PREPARED FOR CONSULTATION

DIAGLOGUE
MODERATOR
Assalamualaikum and a very good day I wish to all
of you. Welcome to our forum today. First of all, I
would like to thank to Madam and fellow
friends. Our issue for today is “ Does social media
do more harm than good ?”

Before we start, let me introduce to all of you

about our panels for today because most of them
have a lot of knowledge and also experiences about
this topic that we will discuss. Panel 1 Balqis (
Research Student) , Panel 2 Issey (Social Media
Influencer), Panel 3 Kautsar (Counsellor), Panel 4
Suzy (Netizen) and the last panel, panel 5 Risya
(Businesswoman) . Hope all of you are in the pink
of health.

Not further a due, I want to peel it off about our

topic. Social Media is a website and
applications that enable users to create and share
content or to participate in social networking. For
example, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok,
Shopee and Blog. Without wasting time let’s hear
about all kinds of
social media do more harm than good from the
first panellist, Miss Balqis.

PANEL 1: Balqis(Research Student)

Disadvantage: As a social media user, I stand by my judgement
Cyber-bullying that social media does more harm than good.
Why? Because of cyberbullying, I assure you guys
that it is not an uncommon occurrence. I always
see cyberbullying every day on various social
media platforms. But what exactly is cyberbully?
Most people
don’t even know what they posted and

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

commented using their social media accounts are

considered as cyberbullying. According to a
website medically reviewed by Scientific Advisory
Board and written by John Tsilimparis, MFT on
June 17, 2019, cyberbullying is the repeated and
willful use of digital technology to harass, threaten,
embarrass or target another person. Cyberbullies
use cell phones, computers and tablets. They use
email, text messaging, social media, apps, forums
and gaming in their efforts to humiliate their peers
and others. As you can see, that is the difference
between physical bullying and cyberbullying; one
takes place in the real world, another one happens
online. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into
unlawful or criminal behaviour.
Nevertheless, it can be said that cyberbullying
always happens in social media. But why social
media? This is because;

According to the same website, cyberbullying is

easier to commit in social media than traditional acts
of bullying because the perpetrator doesn’t have to
confront the victim in person. It can also be
perpetrated anonymously, so victims often don’t
know who is targeting them. The bully gets to
operate outside the view of adults making it harder
for parents to recognize and address it, if and when
their kids are being victimised. In simpler words, it
is difficult to know whether your child is a victim or
even a bully. For victims themselves, it can feel like
there’s no escape. While the school day typically
ends in mid-afternoon, the
Internet never closes down. That means

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

the online abuse is often unrelenting, continuous,

and may go on for days, weeks or even months.
Cyberbullying has the potential to reach large
audiences and cause more damage to its victims,
especially if it goes viral.

How about the person who is being bullied? Are

they doing fine just because the bullying only
happens online? The answer is NO. While bullying
causes bruises and injuries, cyberbullying causes
psychological damage to the victim. Some of them
are crippling fear, destruction of self-esteem, social
isolation and poor academic performance. It can
also lead to difficulty in forming healthy
relationships in terms of building trust and even
develop phobia towards social media. Most
importantly, victims can develop severe symptoms
of post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. In
some severe cases, it might lead to suicide. Just
imagine, how scary social media can be, a person
outwardly healthy and looking fine suddenly died.
Dangerous isn’t it?

Based on an article written by Jenny Mendez-

Guerreo, University of Maryland College Park
Campus titled ‘Why Do People Cyberbully’
published on November 2, 2020. In the perspective
of the bully themselves, they feel superior and
mighty when performing such acts. They hid behind
their social media account so no one can pinpoint
who they really are. By being anonymous, one can
muster courage to commit such villainous acts
without being worried of being caught. If anything
were to happen, they can

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

always quickly delete their social media

accounts.Another reason is that they are too afraid
to express their dissatisfaction towards a person
directly, thus, they opt to cyberbullying.

Another thing that needs to be taken into

consideration is social media is a vast network
platform where everyone at every age has social
media accounts. Based on statistics provided by
Global Web Index, the average number of social
media accounts a millennial has is 8.4 worldwide.
The growth in the number of accounts per person is
75%, from 4.8 accounts per person in 2014 to
8.4 in 2020. The study of 46 countries with internet
users aged 16 to 64 shows Japan had the lowest
average number of social network accounts at 3.8,
compared to India with 11.5 accounts per person.
For that reason, the possibility of cyber bullying
being exposed to young adults is very high and later
on prompting them to commit the heinous act.

