, Find % Excess air
level.
Quantity of Sulphur in Kg/Annum =
3.5x1000x0.94x24x340x0.038 = 1020163.2 Kg/Annum
S + O2 =SO2
32 +2x16 =64
As per above equation of sulphur emission ,1 Kg of Sulphur will
generate 2 Kg of SO2.
Hence SO2 emission through chimney = 2x1020163.2= 2040326.4 Kg/
Annum
% Excess air =[O2%x100]/( 21-O2%)= [2.5x100]/( 21-2.5)

A chimney 30 meter high deals with flue gases at

288*C,when the outside air temperature is 21*C. The air
supplied for combustion is 18kg/kg of coal burnt . Calculate –
A) The draught in mm of water column produced by the
chimney.
B) The draught produced in terms of height of column of hot
gases in meters.
C) The velocity of flue gases in chimney,if 50%of the draught
is lost in friction at the grate an passages
D) The draught produced in mm of water and the temperature
of flue gases under the condition of maximum discharge.

[A] Draught in mm of water column

h= 353 H [ 1/Ta–( w+1 )/wxT]
=353 x 30 [ 1/294–( 18+1 ) /18 x 561 ] = 10590 [ 0.0034 –
0.0019 ] = 10590 [0.0015 ]
[B] Available draught is 50 % of the theoretical draught
P = 0.5 x15.885 = 7.942 mmwc = 7.942 x 9.81 N/m2
Now this pressure is caused by height of gas column =
hg x 353 ( w+1 ) /WT x 9.81 = P(N/m2)
hg x 353 ( w+1 ) /WT x 9.81 = 7.942 x 9.81
hg x 353 ( 18 + 1 ) / ( 18x561 ) x 9.81 = 7.942 x 9.81
hg x 353 x19 / 18 x 561 = 7.942
hgx0.6641=7.942 or hg=7.942 /0.6641 or hg=11.96 mmwc
Draught produced in terms of height of column of hot gases

[C] Velocity of flue gases in chimney

v = √(2ghg) =√(2x 9.81x11.96)
[D] Temperature of flue gas under the maximum
discharge condition
T / T1 = 2 (w+1 ) / w
T = T1 x 2 ( w+ 1 ) / w
= 294 x 2 ( 18+1 ) /18
= 62.67 K = 347.67*c
Draught produced in mm of water under the
maximun discharge hmax=353H/2T1
