Twin-shaft mixer TPCD Safety 1-1

1 Safety
1.1 Safety of personnel
• Protective covers, hoods and gates must be installed and closed at all times.
Open or missing safety covers are danger spots for crush and cut injuries.
• Always keep safety devices in good working condition. Never bypass or disable
any safety devices.
• The system must be shut down before any maintenance work may be carried
out on the twin-shaft mixer!
Make sure that all energy sources such as:
– Electricity
– Pneumatics
are switched off and disconnected. The lockable main circuit switch, which inter-
rupts the power at all poles, must be set to “0” and locked.

1.2 Connecting to the electrical mains

• Observe the regulations of the local safety authorities.
• The power supply has to be fuse-protected in accordance with locally applicable
codes and regulations.
• Check that the operating voltage and frequency correspond to the specifications
provided on the identification plate and in the control cabinet.
• All electrical connections to the control systems must be executed according to
the wiring diagram to ensure that the phase conductors are really switched in
the case of single-phase power supplies.

1.3 Safety concept

The twin-shaft mixer is normally part of an installation, and is therefore integrated
into the safety concept of the installation.
If the twin-shaft mixer is not used within this safety concept, the user has to redefine
the risk estimation of the dangers involved and has to take suitable measures.
The CE mark can be attached and the EC declaration of conformity issued after the
commissioning and safety inspection have been completed (see Chap. 5.1, 5-1).

• The mixing trough, the shafts and the mixer blades are made of stainless steel.
The shafts and mixer blades are Teflon-coated.
• The mixing shaft bearing is located on the outside. This arrangement enables
easy access to the shaft seals and prevents bearing grease from entering the
mixing trough.
• The drive takes place by means of flat gear motor on the mixer waves. The
moving in opposite directions mix-wave-exaggerated is lubricated in the oil bath.

Twin-shaft mixer TPCD Description 2-3

• Large mixing trough covers enable the mixer to be cleaned conveniently.

A mechanical / pneumatic interlocking system, which permits opening of the
4 mixing trough covers while the machine is at a standstill, is housed in the cen-
tre console. When unlocked, every mixing trough cover can be lifted individually
and latches into place when fully opened. By pressing on the rubber membrane,
the lock can be lifted up again.
• Solid and liquid ingredients are continuously metered into the mixer. The coun-
ter-rotating mixing shafts mix the product.
• The dwell time in the mixer depends on the throughput rate and the feed angle
of the mixer blades.
For the basic setting of the mixer blades, refer to Chap. 5.3, 5-1.

Twin-shaft mixer TPCD Maintenance 7-3

Caution!
When relubricating, always use the same lubricant for each unit that was used in
the initial filling, since mixing different grades can impair the lubricity.
In case of uncertainty regarding what can be mixed, fully remove the previously
used lubricant as a precaution.
If difficulties arise in procuring our recommended lubricants, you can also use
others with comparable specifications (see Annex).

7.3 Cleaning

Caution!
Only use a plastic scraper to clean the mixing trough. Under no circumstances use
a metal scraper.

Swing up the mixing trough cover to clean. When fully open, the mixing trough cover
locking devices lock automatically.

7.3.1 Cleaning during production

All surfaces of the twin-shaft mixer and of the surrounding area can be cleaned
during production.
We recommend doing so for the following reasons:
• Maintaining constant process control and thus constant product quality.
• Ensuring the safety of the operating personnel with clean walking surfaces.

Note:
We recommend carrying out these tasks once a week.

7.3.2 Cleaning after production

The mixer outer hull neither for cleaning with steam nor high pressure cleaning
equipment is suitable. The product affecting surfaces of the mixture trough is stain-
less manufactured in steel. For the cleaning of the mixer no corrosive cleaning
agents are to be used. This lies in the area of responsibility of the operator.
After if possible all loose product is distant out of the trough
(see to Chap. 6.1, 6-1), the mixture trough internal area is to be released by
means of scrapers as far as possible from still adhering product and removed from
the trough. Afterwards an interior cleaning with damp rag can be made. The mixer
covering is to be cleaned as far as possible drying and be removed only persistent
dirt wet.