From my perspective, I always think that

cyberbullying is an act of cowardice where the
bully oppresses others secretly. I strongly believe
that all misunderstandings and fights should be
solved properly in peace. Hence, I want to stress on
my initial view about social media. Based on what
I explained before, it can be said that social media
does more harm than good.

MODERATOR
Thank you Miss Balqis. From your perspective, you
think that cyberbullying is an act of cowardice
where the bully oppresses others secretly, right ?
Okay,

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

now let’s move to our famous influencer Panel 2

Miss Issey.

I absolutely agree with what Balqishave explained.

PANEL 2: Issey (Social Aside from cyber bullying, I believe some of you
Media Influencer) Disadvantage: might have or might not have heard about the rise of
Cancel culture & “cancel culture” and the idea of cancelling someone
Social media on social media. This issue has gained mainstream
toxicity attention among the online community including all
of us. So, according to Reddit user
KaidenAlenko1992 on the topic “Cancel Culture
Does Exist”, “cancel culture” is a form of social
ostracism, in other words social rejection where a
person is thrust out of social or professional circles
because of their reported actions either online or in
person. In other words, culturally blocked from
having a remarkable public platform. As claimed by
Reddit user Jackbot92 on the topic “What’s your
opinion on cancel culture?”, from a social media
user perspective, “cancel culture” is seen as a sense
of justice against those people whom they find
offensive.

To give you a clear idea on what “cancel culture” is

all about, let me give you an example of a situation
that has caused fuss all over the internet in the past
2 years. My example of true “cancel culture” is the
youtuber Shane Dawson, who has over 20 millions
of subscribers. You might wonder what impact and
consequences of him being cancelled on the internet
had on his career. So, why was Shane Dawson
cancelled? What did the influencer do?
Despite being one of the most influential

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

Youtuber, he was involved in a series of

controversies and his problematic actions from the
past re-surfaced. So, let me mention some of his
controversial remarks. The online community
pointed out his racist, blackface and paedophilia
jokes that he casually made. Not to forget to
mention, he was also accused of manipulation by
some other influencers. This has resulted in his
career failing and a lot of his own Youtuber circles
cut ties with him.

Within the past year, many cancelled celebrities like

the Harry Potter author
J.K Rowling, the American singer and songwriter
Justin Timberlake and the American television host
Ellen DeGeneres have experienced the lasting
suffering of career setbacks. Based on an online
article website The Post, Athens, by recent
definition, the term to cancel someone, usually a
celebrity or other well-known figure, means to stop
giving them support or boycotting them. Therefore,
when someone gets cancelled, it will not simply
only lie within their own self. But their career,
business and family might get dragged to the
“cancel culture” situation as well. Once you’re
cancelled, it’s extremely hard to revive your career.
We all make mistakes and we all might do things
society finds unacceptable because every individual
has their own opinion. Witnessing the backlash
against the “cancel culture” is enough to put us and
the general online community users into a panic
mode. So, please bear in mind to always be careful of
what you share online on social
media.

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

Apart from “cancel culture”, I would argue that the

toxicity of social media is also harmful and
damaging. As we all know, social media has rapidly
grown over the decade and it shows no signs of
slowing down. It is important to note that social
media, which started as an innocent platform to help
us connect with one another has turned into a
platform designed and programmed to get us
addicted. According to an interview with Simon
Sinek who is known as a famous author and
motivational speaker on Inside Quest with Tom
Bilyeu which officially released on 7th September
2016, he stated that “engagement with social media
from our cell phone releases a chemical called
dopamine. Dopamine is the exact same chemical
that makes people good when they smoke, in other
words it’s highly addictive”.

Nowadays, it’s pretty hard to draw the line between

what’s real and what’s not. As mentioned by the
famous beauty Youtuber Michelle Phan on one of
her video series titled “Pillow Talk”, in this digital
age, it’s very common for us to look on social media
and see images of other beautiful people with the
perfect figure and the perfect life. At this rate, I
believe many of us think to ourselves, “how can we
stop ourselves from comparing ourselves to
others?”. Of course we have those moments when
we feel drained and weak and a lot of thoughts
coming into our head. Why would we feel that way?
Because it’s human nature to compare us with other
people because we are very adaptive

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

and receptive. However, we’ve got to remember that

social media generally is a polished version of our
reality. In addition, in a video titled "Social media is
killing our life" by the YouTuber Ibrahim Kamit, we
need to remember that social media is a convenient
platform where people create a whole new persona
and portray a virtually perfect but fabricated life to
get others to like and validate them. To make this
simple, it simply means that almost the majority of
social media users are not showcasing their true self.

