9.1 UNLOADING
• Unloading of the pipe should be done on a level site and be controlled to avoid colliding
with other pipe sections. Care should be taken to avoid damage, especially to the spigots
and bells.
• Caution should be exercised to ensure personnel is out of the path of the pipe as it
moved.
• Lifting devices such as slings, chains, or cables should be placed around the pipe or
arranged so that the pipe is lifted in a horizontal position at all times. Padding should be
provided between the pipe and the lifting device so that the lifting device could not be
chipped or damaged the pipe.
• If the pipe has to be moved after unloading, the sections should be rolled or lifted, and
should never be dragged. Pipe sections should not be rolled over rough or rocky ground.
Figure 1
9.2 STOCKPILING
• For trench installations, the pipe should be placed on the side opposite the excavated
material.
• The pipe sections should be placed at a proper site so that they are protected from
traffic and construction equipment, but close enough to the trench edge to minimize
8 of 61
handling.
9.3 STORAGE
• The pipe should be stored in a safe place near the site as per Instructions
• The bottom layer should be placed on a level base, on timbers supporting the barrel
at either end. Each layer of bell and spigot pipe should be arranged so that bells are
at the same end.
• The bells in the next layer should be at the opposite end and projecting beyond the
spigot of the section in the lower layer. Where only one layer is being stockpiled, the
bell and spigot ends should alternate between adjacent pipe sections.
• Pipes shall be internally cement lined to BS EN 545 or BS ISO 4179 with ordinary
Portland cement to BS EN 197-1 to specified thicknesses. The cement mortar lining
shall be certified as suitable for use with potable water by an internationally
accepted organization.
• Externally, pipe shall be coated with metallic zinc to BS EN 545 or BS ISO 8179
and followed by a bitumen coat to BS 3416 or BS ISO 8179 of minimum thickness 6
mils.
• In case of repairs are needed the AWPT team shall take immediate action to correct
the situation.
• Its shall be submitted the repair procedure to the consultant for approval. The
procedure for the repair shall be as directed by the consultant engineer and the
9 of 61
manufacture specification.
• Check the pipes routing are as per the approved shop drawings.
• Check that the location of pipe routings has been excavated with the required depth.
• Using a wire brush and a rag, carefully clean the inside of the socket particularly the
gasket recesses. In particular, remove any deposits of earth, sand, etc. also clean the spigot
of the pipe to be joined and the gasket itself. Check the presence of the chamfer, as well as
the absence of any damage on the spigot of the pipe.
• Check the condition of the gasket and insert it into its recess, with the lips pointing
towards the bottom of the socket. Make sure that the gasket is correctly compressed all the
way round.
• Coat with lubricating paste recommended and supplied by manufacturing, the spigot end
of the pipe and the exposed surface of the gasket. The gasket recess must not be coated
with lubricating paste, except for small diameter pipes or fitting when problems arise on
fitting the gasket.
• Center the spigot in the socket and hold the pipe in a position by resting it on two wedges
of bedding soil.
• Push in the spigot until the first mark disappears inside the socket. The second mark must
still be visible after assembly.
• Check that the gasket is correctly in position by inserting the end of a metal ruler through
the annular spigot and socket gap until it touches the gasket. The ruler must penetrate to
the same depth around the whole circumference.
• Jointing must be done with well aligned pipes. Make sure that the curvature after
10 of 61
assembly does not exceed the permissible angular deflection of particular joint.
• It is possible to use the hydraulic force of the arm and bucket of a mechanical digger to
join pipes and straight fittings. In this case:
✓ push slowly and steadily, observing the rules for pipe joining.
• This joint is used where it is difficult to effect push on joint and to make good a leaking
pipe in a pipeline
• This joint comprises a gland, a trapezium shaped gasket and set of bolts, nuts and washers.
• In order to complete this joint the metal gland is inserted over the spigot end of one pipe.
The gland will have sufficient number of bolt holes.
• The socket of the next pipe to be joined will not have any groves inside but the internal
diameter will be sufficient enough to accommodate a trapezium shaped rubber gasket.
• The spigot of pipe with the gland and rubber gasket is inserted in to the socket of the next
pipe and bolts are inserted into the gland in such a manner that the hook heads are towards
the socket of the pipe to be joined.
• The gland pushes the rubber gasket and presses it so that the circumferential seal is
affected after jointing.
11 of 61
R1
13.1.3 Assembly of Flange Joint
• Flange joints are rigid joints. Flanges are fixed on either ends of barrel pipe piece.
• The jointing of the two flanged end pipes is done by placing gaskets in between the
flanges and tightening the flanges with bolts, nuts and washers.
R1
13.1.4 Restrained joint pipes
• The DI pipes with these joints are ideally suitable for the pipe line to be laid over loose
soil or marshy land where one cannot provide anchor blocks at Tee points, or bends etc.
• This joint comprises an assembly of socket and spigot pipes with glands, split ring and a
set of hook bolts, nuts and washers.
