Problem
Design a platform to place a 1500 kVA
transformer.

Data :

• Weight = 4000kg
• Height = 10 m

Dimensions:

• 1860 mm (Height) x 860 mm (depth) x 1960 mm

(Length)
Points to Ponder :
• The platform is to be supported by at least two columns made of mild steel and fixed in
concrete at the foundation.
• The structure must be designed with minimum cost and
simplicity.
• Design should cater for different failure modes such as material of
strength of columns and platform frame, and also guard against buckling of columns.
• Calculate the total mass of the structure by using any suitable analytical /
computational method.
• The structural analysis must also be done analytically and may be verified through
computational resources.
Approach
• Determining the dimensions of the platform.
• Determining the arrangement of the column.
• The material used for the structure (i.e. steel).
• Analyzing the structure for any type of failures (buckling, strength).
• Use of suitable mathematical equations to come up to the best
possible solution.
• Determining the Factor of Safety.

THE BEAM
Material Mild Steel