I know many of us tried our best to articulate it but

somehow social media has moulded our mind to
normalising narcissism and superficiality that
results in most of us feeling bad about ourselves and
somehow leads to developing insecurities and low
self-esteem. So, I think these points that I mentioned
makes it even more obvious that social media does
more harm than good.

MODERATOR
Thank you Miss Issey. Yes we must always
be careful of what we
share online on social media and not be toxic to
social media , that was a great point Miss Issey.
Now we pass to Panel 3 Miss Kautsar to talk
about body shaming.

PANEL 3: Kautsar (Counsellor) Thank you Miss Moderators, as we know nowadays

Disadvantage: Body Shaming ,

Body shaming is one of the biggest problems in

today’s generation . It is the practice of making
critical, potentially

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

humiliating comments about a person’s body, size

or weight. It is obvious that all of us come in
different shapes and sizes but society and the media
puts a lot of pressure on us with beauty stereotypes
and standards to deem some as healthy and some
not.

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about

body image and body shaming, especially among
teenagers. Body shaming is an extremely personal
concept and can take a negative toll on a person.

Body Shaming is a crime which can cost RM50k

and or up to 1 Year in Jail. According to Section
233 (1)(b) of the Communications and
Multimedia Act 1998, if found guilty, the
offender can be fined up to RM50,000 or be
imprisoned for no more than a year, or both.”

Now I want tell about the

disadvantages of body shaming.

1. Extensive levels of body shaming can have

negative emotional effects such as embrassment,
sadness, anger, fear, low self worth, low self image.

2. Furthermore, including a reduction in self

esteem and other issues. For example, eating
disorders, anxiety, body image disturbance and
depression

3. Moreover, body shaming causes the victim to

commit suicide.

Article Relate Malaysia, Youth Suicide in Malaysia,

In Collaboration with IDEAS by Chua Sook Ning &
Vaisnavi Mogan they state In May 2019, a young
16-year old Malaysian girl asked her

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

followers on Instagram to help her choose whether

to L (live)/ D (die). When the majority of
respondents on Instagram chose “D”, she ended her
life several hours later.1 For a moment, Malaysians
rallied together in outrage at this tragic event.
Policymakers demanded a holistic public health
approach across various ministries to improve youth
mental health.2 However, the outcry soon died
down and little has been done since. The World
Health Organization (WHO) estimates that suicide
is the leading cause of deaths globally among 15-30
year olds. In Malaysia, Befrienders, the national
crisis hotline estimates that 41% (36% callers; 45%
emails) of people reaching out for help are 30 years
old and below.3 There is an urgent need for
Malaysia to view youth suicide as a social,
economic and public health issue that requires a
long-term, comprehensive strategy.

Thank you, i will pass to our moderator.

MODERATOR
Thank you Miss Kautsar. From the explanation the
victim needs to report to police to stop the body
shaming before it harms the victim. Next, Panel 4
Miss Suzy, what is your opinion?

PANEL 4: Suzy (Netizen)

Advantage: Build relationship and
connection
with others
Well, relationships happen when people meet, when
they interact. And today when the whole world is
hanging out online, what could be a better place to
meet than on the social space?

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

As humans, we have formed relationships with

other people that are either strong or weak. It takes
a lot of time and effort to build strong
relationships. These relationships often include
your family, close friends, and partners. They are
called "strong ties." Weak ties, on the other hand,
have fewer connections and people in these
relationships usually don't know each other very
well and don't see each other very often. There are
many benefits to these weak connections, which
are often made through social media, like having a
wider range of perspectives and a better chance of
coming up with new ideas and collaborations.

A wonderful feature of social media is that it

enables you to connect with both your strong and
weak connections.
Expanding the range of possible connections
enables individuals and organisations to find
specific partiesthat share common interests or
goals, have expertise overcoming similar obstacles,
or have developed tools or procedures for
performing a shared task. Consider all of the
connections you've made online via social media,
and then consider the connections of your
connections: the opportunities for cooperation are
limitless!

If you keep an open mind and tell your story

honestly on social media, it can be a great way to
build and keep up with friends and family. As you
use social media to build your network, keep in
mind that social media relationships are still
relationships. People should be treated the same
way you would treat

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

them in person.

