Mountains form where two plates collide. Both plates have a similar
thickness and weight, neither one will sink under the other. Instead, they

crumple and fold until the rocks are forced up to form a mountain range.

Rift valleys are formed at the divergent plate margins where crustal extension
takes place. The forces that acts on the plate is not too intence to create a
major break because of the thickness of the crust, but it develops several
cracks & faults.

The movement of the Earth's plates leads to rocks being compressed
into each other, and this in turn leads to the formation of folds and
faults. Folds form when the layers of rock bend around, and faults occur
where rock layers actually break, and in some cases slide over each
other.
