SECTION 3 – Extended Response Questions

Instructions for Section 3

Answer all questions in the spaces provided.

Question 1 (10 marks)

The mass of a newfound element – Methodsium – is very unstable so it will decay with respect to time.
However, the rate of decay differs depending on the experimental conditions.
In the first experiment, the initial mass of Methodsium is 10kg and has a half-life of 500 hours (i.e.
every 500 hours, half the mass of Methodsium will decay).
- 2∙#
a. The function 𝑀(𝑥) = 𝑝 ∙ G H models the mass of Methodsium in kilograms with respect to
"
time for this experiment

-
Show that 𝑝 = 10 and 𝑞 = /44

2 marks

b. Hence, to the nearest hour, find how long it takes for the Methodsium to decay from 5kg to 1 kg

c. Aiming to investigate the rate of decay under different experimental conditions, the scientists
investigate a 5 kg sample of Methodsium in the second experiment, with its mass modelled by
the function:

-
𝑁(𝑥) = − " log ! (𝑥 + 1) + 5

If they experiment was conducted for 2000 hours, sketch the graphs of 𝑀(𝑥) and 𝑁(𝑥) on
the same set of axes below. Ensure to label the endpoints
3 marks

d. The scientists need to transport 5 kg of Methodsium to a separate laboratory for further
testing. As the journey will take 400 hours, they wish to minimise the amount of Methodsium
lost due to the decay. Which experimental conditions should the scientists use? Support your
answer with mathematical values.

Question 2 (8 marks)
The temperature on Planet 𝛼 varies across a particular year according to the rule:
𝜋 1
𝑇(𝑥) = 𝑇4 sin • i𝑥 + j€ + 10
6 2

Where T is the temperature in degrees Celsius, and 𝑥 is the month, where 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 12.
T0 is a positive constant. Assume that on this planet, one year is twelve months and each month is
thirty days.
a. If the lowest temperature that year is −15 degrees and the maximum temperature is 35 degrees,
find the value of T0

1 mark

b. Hence, find the temperature of the first day (take 𝑥 = 0 for this day), giving your answer to the
nearest degree

1 mark

c. When the temperature is below negative 5 degrees, planet wide heating will be activated. Find
the proportion of the year, correct to 2 decimal places, that heating will be necessary.
