Materials Research Assignment

1. Jarrah is a native timber of Western Australia.

Write a paragraph (using TEEL) about Jarrah describing where it is grown in WA


and the characteristics of the timber. Characteristics may include colour, texture,
use, cost and its workability (is it easy to cut, drill and sand).

Jarrah can be found on the south coast region of Perth, and the colour of jarrah is
a dark red colour. The texture of jarrah is coarse. Jarrah can be used in bridge
construction, railway sleepers, cross arms, poles and piles. Jarrah is hard and
dense; jarrah is a pleasure to work with hand tools. It marks out cleanly off the
knife, cuts well with sharp tools and keeps a crisp edge.Jarrah decking prices start
from $185 - $320 per square metre

2. Radiata Pine (Pinus Radiata) is grown in plantations throughout Australia. It is an


introduced species of timber originating from the USA. It is a very commonly used
timber in all forms of woodworking including house building and furniture making. In
a brief paragraph (using TEEL), describe why Radiata Pine is a preferred timber
when making projects in schools. (Think about its characteristics.)

3. PVA Glue is the choice of glue for all school woodworking projects. It has a number
of important characteristics that make it suitable for schools. Make a list of these
