Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney was born in 1942 in Liverpool, England. He always loved music and when he was 15, he
joined John Lennon’s band, the Quarrymen. Paul and John became good friends and started writing songs
together. Another friend of Paul’s, George Harrison, joined the band and they changed its name to the
Beatles.
In 1961, they performed at a club in Liverpool, and then went on a tour to Germany. When they returned to
England, a drummer called Ringo Starr joined them. One year later, they released their first single and it
reached number 17 in the British charts. The next few years were a phenomenon; the press named the
adulation for the group “Beatlemania”. In 1964, the Beatles toured America and made their first film,
A Hard Day’s Night. A year later, the Queen awarded the Beatles the MBE – Member of the Order of the
British Empire. This was a great honour.
Two of the Beatles got married in 1969. Paul married an American, Linda Eastman, and John married Yoko
Ono. Things were changing, and in 1970, after their last film, Let It Be, the band broke up. Although the
players went their own way, their music continued to be very popular.
Paul and his wife started a new band called Wings and they went on successful tours to Europe, Australia
and America. In 1979, the Guinness Book of Records gave Paul a special award for selling 100,000,000
singles and receiving 60 gold discs. Paul McCartney is the most successful composer of popular music in
history, and also one of the wealthiest.
In 1980, tragedy struck when John Lennon was murdered in New York City. Although the Beatles were no
longer together, each of them, as well as people around the world, mourned John’s death.
At about this time Wings broke up, but Paul continued with a variety of projects. He released solo albums,
sang with other famous singers and was the first artist from the West to release an album exclusively in the
former Soviet Union. In 1991, Paul, together with conductor Carl Davis, composed a classical piece, the
Liverpool Oratorio. Paul composed another piece, Standing Stone, in 1997.
Paul gives a great deal of his money to charities. He built the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, a
school which helps and encourages young artists, in his home town.
Note: Paul and Linda were inseparable, devoted to each other and their four children. In 1995, Linda
developed cancer. Shortly after the publication of this reader, in 1998, and after a brave struggle, she died.
Her tragic death was a loss to so many. Beatles’ producer, Sir George Martin said, “Paul has to bear the
grief not only for losing his love, but also the best friend he ever had.”
Tina Turner
When Tina Turner was born in 1939, in Tennessee, America, she was called Anna Mae Bullock. Later her
name was changed to Tina Turner. Her childhood was unhappy. When she was 10, her mother left home.
Tina and her sister remained with their father, but he soon remarried and left the girls when he moved with
his new wife to another town. At 13, Tina was without a mother or a father, but she had her sister, Alline.
Tina had a good voice and loved to sing. When she was 16, she and Alline moved to St Louis to be with
their mother again. One evening, Tina and her sister went to the Club Manhattan to hear a band called the
Kings of Rhythm. The leader of the band was Ike Turner.
Ike often invited people to sing with the band. Tina took her chance, and when she finished, Ike asked her
to be one of his regular singers. Ike was 26 and married with two sons, but he liked having other women
around him. He also liked Tina and bought her clothes and presents. Together Ike and Tina made a lot of
money from records, concerts and television appearances.
Ike left his wife and in 1961, married Tina. However, from the start, it was an unhappy marriage. Ike was a
violent and cruel man and beat Tina for no reason. She often had to cover her bruises and cuts with make-
up before going on stage.

In 1965, a record producer called Phil Spector heard Tina sing and wanted to make a record with her on her
own. Although her career was successful, her life with Ike was terrible. One night she even tried to kill
herself. At last, in 1976, after a violent argument, Tina left her husband and began to rebuild her life.
She met a manager called Roger Davies, who liked her voice. He arranged tours for her in South Africa,
Australia and the Far East. They were successful and Tina eventually became a great singer on her own.
She has been in films and has written her autobiography. She’s now a millionaire, with homes in
Switzerland and France. The girl who survived a broken home and an unhappy marriage has become an
international star.
Bill Gates
Bill Gates is probably the richest man in the world. He owns Microsoft Corporation, the biggest provider of
software for personal computers. Bill Gates was born in Seattle, America, in 1955. He was a shy boy who
loved reading books. From an early age, Bill was interested in computers. When he was 13, he and his
friend Paul Allen wrote their first computer program.
When Bill was 16, he, Paul and another friend called Kent Evans formed the Lakeside Programmers Group.
Sadly Kent Evans died in an accident, but Bill and Paul continued their work together. In 1973, Bill went to
Harvard University to study mathematics and economics.
Bill was 19 and still at university when he and Paul founded Microsoft. Their first project, BASIC, was a
computer language for the first personal computers. It was a great success. Two years later, Bill left
Harvard to concentrate on his career. Microsoft grew so quickly that in 1979, they opened bigger offices in
Seattle. Bill and Paul developed an operating system, sold it to IBM but kept the licensing rights. This
helped them to become millionaires. By 1990, Microsoft had sales of more than $1 billion a year.
In 1994, Bill married Melinda French and two years later, their daughter Jennifer Katharine was born. They
live in a luxurious home that cost about $40 million to build. With two other colleagues, Bill wrote a book
called The Road Ahead about the future of information technology. The book was a best seller and Bill
donated all the profits to charity for educational programs in schools.
Bill is a hard worker, spends a lot of time with his staff, and has a friendly relationship with his workers.
He is always looking ahead for new ideas or new developments, and is one of the most outstanding men of
our time.

medicine, politics and other areas.

courage.

artists, including Tina Turner and Paul McCartney. One and a half billion people all over the world

million for charity.
• Two of the computer programs that Bill Gates has produced are the applications program WORD 1 and
the operating system Windows. These systems and their updated versions are used in computers all over
the world.
• In 1998, Microsoft was involved in litigation with the US Government. The government claimed that
Microsoft had been engaging in anti-competitive business practices in order to gain dominance of the
