Answer all questions in the spaces provided.
In questions where a numerical answer is required, an exact value is required, unless otherwise specified.
In questions where more than one mark is available, appropriate working must be shown.
Unless otherwise indicated, the diagrams in this book are not drawn to scale.

Question 1 (9 marks)
An open box is made from a sheet of cardboard with dimensions 20cm by 25cm by cutting out four
squares of side length 𝑥 from the corner, as shown in the diagram below. All units are given in cm
𝑥
𝑥
a. State the equation and maximal domain of 𝑉(𝑥), which gives the volume of the box.
2 marks
b. The customer requires the volume of the box to be at least 700cm3. Find the values of 𝑥, correct
to the nearest mm, that will satisfy her requirements.
2 marks
c. In order to reduce the cost of production, the area of cardboard (i.e. the surface area) must also
be considered.
i. Express 𝐴(𝑥), the area of cardboard used in cm2, using functions notation
2 marks
ii. Find the values of 𝑥, correct to 2 decimal places, such that the volume of the box in cm3 is
less than the surface area of the box in cm2

Question 2 (9 marks)
The path a surveillance drone, in km relative to a control tower at (0, 0), is given by the function
"
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎(𝑥 − 𝑏)# + 𝑐, where 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 are constants used to control the path of the drone
a. The drone starts takes off at (−1, 3) (i.e. endpoint of the function) and passes a landmark which
is 5km due north of the control tower.
2 marks
b. Hence, state the implied domain and range of 𝑓(𝑥)
2 marks
c. An identical drone has its flight path given by 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑓 !# (𝑥)
i. Find the equation of the function 𝑔(𝑥)
1 mark
ii. The two drones collide at the intersection of their paths. Find the coordinates of the
collision site, correct to 2 decimal places
1 mark
d. The engineer, stationed 3km due west of the control tower, immediately travels in a straight line
towards the collision site in order to recover the drones. If his average speed is 20km/h, how
long would it take for him to reach the drones? Give your answer to the nearest minute.
