Created by SELebrate YOU

My THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX THURSDAY is a flexible
thinking activity that is so fun and engaging! Your kids will
be begging to do it all the time!!

While thinking outside the box, kids gain so much from this
activity. They strengthen their flexible thinking skills,
imagine possibilities, learn to see and understand
different perspectives, appreciate the work of others, and
celebrate their uniqueness. All of the above foster a
child’s social emotional development.

Look at all the ways you can use this Think Outside the
Box activity with your kids!

• You can do it during Morning Meeting

• You can do it as a bell ringer
• You can do it as a brain break.
• You can incorporate it into your Writer’s Workshop
• You can build off their creations with a language arts
lesson.
• You can use it as a mindfulness activity
• You can send it home and help families support social
emotional learning at home
Directions for Intoducing
Think Outside the Box Thursday
into your classroom for the first time

To support social emotional learning, begin with a read

aloud. I used A Book of Mistakes by Corinna Luyken and
My Day Is Ruined by Bryan Smith
We discuss how the activity is going to help kids
strengthen their flexible thinking skills, in addition to
teaching them to understand different perspectives.
Place or project the activity page on the board. (Have
copies of the shape sheet ready to pass out)
Introduce the day’s shape
Give kids a minute or two to reflect on the shape
Pass out the shape sheets
Let the kids get lost in the activity!
Give them 5-10 minutes to complete
Collect their creations
You decide when and how you want to share everyone’s
work. They love this part just as much as the activity
itself! You can share it whole group, have each child
share, do a gallery walk or put the drawings in a free
write station
