FINALS ACTIVITY 2

1. ON AGGRESSION:
Consider how social psychologists would analyze three (3) from the following behaviors.
What do you think might have caused each one? Consider your answer in terms of
underlying motivations of enhancing the self and connecting with others.
◦ A football linebacker tackles an opponent and breaks his arm.
 Since they are playing, it becomes unintentional harm, although harm was done.

◦ A salesperson repeatedly calls a customer to try to convince her to buy a product, even
though the customer would rather he did not.
 In this situation, it doesn’t show aggression because his intention is not to harm
◦ Malik loses all the changes he made on his term paper and slams his laptop computer on
the floor.
◦ Sally spreads false rumors about Michele.
◦ Jamie knows that Bill is going to hit Frank when he next sees him,
but she doesn’t warn him about it.
◦ A suicide bomber kills himself and 30 other people in a crowded bus.
◦ North Korea develops a nuclear weapon that it claims it will use to defend itself
from potential   attack by other countries but that the United States sees as a threat to
world peace.
 For North Koreans they seem to see the situation as a national pride for being
able to develop such kind of weapon, but not to cause harm.

2. ON WORKING GROUPS: PERFORMANCE & DECISION MAKING:
Consider a time when a group that you belonged to experienced a process loss. Which of
the factors discussed in the lesson do you think were important in creating the problem?
 The task being given may have been challenging or poorly learned, making the dominant
response likely to be the wrong one. Additionally, because an increase in arousal would
increase the likelihood that the dominant response would occur, performance would be
impaired. These factors may contribute to process loss.
 The presence of other people can either boost or decrease performance. Another factor
that may cause process loss is the great degrees of diversity exhibited by each group
member.
3. ON COMPETITION & COOPERATION IN OUR SOCIAL WORLDS:
Discuss an example of a person who is a member of a social group and who you believe
has used social creativity strategies in an attempt to improve his or her self-image. What
were the strategies, and were they successful?
 An illustration would be dishonest bankers who would highlight their work ethic rather than
the ethics of their work to support their social identity when challenged with moral
questions about their character that are difficult to dismiss.