MODERATOR
Thank you Miss Suzy, yes from social media we
can build relationships and connections with
others. Right Miss Risya ? As businesswoman,
we know that social media is the best helpful to
the business. Now we want to hear about your
opinion.
PANEL 5: Risya
(Businesswoman) As a businesswoman, I do believe
Advantage: Serve as social media has its own pros beside
business platform cons. Social media is really helpful for
people who own a business. The
reason is that people can use social
media to interact with their consumers
and learn what others are saying about
their business. According to Wong
Adrian, which officially published on
22nd october 2021, he stated thatsocial
media can also be used for advertising,
promotional freebies, and mobile
applications. Social media may assist a
business recruit clients, gather
feedback from customers, and increase
customer loyalty. Nowadays, social
media has grown from ineffectual sites
to more convenient and practical
websites, such as Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram. Also, based on an
article written by Shujata, In Business
and Management title “Role of Social
Media” stated that social media may
also be utilised to do market research
without having to spend a lot of money.
This will aid in identifying the target
audience and, as a result, in improving
money through improved interactions.
Plus, with the current Covid-19
pandemic, the role of social media to
business platforms have become more

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

important than ever.

I want to add some points. I strongly agree with

Suzy because in business platforms, buyers need to
build a good relationship and connection with their
customers. I mean like, when you have a good
relationship with a buyer, you have more influence
with that buyer. That means the buyer values your
experience and recommendations, is more likely to
value your participation in the decision-making
process, and is more likely to become a "long-term"
customer. And to influence customers using social
media is by working with social media influencers.
A social media influencer is someone who has
access to a large audience and can encourage others
to follow their recommendations.
MODERATOR
Thank you Miss Risya. Wow, best explanation .
Before we start with Miss Suzy and Miss Risya, the
others talk about the disadvantages of social media.
Now do you guys agree with Miss Suzy and Miss
Risya ?

Turning point Disadvantages:

Social Media Scam

PANEL 1: Balqis I agree with both panel’s point of view, however,

I would like to remind everyone that despite
generating income for online businesses, social
media provides opportunity for social media scam
too.

this statement is proven by news provided by

TheStar, written by Lo Tern

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

Chern and RSN Musali, published on 21st April

2021.

PANEL 2: Issey
I absolutely agree with Balqis. What happens in the
online world is a reflection of society as a whole.
Scams have been around for a long time and come
in a variety of forms, and one is through social
media. Social media simply makes the scam work
easier because a scammer can now reach millions
rather than hundreds. To give you an idea, from a
business perspective, Covid-19's transition toward
online shopping has resulted in a dramatic increase
in online purchase scams. Scams on social media are
no longer limited to platforms like Instagram and
Meta; they can also be found on Whatsapp.
Scammers frequently use promotional deals that
appear to be too good to be true.
PANEL 3: Kautsar
Me too, i agree with both of them. Joy buyer was
also happened in business and one of the social
media scam in business life. Joy buyer is an
online selling jargon that means a buyer who
enthusiastically shows interest on an item, but
will not actually buy it. Its always happened to
business online at shopee. It will give the fake
hope to the buyer.

MODERATOR
Thank You Miss Balqis , Issey and Kautsar .

also have the experience like miss balqis,

issey , kautsar said right ?

PANEL 5: Risya
Yes, I have to agree that scam has managed to grow
to be a major problem in today's world. Many people
believe that scam is becoming the new norm in
today's society. And I also have my own experience
in business scam. We were tricked by an email
hacking scam. The scammers appear to have hacked
our supplier's email and informed us of a change in
full bank account information. The scammers sent
us fake invoices with updated bank information, as
well as the previous email trail to and from the
supplier. Everything was a perfect copy of a real
version of the invoices we were used to so we didn't
even notice the difference.
We sent them RM20,000 under the mistaken belief
that it was real, but the actual supplier never
received it. Despite the fact that the supplier's email
address was correct, they stated that they had not
received our response. The scammers appear to have
a strategy of hiding our response from the supplier.
We weren't aware of it until our supplier called to
complain about not receiving payment.
We were upset by the incident. Our employees were
also affected because the scams case forced us to do
a reduction in profits and a reduction in staff
bonuses. And needing to explain what had happened
to the rest of the workforce was a terribly
challenging experience for me.

PANEL 4: Suzy

MODERATOR
After we heard the topic from our panelist today,
we can conclude that social media does more harm
than good. Everyone please not be one of the

FORUM SCRIPT

DIAGLOGUE
MODERATOR
Assalamualaikum and a very good day I wish to all
of you. Welcome to our forum today. First of all, I
would like to thank Madam and fellow friends. Our
issue for today is “ Does social media do more harm
than good ?”

Before we start, let me introduce myself first,

(moderator) and introduce to all of you about our
panels for today because most of them have a lot of
knowledge and also experiences about this topic
that we will discuss. Panel 1 Balqis ( Research
Student) , Panel 2 Issey (Social Media Influencer),
Panel 3 Kautsar (Counsellor), Panel 4 Suzy
(Netizen) and the last panel, panel 5 Risya
(Businesswoman) . Hope all of you are in the pink
of health.

