MW-Link UNIT MW-Link UNIT
(NX-MWLINK) (NX70-MWLINK)

1-1. Features
● Realization of communication among PLCs with ease
As wire cables are used in transmission lines, it is easy to wire and install them.
As NX700/NX70 PLC are connected on Multi-drop mode, it is easy to
communicate among PLCs.

● High-speed/Long distance Transmission

It is possible to transmit with 500kbps of transmission speed and 800m of total extension
distance among units.

● Maximum 16 PLCs communicate by sharing link-dedicated relay(L,M) and register (W)

( PLC link function)
In PLC link communication, you can use link relay(L, M: 1024 points) or link register
(W: 128 words), and you can also share data of L and W among 16 PLCs in the maximum.

● Enable to use data transmission function and remote programming function

Data transmission function uses the commands of SEND and RECV. It is the function to
exchange contact(bit)·register(word) information among PLCs. In addition, remote programming,
if in the same network, can edit programs, do monitoring, set system register and read/write
data of the CPU unit in the other station.(It can be used in WinGPC)

● Enable to install maximum 2 links per CPU unit

You can connect Max. 2 Link units (MW-Link) to a CPU unit.

3-2. PLC Link Communication

● PLC Link communication is one of the functions available with a MW-Link System.

● In a PLC Link communication, data is shared between PLCs connected with Link units by writing
or reading data in memory areas called Link register (W) and Link relay(L, M) which exist in
each PLC.
● Since no special instruction for data communication are required when using the PLC Link
function, you can create programs without needing complicated procedures.
● PLC link communication is the data sharing communication by transmitting Link register(W) and
Link relay(L, M) between PLCs connected with Link units with cyclic
● They are called「PLC Link 0」and「PLC Link 1」starting with the unit which is closest the
CPU unit.

3-2-2. Configuring the PLC Link Area

● The data is sent from the send area of the PLC Link Area in one CPU to the receive area of the
PLC Link Area in the other CPUs.
● Each PLC Link Area is composed of the Link relay area(L,M) and Link register area(W).
● In both Link relay and register areas, address must be assigned for the send and receive areas.

● The send area relative addresses in the PLC Link Area should not be overlapped in one network
(Loop). If the send area addresses overlap each other in the same loop, an error will occur.
● Allocation of link area should be set by ladder program.

The area available as the PLC Link Area is configured as follows :

Notes

● One CPU can control a maximum of 2 PLC Link units for PLC Link function.
● The units in PLC Link Mode are designated as "PLC LINK0" and "PLC LINK1" starting with
the unit which is closest the CPU unit.
● Any area which is not used as a part of the PLC Link can be used as normal internal relays
and data registers.
● When only one Link unit is installed, the area「for PLC Link1」can't be used.
● In case of only one Link unit is installed, Link relay available is 1024 points in the maximum
and Link register available is 128 word in the maximum.

(2) Allocating of PLC Link areas

● Each PLC Link Area( "PLC Link0" and "PLC Link1") should be allocated its own areas
(Link relay and Link register) as a separate send and receive areas.
● The send area addresses in each memory cell should not be overlapped in the same network
(Loop). If the send area addresses overlap each other in the same loop, an error will occur.

3-3. Data transmitting

● Data transmission is to send and receive contact(relay)·data(register) information
by the Ladder programs between PLCs Linked with MW-Link.
● It exchanges data directly with the data areas of CPU unit in the opposite side by using「the
instructions of data sending and receiving」(SEND, SENDB, RECV, RECVB commands).
● If the Link units (32 units in the maximum) are connected to the network of MW-Link,
you can use data transmission whether it is by PLC Link mode or not.

3-3-2. Notes in Data transmitting

■ Check the status of data transmission

● Commands of data sending(SEND) and data receiving(RECV) can be run only one at
a time. In addition, as it requires data sending and receiving in running the commands,
actual sending and receiving should be done after finishing program scan.

● In order to check the status of running the commands when you transmit data,
use special relay (Flag) or data register.
* When you run several commands of data sending and receiving, make sequence
programs which will avoid running simultaneously by using special relay as follows.

Special relay and data register for checking the status of running data transmission

4-1. Self-Test Function of Hardware

● Self-test function of hardware is to check if there are any errors in the hardware of MW-Link unit.
As self-test of hardware runs right after supplying power, MW-Link unit operates when there are no
errors in hardware.

If it detects any error in hardware

h Two LEDs of「ERROR 」will flash.

h Turn it OFF in the first place, and try restarting several times. If two LEDs of
「ERROR 」continue flashing, there must be errors in hardware.
* If you have spare W-Link unit, change them and try running again.