• The spigot end of the pipe is provided with a weld bead and the socket of the pipe to be
joined have a circumferential projected collar.
✓ The gland made of SG iron have an internal diameter slightly above the
dimension of the weld bead outer diameter. The gland is slid over the spigot
end of the pipe and rested.
✓ The split ring or arrester ring or retainer ring is having an internal diameter
12 of 61
exactly as that of external diameter of the pipe barrel. The split ring is
opened slightly and slid over the weld bead and rested within the gland in
such manner that the taper of the spit ring and the inside taper of the gland
match exactly.
✓ Insert the rubber gasket in to the socket of the next pipe to be joined.
✓ Make the jointing of the two pipes by inserting the spigot end of one pipe
into another.
✓ Move the gland along with split ring towards the socket of the next pipe till
the weld bead on to spigot of the pipe.
✓ Insert the hook bolts from socket side in to the gland and start tightening
using bolts, nuts and washers.
• Push on joints can be deflected up to 3º30‘depending upon pipe diameter. Long radius
curves can be negotiated without fittings. The details are as mentioned in the following
table:
13 of 61
R1 13.1.6 Polyethylene Sleeve
• Polyethylene Sleeves: Protective polyethylene sleeves shall be used with all DI pipes and
fittings to be installed in buried condition and shall be in accordance with BS 6076 or DIN
EN 14628 or AWWA C105 and pipes and fittings must be clean and dry before sleeving.
• Before lowering the pipe into the trench, raise it up and slip the pleated sleeving along the
barrel.
• The sleeving must fit in the pipes as tight as possible (importance of the fold and ties).
• The barrel and joint sleeve overlaps must provide total continuity of protection.
• The fold must always be made at the top of the pipes, to limit the risk of damage during
backfilling.
• Anti-Corrosion Pipe Wrapping Tape: The tape shall be supplied 150 mm or 225 mm wide
in 15 m or 25 m rolls, or approved by Engineer depending upon the requirements.
• Thrust blocks in a pipeline refer to the concrete blocks provided in buried pipelines for
preventing movement and absorb thrust forces. For large buried pipelines, the pressure
thrust force becomes too large that is usually exerted on elbows and tees. Thrust blocks
are therefore added in those regions to avoid the failure of piping components.
• Thrust blocks are needed in underground pipeline directional changes. So, in all the
14 of 61
fittings likes elbows, wyes, Tees, Caps, wherever the pipeline changes the direction.
So, as specified above, there are four parameters required for sizing a thrust block.
Those are:
• Pipe Size to calculate pipe cross-sectional area for calculating thrust force.
• Soil bearing load to find out the area required for the thrust block and
• Type of fitting (& Degree of angle in case of bends) to define the geometry of the thrust
block.

13.1.8 Hydrostatic test
R1
• Field testing: Generally:
✓ Provision of test equipment: All items for test have to be provided on site before the
test i.e. pressure gauges, instruments, water etc.
✓ Fittings and joints: Permanently anchor fittings before testing and leave all joints
exposed for checking.
✓ Test sections: Test pressure lines between valve chambers whenever possible.
✓ Test sections: No testing shall be carried out against or through the pressure reducing
valves. The setting of the pressure reducing valves shall not be changed for testing
purposes.
✓ Closed valve: Do not test against a closed valve unless there is no acceptable
alternative.
✓ Apply pressure by manually operated test pump or, in the case of large diameter
mains, by power driven test pump, if approved.
✓ Failure: Should a test fail, locate and replace or make good defective pipe or replace
and make good faulty joint. Retest main.
✓ Records: keep test records in an approved form. Hand original copy to the Engineer
immediately after completion of test.
✓ Fill pipe slowly with water from lowest point. Do not use power-driven pump unless
approved.
✓ Fill absorbent pipes with water and allow to stand for at least 24 hours to allow
complete absorption.
16 of 61
✓ Pressurizing is to continue until specified test pressure is reached in lowest part of
section under test. Bleed further quantities of entrapped air while raising pressure.
✓ Maintain test pressure for specified test duration with pumping stopped.
✓ Visible leaks are detected, regardless of leakage being within specified limits.
✓ Volume of water lost during period when pumping was stopped exceeds allowable
leakage.
•
R1
After hydrostatic test the water will be disposed as:
✓ Drainage point will be coordinated with relative partner as (Eastern Municipality &
NWC).
✓ By tankers suction.
• All pipe tests should follow a PQP and NWC specifications, and each test must approve by
a consultant engineer and under his supervision.
• Installing pipes must follow the supplier's instructions with the proper tools and experienced
staff members.
17 of 61
• The thickness of bedding down, around, and above pipes must be checked and approved by
the Consultant engineer (ILF).
• The consultant supervisor shall check the slope of the pipe in approved shop drawings and
approve it before starting any partial backfilling activities.
• DI Pipe and Fittings Installation Work must be according to the DI Pipes and Fittings ITP.