Before we start our discussion, let me explain what

social media is. Social Media is a website and
applications that enable users to create and share
content or to participate in social networking. For
example, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok,
Shopee and Blog. Without wasting time let’s hear
the opinion that social media does more harm than
good from the first panellist, Miss Balqis.

PANEL 1: Balqis(Research Student)

Disadvantage: Cyber-bullying Thank you moderator for giving me a chance to
speak my heart out. As a social media user, I stand
by my judgement that social media does more harm
than good. Why? Because of cyberbullying, I assure
you guys that it is not an uncommon occurrence. I
always see cyberbullying everyday on various
social media platforms. But what exactly is
cyberbully? Most people don’t even know what
they posted and commented using their social media
accounts are considered as cyberbullying.
According to a website medically reviewed by
Scientific Advisory Board and written by John
Tsilimparis, MFT on June 17, 2019, cyberbullying
is the repeated and willful use of digital technology
to harass, threaten, embarrass or target another
person. Cyberbullies use cell phones, computers
and tablets. They use email, text messaging, social
media, apps, forums and gaming in their efforts to

24

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

humiliate their peers and others. As you can see, that

is the difference between physical bullying and
cyberbullying; one takes place in the real world,
another one happens online. Some cyberbullying
crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behaviour.
Nevertheless, it can be said that cyberbullying
always happens in social media. But why social
media? This is because;

According to the same website, cyberbullying is

easier to commit in social media than traditional acts
of bullying because the perpetrator doesn’t have to
confront the victim in person. It can also be
perpetrated anonymously, so victims often don’t
know who is targeting them. The bully gets to
operate outside the view of adults making it harder
for parents to recognize and address it, if and when
their kids are being victimised. In simpler words, it
is difficult to know whether your child is a victim or
even a bully. For victims themselves, it can feel like
there’s no escape. While the school day typically
ends in mid-afternoon, the Internet never closes
down. That means the online abuse is often
unrelenting, continuous, and may go on for days,
weeks or even months. Cyberbullying has the
potential to reach large audiences and cause more
damage to its victims, especially if it goes viral.

How about the person who is being bullied? Are

they doing fine just because the bullying only
happens online? The answer is NO. According to
John, also in the same article, while bullying causes
bruises and injuries, cyberbullying causes
psychological damage to the victim. Some of them
are crippling fear, destruction of self-esteem, social
isolation and poor academic performance. It can
also lead to difficulty in forming healthy
relationships in terms of building trust and even
develop phobia towards social media. Most
importantly, victims can develop severe symptoms
of post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. In
some severe cases, it might lead to suicide. Just
imagine, how scary social media can be, a person
outwardly healthy and looking fine suddenly died.
Dangerous isn’t it?

Based on an article written by Jenny Mendez-

Guerreo, University of Maryland College Park
Campus titled ‘Why Do People Cyberbully’
published on November 2, 2020. In the perspective

25

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

of the bully themselves, they feel superior and

mighty when performing such acts. They hid behind
their social media account so no one can pinpoint
who they really are. By being anonymous, one can
muster courage to commit such villainous acts
without being worried of being caught. If anything
were to happen, they can always quickly delete their
social media accounts.Another reason is that they
are too afraid to express their dissatisfaction
towards a person directly, thus, they opt to
cyberbullying.

Another thing that needs to be taken into

consideration is social media is a vast network
platform where everyone at every age has social
media accounts. Based on statistics provided by
Global Web Index, the average number of social
media accounts a millennial has is 8.4 worldwide.
The growth in the number of accounts per person is
75%, from 4.8 accounts per person in 2014 to 8.4 in
2020. The study of 46 countries with internet users
aged 16 to 64 shows Japan had the lowest average
number of social network accounts at 3.8, compared
to India with 11.5 accounts per person. For that
reason, the possibility of cyber bullying being
exposed to young adults is very high and later on
prompting them to commit the heinous act.

From my own perspective, I always think that

cyberbullying is an act of cowardice where the bully
oppresses others secretly. I strongly believe that all
misunderstandings and fights should be solved
properly in peace. Hence, I want to stress on my
initial view about social media. Based on what I
explained before, it can be said that social media
does more harm than good.

MODERATOR Thank you Miss Balqis. From your perspective, you

think that cyberbullying is an act of cowardice
where the bully oppresses others secretly, right ?
Okay,Miss Issey, as a famous social media
influencer, what is your opinion about this topic
today ?

