Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter discuss the research design, locale of the

studies, research respondents, research instruments, the data
to be gathered, data gathering procedures, and as well as data
analysis procedures.

Research Design

This is a correlational research, the purpose of conducting

the study is to evaluate the relationship between student’s class
attendances with their respective academic performance. The
independent variable of this study was the class attendance
(monitoring for absenteecism) and the dependent variable was
the student’s academic average. As stated according to this
method, class attendance will gauge the student’s average
learning.

Locale of the Study

The locale of the study was Palompon National High

School(PNHS). It is located in Brgy. Central III, Palompon,

Leyte, Philippines.
Research Respondents

The participants were the Grade 12-Stem, the ages are 17

to 19 live within the Municpality of Palompon. There are

approximately 24 males and 28 females.

Research Instruments

The instruments used in this research are grade sheet of

the Grade 9-A students and questionnaires. The grade sheet

was used to gather the 1st grading grades of the samples,

which was used to gather data about the student’s deprivation

of own class attendance guided by their adviser’s class record.

The questionnaire was in the form shown below:

Survey Questionnaire

Name; (optional)

Date;

I. Directions: Please answer the following questions according

to your own experience of class attendance and 1 st grading

average monitoring.

1. Did you attend your class on its first phase/grading regularly?

2. If present during class discussions, can you understand all

the lessons? Is it difficult to catch up? Please answer yes or no

only

The questionnaire yields to recognize student’s

absenteecism effects to the learner ability to comprehend along

within their respective class. Absenteecism will only be

recognized if the student commit 3 consecutive absences in a

week to 10 days within the good 23 school days which serve as

the time basis of their first grading. This data was necessary in

computing the correlation coefficient.

Data to be Gathered

The data be gathered is a ratio data. Average academic

performance in terms of first grading grades of the students will

be associated with their regular class attendance. The two

parameters of this study are; class attendance (I), this refers to

the student’s class attendance for the whole durations of first

grading which only records the number of absences within

specified yet limited time span. This parameter will try to

analyzed and recognized absenteecism in accordance of this

study and will use days to measure it Average academic

performance (2), this refers to the grades achieved by the

samples.
Data Gathering Procedures

A survey was conducted using questionnaires to record each

of the samples class experience of attending regular discussions

and their lectures comprehension’s index. The sample refers to

the whole population of Grade 12-Stems students. After the

first set of gathered from the grade sheet of class adviser of

Grade 12-Stems students and will be followed by the number of

absences count through their first grading set of class

attendance, respectively.

Data Analysis

The data was analysis through testing the correlation

between absenteecism and the academic performance of the

student using Pearson’s R Correlation Coefficient. The results

was used to conclude if the relationship was very high, high,

and low or there is no correlation at all. The Pearson’s R

Correlation was defined as:

8
r= (( ∑ xy ) −¿)
√ {n ¿

The data used in this formula was summarized from the

table showing data reflected below:

Student X Y xy x² y²

Σ x =¿ Σ y=¿ Σ x =¿ Σ x 2= Σy 2=

The formula was formulated by statistician Karl Pearson. The

formula was cited from the sixth edition of the book Elementary

Statistics (Allan G. Bluman,2010).

Moreover, regression is used to show the contribution of the

number of absences to the academic performance of Grade 12-Stem

students of Palompon National High School (PNHS). The linear

regressions was defined as shown below;

R2= {(I/N)* Σ(xi-meanX)*(yi-meanY)]/(Sdx*Sdy)}2

Where:

N= number of samples
(xi-sumX)= value of x minus the mean of x

(yi-sumY)= value of y minus the mean of y

Sdx= standard deviation of x

Sdy= standard deviation of y
