Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared
for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons
in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing
this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s
assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of
each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We
trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher
are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before
performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in
answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your
teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the about matter. The scope of this module permits
it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the
course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

➢ Collect data on one variable using existing records.
➢ Sort, classify, and organize data in tabular form and present
this into a vertical or horizontal bar graph.

What is It

Data is information; information is knowledge.

When data are in their original form, they are called raw data.
Data collection is the process of gathering and measuring
information on variables of interest.

Additional Activities
Conduct a survey on the entertainment activity each member
of your family prefers. Let each member choose from the
activities listed in the table below. Tally their responses in the
table.

Note: for families with few members, an alternative is to conduct

the same survey with your friends as respondents.

What is It

Data organization refers to the method of classifying and

organizing data sets to make them more useful.
Data can be organized by using:
1. Tally- is a way of counting how many of each group are there.
Example:
Score Tally Total
20 IIII 4
19 IIII 5
18 III 3

16
2. Bar graph- is a graphic means of quantitative comparison by
rectangles with lengths proportional to the measure of the data or
things being compared. There are two kinds of bar graph, the
horizontal graph and vertical graph.
Horizontal bar graph- represents the data horizontally. It is a
graph whose bars are drawn horizontally. The data categories are
shown on the vertical axis and the data values are shown on the
horizontal axis. The length of each bar is equal to the value
corresponding the data category and all bars go across from left t
right.
Example:

Vertical bar graph- is a graph that usually displays data using

vertical bars going up from the bottom, whose lengths are
proportional to quantities they represent. It can be used when one
axis cannot have a numerical scale.
Example:

17
What’s More

Use the information below to form the data in the table and bar
graph. Then create three questions that can be answered using the
bar graph.
The Grade 3 pupils are divided into 3 groups. Each group has 7
members. The members are assign to collect empty plastic bottles
for their fund raising project. These are the lists of empty bottles that
are collected with each group in 5 days.