Appendix2 Communication Times

Appendix2. Communication Times

The communication time is the time required for communications to be completed in a
network. This depends upon the transmission cycle, transmission timing and the time needed for
CPU processing(CPU scan time).

1-1. Transmission Cycle Time

● In the Multi Wire-Link System, a token is passed from one station to the next in
sequential manner. One transmission cycle is specified as the time required for "one
token(mastership) to be passed from one station to the next ,etc., until it returns to
the same station."

Notes

·Refer to the figure shown on the below.

·The transmission cycle of the Multi Wire-Link System is not synchronous with the CPU
scan.

Appendix2 Communication Times

● The time needed for one transmission cycle is called the transmission cycle time.
The total transmission cycle time ″Ttc″is calculated by adding the time needed for

1-2. Time for PLC Link Processing at Each Station

The time needed for PLC Link Processing at a station in PLC Link Mode is
calculated using the following equation :

● When the station is not in PLC Link Mode

● When the station is not in PLC Link Mode

Where :
Bpci = Number of bytes (=8 bits, =1/2 word) used for the send relay & data link areas in
station i(UNIT NO.i).
[number of bytes used for the send relay Link area = points /8 (= words × 2)]
[number of bytes used for the send data Link area = words × 2]

Tpci = 1.0 ms + 0.04 ms × Bpci

1-3. Time for Data Transfer Processing at Each Station

The time needed for Data Transfer Processing at a station is calculated using the following
equations :

● When the Data Transfer Function is not performed

Tdti = 0 ms

● When the Data Transfer Function is performed at station i (UNIT NO.i)

Tdti = 1.0 ms + 0.04 ms × Bdti + Tadi

Where :
Bdti = Number of bytes needed for Data Transfer instruction.
One instruction consists of one command and one response message.
The number of bytes for each message is calculated as :
·SEND Command Message : 6 bytes + (Number of data sent) × 2
·SEND Response Message : 3 bytes
·RECV Command Message : 7 bytes
·RECV Response Message : 3 bytes + (Number of data received) × 2
Tadi = Time additionally needed for the Data Transfer operation when the station is in
PLC Link Mode.
·When the station is not in PLC Link Mode
Tadi = 0 ms
·When the station is in PLC Link Mode
Tadi = 1.0 ms

CPU scan operation CPU scan operation

·In the above example, the operation flow from an input transition to an output
transition is explained as follows :

The operations of station number 01 : The operations of station number 02 :

Input transition : Buffer update signal :

The external input relay R0.0 in the station To confirm the buffer availability, the buffer
number 01 is turned ON. update signal is transmitted during the Link
buffer update time.

I/O Update :
At the time of I/O update in the CPU scan[station

Appendix2 Communication Times

Token reception :
When the first token is passed after the reception of the buffer update signal, the send area data in
the buffer is prepared for transfer.

Data distribution :
The data are actually distributed during one transmission cycle time plus the transmission time
needed for next station after the buffer update signal only when the buffer is ready to receive the
data.

PLC Link buffer update :

The data in the buffer at station number 02
(UNIT NO. 02) is transferred to the CPU
memory.

Program execution :
The Link relay L0.0 turns ON and R2.0
turns ON.

I/O Update :
At the time of I/O update in the CPU scan
[station number 02 (UNIT NO. 02)], the
R2.0status is updated.

Output transition :
The external output relay R2.0 in the station
number 02 (UNIT NO. 02) is turned ON.

Since the actual PLC Link Response Time depends upon the transmission cycle time, the
transmission timing and the time needed for CPU processing(CPU scan time) etc., the PLC Link
Response Time will deviate between the minimum and the maximum possible PLC Link Response
Times. When installing the network, these values should be taken into consideration.

1-4-1. Minimum PLC Link Response Time ″Minimum Rpc″

The minimum amount of time needed between an input transition from a PLC
and the corresponding output transition to the next PLC is calculated as follows :

Minimum Rpc = TidA + TscA + TstA + Tsti min. + TscB + TodB

where :
TidA = Input delay time of the input transition at PLC ″A″.
TscA = Scan time of PLC ″A″.
TstA = Time needed for the PLC Link processing by ″A″.
Tsti min. = Time needed for the PLC Link processing by station ″i
(UNIT NO.i)″. Here, the Tsti min. is supposed to be the shortest
time needed for processing by one station.
TscB = Scan time of PLC ″B″.
TodB = Output delay time for the output transition of PLC ″B″.

TscB = Scan time of Programmable Controller ″B″.
T2 = Time needed from the buffer update signal reception and the CPU
memory update at station ″B″.

T1 = (1 + ) × TscB
TscB
Tsti max. = Time needed for PLC Link Processing by station ″i (UNIT NO. i)