Cancel Culture

PANEL 2: Issey (Social Media I absolutely agree with what Balqis have explained.
Influencer) Aside from cyber bullying, I believe some of you
Disadvantage: Cancel might have or might not have heard about the rise of
culture & Social media toxicity “cancel culture” and the idea of cancelling someone

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

on social media. This issue has gained mainstream

attention among the online community including all

Despite
being one of the most influential Youtuber, he was
involved in a series of controversies and his
problematic actions from the past re-surfaced. So,
let me mention some of his controversial remarks.
The online community pointed out his racist,
blackface and paedophilia jokes that he casually
made. Not to forget to mention, he was also accused
of manipulation by some other influencers. This has
resulted in his career failing and a lot of his own
Youtuber circles cut ties with him.

Within the past year, many cancelled celebrities like

the Harry Potter author J.K Rowling, the American
singer and songwriter Justin Timberlake and the
American television host Ellen DeGeneres have
experienced the lasting suffering of career setbacks.
Based on an online article website The Post, Athens,
by recent definition, the term to cancel someone,
usually a celebrity or other well-known figure,
means to stop giving them support or boycotting
them. Therefore, when someone gets cancelled, it
will not simply only lie within their own self. But
their career, business and family might get dragged
to the “cancel culture” situation as well. Once
you’re cancelled, it’s extremely hard to revive your

27

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

career. We all make mistakes and we all might do

things society finds unacceptable because every
individual has their own opinion. Witnessing the
backlash against the “cancel culture” is enough to
put us and the general online community users into
a panic mode. So, please bear in mind to always be
careful of what you share online on social media.

Social Media Toxicity

Apart from “cancel culture”, I would argue that the

toxicity of social media is also harmful and
damaging. As we all know, social media has rapidly
grown over the decade and it shows no signs of
slowing down. It is important to note that social
media, which started as an innocent platform to help
us connect with one another has turned into a
platform designed and programmed to get us
addicted. According to an interview with Simon
Sinek who is known as a famous author and
motivational speaker on Inside Quest with Tom
Bilyeu which officially released on 7th September
2016, he stated that “engagement with social media
from our cell phone releases a chemical called
dopamine. Dopamine is the exact same chemical
that makes people good when they smoke, in other
words it’s highly addictive”.

Nowadays, it’s pretty hard to draw the line between

what’s real and what’s not. As mentioned by the
famous beauty Youtuber Michelle Phan on one of
her Youtube playlist episodes titled “Pillow Talk”,
in this digital age, it’s very common for us to look
on social media and see images of other beautiful
people with the perfect figure and the perfect life.
At this rate, I believe many of us think to ourselves,
“how can we stop ourselves from comparing
ourselves to others?”. Of course we have those
moments when we feel drained and weak and a lot
of thoughts coming into our head. Why would we
feel that way? Because it’s human nature to
compare us with other people because we are very
adaptive and receptive. However, we’ve got to
remember that social media generally is a polished
version of our reality. In addition, in a video titled
"Social media is killing our life" by the YouTuber
Ibrahim Kamit, we need to remember that social
media is a convenient platform where people create
a whole new persona and portray a virtually perfect
but fabricated life to get others to like and validate

28

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

them. To make this simple, it simply means that

almost the majority of social media users are not
showcasing their true self.

I know many of us tried our best to articulate it but

somehow social media has moulded our mind to
normalising narcissism and superficiality that
results in most of us feeling bad about ourselves and
somehow leads to developing insecurities and low
self-esteem. So, I think these points that I mentioned
makes it even more obvious that social media does
more harm than good.

MODERATOR
Thank you Miss Issey. Yes we must always be
careful of what we share online on social media and
not be toxic to social media , that was a great point
Miss Issey.
Now we pass to Panel 3 Miss Kautsar to hear her
opinion.

PANEL 3: Kautsar (Counsellor) Thank you Miss Moderators, for inviting me today.
Disadvantage: Body Shaming
As we know, nowadays Body shaming is one of the
biggest problems in today’s generation . Defined by
Cambridge Distionary, the meaning of body
shaming is the practice of making critical,
potentially humiliating comments about a person’s
body, size or weight. It is obvious that all of us come
in different shapes and sizes but society and the
media puts a lot of pressure on us with beauty
stereotypes and standards to deem some as healthy
and some not.

Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about

body image and body shaming, especially among
teenagers. Body shaming is an extremely personal
concept and can take a negative toll on a person.

Body Shaming is a crime which can cost RM50k

and or up to 1 Year in Jail. According to Section
233 (1)(b) of the Communications and
Multimedia Act 1998, if found guilty, the
offender can be fined up to RM50,000 or be
imprisoned for no more than a year, or both.”

The victim can report an offence to the police or

to the Malaysian Communications and
Multimedia Commission (MCMC),

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

Now I want tell about the disadvantages of body

shaming.

