System Unit - Is the enclosure that contains the main components of a computer

Chassis/Case – Made of Aluminum or plastic, computer case

Parts of System Unit – Mother Board, Power supply, Back panel, front panel, chassis/case, Harddisk
drive, Hard disk led, powerbutton, Power led/pled, floppy disk drive, cd drive

Mother Board - The main board, a large circuit board where everything else plugs (ports) into.

Power supply - primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to
another.

Back Panel - The portion of the motherboard that allows you to connect external devices such as your
monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse.

front panel connector - is where all the elements present on the front of your case are connected.

Harddisk drive - is the main, and usually largest, data storage hardware device in a computer. keeps a
hold of its data even when powered off.

Solid-state drive - SSDs use flash-based memory, which is much faster than a traditional mechanical hard
disk.

Power button - a round or square button that powers an electronic device ON and OFF.

Power led/pled - connection on the system panel header that lights the power led indicators on your
motherboard or front of your case.

Floppy disk drive - a piece of computer hardware that reads data from, and writes data to, a small disk.

CD drive - a device that lets you access a compact disc from a computer

CD-ROM is a pre-pressed optical compact disc that contains data. Read only memory

CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable) is a digital optical disc storage format. Can be Edited and read

Ram, Rom, CMOS battery, Cpu socket, central processing unit, North bridge, South bridge, PCI EXPRESS,
PCI, FDD HEADER, 24 PIN CONNECTOR, 4 PIN CONNECTOR, FRONT PANEL CONNECTORS, BACK PANEL
CONNECTORS, Speaker connector, memory slot, SATA connector, IDE Connector, CAPACITOR, COIL, Fan

Basic Input/output system - contains the basic information about the hardware & settings of your
computer. used during the start up routine (boot process) to check out the system and prepare to run
the hardware.

RAM (Random Access memory) - memory is used inside the computer to hold programs & data while it
is running. volatile type of memory.

ROM (Read only MEMORY) - stores the content even if the system is not in use to store the information
permanently. Non-volatile type of memory
CMOS battery (Complimentary metal oxide semi Conductor) - used to store basic Information about the
pc’s configuration.

CPU socket/Processor Socket – A connection that allows the computer processor to be connected to
motherboard.

CPU (Central Processing unit) - Also known as microprocessor or processor. Called the Computer’s Brain
responsible for fetching, decoding and executing program instructions as well as performing
mathematical and logical calculations

NorthBridge - Oversees controlling transfers between the processor and the ram. Called Memory
Controller

SouthBridge – an IC on the motherboard responsible for the hard drive controller, I/O controller and
integrated hardware. Called Input/Output Controller

PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) -

PCI express - standard type of connection for internal devices in a computer. It replaced AGP
(accelerated graphics port)