1. Extensive levels of body shaming can have

negative emotional effects such as embrassment,
sadness, anger, fear, low self worth, low self image.

2. Furthermore, including a reduction in self-esteem

and other issues. For example, eating disorders,
anxiety, body image disturbance and depression.
According to Article The Clark Chronicle, Body
Shaming A rising problem in Teenage Culture by
Emili Cruz SOsa said Being body shamed can be
extremely harmful to young adults. In extreme
cases, teenagers can end up suffering from eating
disorders. Some teenagers will avoid eating for long
periods of time and when they can’t take it anymore,
they will start to binge eat. Others can end up
developing a harsh case of bulimia

3. Moreover, body shaming causes the victim to

commit suicide.

Article Relate Malaysia, Youth Suicide in Malaysia,

In Collaboration with IDEAS by Chua Sook Ning
& Vaisnavi Mogan they state In May 2019, a young
16-year-old Malaysian girl asked her followers on
Instagram to help her choose whether to L (live)/ D
(die). When the majority of respondents on
Instagram chose “D”, she ended her life several
hours later.1 For a moment, Malaysians rallied
together in outrage at this tragic event.
Policymakers demanded a holistic public health
approach across various ministries to improve youth
mental health.2 However, the outcry soon died
down and little has been done since. The World
Health Organization (WHO) estimates that suicide
is the leading cause of deaths globally among 15–
30-year-olds.

MODERATOR
Thank you, Miss Kautsar. From the explanation the

shaming before it harms the victim. Next, Panel 4

Miss Suzy, what is your opinion? Did you agree that
social media can cause more harm to others?
PANEL 4: Suzy (Netizen)
Advantage: Build relationship and
connection with others Thank you for inviting me to participate in this
forum. In contrast to the negative aspects of social
media that we have heard from earlier panellists,
when we look at the positive aspects of social
media, we find tons of advantages, one of them is
the ability to build relationships and connections
with others.

Well, relationships happen when people meet, when

they interact. And today when the whole world is
hanging out online, what could be a better place to
meet than on the social space?

As humans, we have formed relationships with

other people that are either strong or weak. It takes
a lot of time and effort to build strong relationships.
These relationships often include your family, close
friends, and partners. They are called "strong ties."
Weak ties, on the other hand, have fewer
connections and people in these relationships
usually don't know each other very well and don't
see each other very often. There are many benefits
to these weak connections, which are often made
through social media, like having a wider range of
perspectives and a better chance of coming up with
new ideas and collaborations.

In addition, a wonderful feature of social media is

that it enables you to connect with both your strong
and weak connections. Expanding the range of
possible connections enables individuals and
organisations to find specific parties that share
common interests or goals, have expertise
overcoming similar obstacles, or have developed
tools or procedures for performing a shared task.
Consider all of the connections you've made online
via social media, and then consider the connections
of your connections: the opportunities for
cooperation are limitless!

For example, during COVID-19, the world

discovered that social media is a great way for
individuals and communities to stay connected even

31

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

while physically separated. Since many people are

asked to remain home, they have turned to social
media to maintain their relationships and to access
entertainment to pass their leisure time. Many
people cannot connect with their friends and family
in person, for the time being, social media has
become a main form of communication to maintain
these valuable connections. People from anywhere
can communicate with anyone regardless of the
location and religion through social media. By this
it can strengthen the bonds with your loved ones.
Distance is not a barrier anymore because of social
media. For instance, you can easily communicate
with your friends and relatives overseas.

Lastly, if you keep an open mind and tell your story

honestly on social media, it can be a great way to
build relationships and catch up with friends and
family. As you use social media to build your
network, keep in mind that social media
relationships are still relationships. People should
be treated the same way you would treat them in
person.

MODERATOR
Thank you, Miss Suzy, yes from social media we
can build relationships and connections with others.
Right Miss Risya? As businesswoman, we know
that social media is the best helpful to the business.
Now we want to hear your opinion.

PANEL 5: Risya (Businesswoman)

Advantage: Serve as business As a businesswoman, I do believe social media has
platform its own pros beside cons. Social media is really
helpful for people who own a business. The reason
is that people can use social media to interact with
their consumers and learn what others are saying
about their business. According to Wong Adrian,
which officially published on 22nd October 2021,
he stated that social media can also be used for
advertising, promotional freebies, and mobile
applications. Social media may assist a business
recruit client, gather feedback from customers, and
increase customer loyalty. Nowadays, social media
has grown from ineffectual sites to more convenient
and practical websites, such as Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram. Also, based on an article written by
Shujata, In Business and Management titled “Role
of Social Media” stated that social media may also

32

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

be utilized to do market research without having to

spend a lot of money. This will aid in identifying the
target audience and, as a result, in improving money
through improved interactions. Plus, with the
current Covid-19 pandemic, the role of social media
to business platforms has become more important
than ever.

I want to add some points. I strongly agree with

Suzy because in business platforms, buyers need to
build a good relationship and connection with their
customers. I mean like, when you have a good
relationship with a buyer, you have more influence
with that buyer. That means the buyer values your
experience and recommendations, is more likely to
value your participation in the decision-making
process, and is more likely to become a "long-term"
customer. And to influence customers using social
media is by working with social media influencers.
A social media influencer is someone who has
access to a large audience and can encourage others
to follow their recommendations.

MODERATOR
Thank you, Miss Risya. Wow, best
explanation.Yes, social media can give a positive
effect to others and businesses. Miss Balqis, Miss
Issey & Miss Kautsar do all of you have any
argument on point that has been given by Miss Suzy
& Miss Risya?

Turning point
Disadvantages: Social Media Scam

PANEL 1: Balqis I agree with both panel’s point of view, however, I

would like to remind everyone that despite
generating income for online businesses, social
media provides opportunity for social media scam
too, this statement is proven by news provided by
TheStar, written by Lo Tern Chern and RSN Musali,
published on 21st April 2021.

PANEL 2: Issey
I absolutely agree with Balqis. What happens in the
online world is a reflection of society as a whole.
Scams have been around for a long time and come
in a variety of forms, and one is through social
media. Social media simply makes the scam work

33

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

easier because a scammer can now reach millions

rather than hundreds. To give you an idea, from a
business perspective, Covid-19's transition toward
online shopping has resulted in a dramatic increase
in online purchase scams. Scams on social media
are no longer limited to platforms like Instagram
and Meta; they can also be found on WhatsApp.
Scammers frequently use promotional deals that
appear to be too good to be true.

PANEL 3: Kautsar
I agree with both of them. Joy buyers also happened
in business and one of the social media scams in
business life. Joy buyer is an online selling jargon
that means a buyer who enthusiastically shows
interest in an item, but will not actually buy it. It's
always happening to businesses online at shopee. It
will give false hope to the seller.

MODERATOR
Thank You Miss Balqis, Issey and Kautsar. Yes,
that's true.
Miss Risya, from the time you start your business
till now, we believe that you also have the
experience like miss balqis, issey, kautsar said
right?

PANEL 5: Risya
Yes, I have to agree that scam has managed to grow
to be a major problem in today's world. Many
people believe that scam is becoming the new norm
in today's society. And I also have my own
experience in business scam. We were tricked by an
email hacking scam. The scammers appear to have
hacked our supplier's email and informed us of a
change in full bank account information. The
scammers sent us fake invoices with updated bank
information, as well as the previous email trail to
and from the supplier. Everything was a perfect
copy of a real version of the invoices we were used
to so we didn't even notice the difference.
We sent them RM20,000 under the mistaken belief
that it was real, but the actual supplier never
received it. Despite the fact that the supplier's email
address was correct, they stated that they had not
received our response. The scammers appear to
have a strategy of hiding our response from the
supplier. We weren't aware of it until our supplier
called to complain about not receiving payment.
We were upset by the incident. Our employees were

34

Downloaded by bfxgbhvgcn zbdgfn (lebhere221@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|19273730

also affected because the scams case forced us to do

a reduction in profits and a reduction in staff
bonuses. And needing to explain what had happened
to the rest of the workforce was a terribly
challenging experience for me.

PANEL 4: Suzy
I agreed with what risya mentioned earlier. Scams
on the internet are always evolving and can take on
many forms. When it comes to frauds, scammers
use the same tactics across the board, regardless of
the type of victim they're targeting. Knowing how
scammers operate and common business scams
might help a company avoid falling victim to one of
these schemes.

MODERATOR
After we heard the topic from our panellist today,
we can conclude that social media does more harm
than good. Everyone please do not be one of the
‘keyboard warriors’ and please if you are one of the
victims, please report your situation. Since time is
running, I want to hear the last words from every
one of our panellists, Miss Balqis, give some words.
…… Thank you Miss Balqis, yes miss issey how
about you ? …… Thank you miss issey, Miss
kautsar, as a counsellor, what your advice to the
victim and the bullying? Thank you miss kautsar..
Miss Suzy and Miss Risya ? What about yours ? …
Thank you Miss Suzy and Miss Risya
Last from me, please use the social media as well
as possible. Thank you to Madam and friends
also all the panellist. Thank you for your
attention. Assalamualaikum.
